The income tax was introduced prior to Prohibition because the government knew it would lose a lot of revenue once alcohol was banned. In 1912 there were 392k federal gov't employees; 215k were employed by the post office, and that was also funded by the sale of stamps. With the loss of the liquor tax, many states introduced their own state income taxes as well. Prohibition was repealed and the liquor tax resumed, yet income taxes remained. Funny, eh? Chirey is named Chery in markets such as Asia.
And Russia. Fun fact - Chirey means boil (furunculus) in russian
It's named Chery everywhere outside of Mexico.
Every time I watch one of these videos I just think how much I'd love to do this type of car spotting with Doug. There's way too many niche car interests I share with Doug, like the foreign market stuff and license plates lol.
I know I speak for everyone when I say I love these IRL videos with doug and friends. I can watch these forever.
4:14 Small correction. The Dodge Avenger is dead everywhere. Only the Journey and Neon are still sold in Mexico.
The Neon has been dead since 2019, it was a Fiat Tipo with a different front end. The Attitude was relaunched, it is a Gac Empow with other logos.
@ The Neon died in 2021 in the Mexican market. Fun fact: FCA had considered selling this generation of Neon in the US after the Dart ended production.
4:56 my mom has one. Omoda is the High end version of Chirey, a Chinese brand that has been growing up a lot in Mexico
@@jorgealan997 Speaking of Chery, they have an electric car division called iCar.
Meanwhile the Jeep Avenger recently won European car of the year (although I haven't seen many on the roads).
That GMC short bed would be sweet to have here in the USA, at the end of the day it is an American Truck that America doesn't sale.
And we're back with Doug Clarkson, Kennan May, & Filipo Hammond....
New small pickups are in Argentina & Chile & Brazil
This is the best car spotting video you guys have done.
This is my favorite Carspotting video so far. I love seeing all the weird Mexican market stuff
Take me with you!!! Mexican here... i can give you play-by-play of each car! Example... Renault KWID: cheapest new car available in Mexico (2024) etc... the first Jetta you saw is not a Jetta its a Virtus... Smaller than the Jetta but quite similar.. why would you pay more for a Jetta then? and so on. Chevy AVEO is just a rebadged Chinese car.. etc This was fun whatching!
Doug’s the type of guy to grow out his handlebar mustache because it will help him blend in
1:36 that was Mitsubishi Xpander Cross, an small MPV with SUV-ish styling, it has 1.5 L with around 120hp with 7 seaters. These car are so popular in southeast asia market. Usually Xpander produce at Mitshubishi Factory in Indonesia then got exported to different countries.
Xpander has 105 hp same as the Veloz, the Stargazer has 115 hp
The manual is a pain in the ass to drive ngl.
The Kangoo is indeed not the European Kangoo, it is a Dacia Dokker rebadged as a Renault Kangoo
Knowing all these random foreign market cars by name is the most Doug thing ever
3:15 was actually a Mitsubishi Triton
I see some Mexican market cars here in NC sometimes, I've seen a Nissan March and the hilariously named van, the Chevrolet Tornado
I saw a Nissan March in Virginia a month or two ago. And a current generation Yaris with Quebec plates.
We need more of this. A repeat in a couple months maybe. Really entertaining!
8:41 very much so, GM manufactured the regular cab, short beds with the new modern interiors, 5.3L V8s paired with their 10L80s
Surprised to see how similar those Mexican market cars are to here in Britain
In both countries 40MPG is more important than drag strip times. Ever noticed how Doug rarely talks about fuel economy in his reviews.
@MrDuncl 🤷♂️ I rarely talk about MPG on my reviews too
I am from Mexico and I would watch videos of you reviewing cars from Mexico
Thanks for making this! I was in Phoenix last January and enjoyed seeing all the Mexican cars I’ve never seen or heard of before. In july, I was driving i-91 in my home state of Connecticut and I saw a Volkswagon Classico on Tlaxala plates, it was the most insane thing i’ve ever seen here in Connecticut!
This video is peak Doug for sure I was just waiting to see him spot a Rover 75 which were briefly sold in Mexico, that’s a review that definitely needs to happen lol 😀
11:55 Fun fact: Both the Peugeot 301 and VW Vento were available with diesel engines in Mexico.
another fun fact, we got the 301 and Citreon C-Elysee (same cars, both made in Spain)
Almost every car that you guys saw is a daily spot in India😂😂
i remember i was in port aransas, texas, and i saw a cupra
I think I will never encounter anyone who gets excited to see a Renault Kangoo
You have to cross into Mexico to spot the semi trucks from all over the world origin. Regular American trucks and cabovers from Europe and asia.
I'm in LA county and there's a guy in my area that has a Peugeut Landtrek with California plates. No idea how he got it registered here, but I'd love to see Doug's reaction if he ever saw it 😂
That's a Chinese pick-up truck with a Peugeot badge...
@@jarrodxc70 A Chinese truck pretending it's a French one, and it failed miserably in Mexico. Now it's back, rebranded as the RAM 1200, and its selling better
I love the Chery Tiggo 8 pro max it's like a dream car for me because it's very affordable for what it offers here in SA... can't wait to buy one in the future
Bro, in Russia they have INSANELY bad reputation for their DCT. It literally can fail within 5-10k km. Also the electric systems commonly break during winters
@dankmemes8569 wow luckily South African winters don't get too cold... haven't heard anything bad about them here in South africa
It’s always neat seeing a Toyota hi-ace and Suzuki jimny in San Diego that you know just came from Mexico.
I need 4 more hours of THISSSS!
This was a fun episode! Well done!
We got bearded Doug before gta 6
The last one was Cupra Leon. Formentor is basically the same car but crossover.
@@czechian It’s not the same car. I don’t think it’s even the same platform, or version of it. The formentor is the first car completely design in CUPRA, while the Leon is based on the Seat car.
@@frankone97 Don't fall for marketing bs. It is 90% the same car. Cupra IS Seat, just rebranded to gain some appeal as Seat's sales plummet. Both cars are made in the same plant in Barcelona. Also both of the cars share most components with other VW Group cars from other brands like VW Golf, Audi A3 and Skoda Octavia.
@@frankone97you are kidding right? Not only built on the same platform but actually share 95% of components.
@@czechian The Formentor is a great looking car and available with the Golf GTE powertrain. Unfortunately it also has the Golf 8 controls which Doug criticised so much. Otherwise I would have been tempted to get one.
@@czechian Several SEAT models are being made in Puebla, Mexico now. Along with some AUDI models. The VW plant is not only VW anymore.
I can watch these guys car spotting for hours 😂
Suzuki S-cross ~2018 model year. 12:27
11:13 I saw one of those here in western Pennsylvania of all places! Was behind them turning into a gas station, and I could not help but look as I drove past as I had never seen that style of van in person before, whether it be a Nissan Elgrand or Toyota HiAce. Looked like 5-6 Mexican guys on a road trip of sorts, and a few smiled and waved at me. They knew what was up! Made my day and it's all I think of every time seeing Mexican market cars is brought up on the channel.
I live in mexico city and my daily driver is a white Toyota hiace, same 2.7 2trfe as the tacoma with a 5 speed manual, I use it to deliver amazon packages on my free days.
I see them quite often in the U.K. despite them never being sold new here. There is no 25 year rule here and at ten years old or so they are worth significantly more here than in Japan.
Traveling in Florida I saw a Mexican plated VW van appearing to be the competitor to the Mercedes Sprinter.
Saw a few Hiaces and an early 90s Pontiac Sunbird sedan with Chevrolet badges🤨
@@FrankTimms-cs5hl VW Crafter, At one point built in the same Mercedes factory. A vehicle that I was surprised to see was a Mercedes X Class. A Mercedes pickup based on a VW Amarok.
Doug mentioned if there’s any motorcycles in Mexico they don’t know about; I’d say it’s any Italika bike. I lived in Mexico when I was a kid, came to the US shortly after and I’ve been here ever since, but I still go pretty often and always see Italika motorcycles everywhere in central and southern Mexico. They’re relatively affordable, super easy to work on and just a blast to drive. I’ve driven their 125cc and 250cc models and they’ve both been an absolute blast to drive.
17:40 Cupra (Seat) Leon. Basically a Golf GTi (240 FWD) or Golf R (300 AWD) underneath.
No. It's a Skoda VRS in disguise 🙂
@MrDuncl Skoda VRS is Passat with GTi Engine.
I'd rock that Ram 700 'till the wheels fell off...or until the fatal fender bender.
They are cool, you see them mainly as work or company cars in México very rarely as a private owned car but I'd love to have one
Fiat PULSE, not great panda 🤣
The small pickups would sell really well in the US. Just look how the Maverick did
Love these carspotting videos 😀👍
I never understood why the US Versions of German or European Cars in General have Orange Reflectors, it just makes the Car look uglier and since we have less Crashes per Capita as the USA, i doubt they work as the USA think they work
Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
Because the NHTSA decided to make it a requirement in 1968 and it's very hard to get rid of a law once it's in place. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 requires "passenger cars manufactured on or after January 1, 1970, to be equipped with a total of 4 side marker lamps and 4 side marker reflectors, one marker and one reflector, amber in color, on each side of the vehicle "as far forward as practicable", and one marker and one reflector, red in color, on each side of the vehicle, "as far to the rear as practicable" Between January 1, 1969 and January 1, 1970 the option of reflectors or markers, or a combination of the two, was permitted."
@@VadGTI _'it's very hard to get rid of a law once it's in place.'_
Bingo.
Until 1913 the federal government was funded by the liquor tax and import tariffs chiefly.
Funny, eh?
Prohibition was a ruse to introduce the income tax.
13:28 Doug mentions the Hyundai Staria Van. Are they not sold in the USA?
Here in Germany i see these all the Time, super popular and they look extremely weird but cool
Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
They are not
Haven't seen a single one in Portugal. Even though they are sold here.
Mexico didnt get the Staria. Instead we got a barebones van called the Starex. If you see one run for your life since it's likely filled with debt collectors from Coppel!
Renault Oroch is a Dacia Duster-based pick-up, I believe. We had weird cars in Canada in the '80s - Communist-era Lada, Skoda, Dacia, and ARO 4X4; Innocenti from Italy, as well as the Hyundai Pony and Stellar.
You realise that the styling of the Ioniq 5 is a tribute to the Pony. The South Koreans are very proud of that car as it was the first designed there.
Yes, I know the Ioniq 5 styling was inspired by the original Pony.
Yes, Renault Duster and Oroch in Mexico
I was in Mexico in November and the most interesting thing I saw was this new Lexus van with a gigantic grill. A dealer had a ton of them.
It's actually not a Lexus, but rather a Chinese copy. The original Lexus model isn't sold in Mexico.
Doug in a parking lot with foreign cars is like a kid in a candy store
2:58 dont tou have 1 series hatch in us . Oh nooo 😮
Funny how they badge them as 'Chirey', when the brand that produces the Tiggo series (SUVs) is called Chery.
Chery changed the name in Mexico because back in 2008 a Importer's trademarks the name to to try to sell imported Chery cars, but it failed, so when Chery enter the mexican market, the have to change their name, to Chirey
In the U.K. we are starting to get Omoda and Jaecoo but with no mention of Chery. I wonder if that is too close to Cherry which for years was Nissans best selling car here.
As a South African, most of these cars are just regular traffic. Fun fact, "Chirey" in most other markets is called "Cherry", and the Renault Kwid has 3 wheel nuts and is well known for swaying in the wind while driving, to a very dangerous level.
10:39 Only Doug would suggest that the word "Territory", an English word, is easier prounced by Spanish-Speaking countries than it is in the English speaking United States
The Mitsubishi Xpander Cross is a 3 row crossover for under $30k. You think Americans wouldn't be into that?
Americans aren't into Mitsubishi
firstable, i dont they would if in them tbh
They would probably say they could buy an ten year old 7.3 litre V8 F250 (a real mans truck) for the same money.
11:36 The T-Cross was tested by a german car magazine over a distance of 100.000km and it was the first car to complete the test with no faults. Best result they got in 25 years.
Edit: They take the car completely apart after 100k km and judge the condition of every single part.
I love that here in Mexico, the F-150 is the work truck and the nice trims are called Lobo, same for the Silverado, work truck, nice trims Cheyenne
Indian here.. Many of the cars are familiar and are sold here or used to be sold here..
1. 0:52 Volkswagen virtus, Manufactured locally and sold alongside it's skoda twin 'slavia' .
2. 1:55 Hyundai Grand i10, here it's sold in the name of 'Aura' and i10 here is basically the hatchback version of this car.
3. 2.23 Renault kwid but we only have the Petrol version ( One of the two cheapest/most affordable cars in our market)
4. 2:43 Sold as Nissan 'Micra' here.. used to be one of the cheapest cars. (Discontinued)
5. 4:45 Mighty Hilux, Best pickup sold here although it's quite expensive because of import taxes (CKD Unit).
6. Hyundai creta(pre-facelift), highest selling car in its segment and overall market.. 150k units sold in 2023.
7. Honda city (4th gen) currently selling the 5th gen and one of thr few surviving sedans in the declining sedan market.
4:27 thats a kia k3, not the k4 which is sold in the US
This video is awesome 👏
2:21 over here in central euro the e-kwid gets sold as the dacia spring. a tiny 45/65hp electric "suv" for cities. its also the cheapest electric car you can buy at the moment here in germany starting from 16900€ (17500USD)
That Renault oroch Is Made in colombia exported to México and is not based in a hatchback, it is based in a compact SUV called the Duster
8:45 The single cab short bed trucks in those variants are like a fortune for single cab short bed lovers. Chevrolet still calls them the Cheyenne for higher trims and GMC still calls them the Sierra but they are given the LT & SLE treatment just like the double cab and crew cab in the US. They are only equipped a 5.3 V8 offered in a 2x4 or a 4x4. Best looking Variants in Mexico that u can buy
I’ve heard the short bed regular cab trucks are also popular in Middle Eastern countries?
the ford territory is part of a joint venture between ford and a Chinese company, it has a more "Chinese" interior and the engine is a little 1.5 EcoBoost.
That was a real fun one! Loved it!
4:56 Omoda it's a high end version of Chirey. A Chinese manufacturer that has been growing exponentially in the country
DOUG'S NOSE IS HUGE!!!
I could watch 7 hours of this and still want more
"God I'd love to see a GR Yaris" ...I was saying the same thing until I recently got back from my vacation to Nagoya, Japan. Now I never want to see a another GR Yaris again, lol
A Supermini here in Europe. We also get the Yaris Cross. Annoyingly the U.K. doesn't get the Corolla Cross but we do get the new C-HR which I am seeing increasing numbers of.
