tidfall - circular supremacy
odium - the sad realm of the stars
alghazanth - thy aeons envenomed sanity
kråke - conquering death
and oceans - the dynamic gallery...
old man's child - the pagan prosperity
so many more ❤️
Awesome that you brought up that Covenant album. I feel that most people forget about it
Excellent list! Mine would be:
- Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
- Limbonic Art - In Abhorrence Dementia
- Dismal Euphony - Autumn Leaves
- Cradle of Filth - Dusk... and Her Embrace
- Oxiplegatz - Worlds and Worlds
- Abigor - Nachthymnen (From the Twilight Kingdom)
- Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia
My entry point in the 90s and my three picks also would’ve been:
-Arcturus - Aspera
-Emperor - Anthems
-Cradle - Dusk
The guy in the Dimmu Borgir cover, is Sauron.
Master's Hammer is worth mentioning as they were maybe the first band to play symphonic black metal? Their album "Jilemnicky okultista" came out in 1992 and is awesome IMO. Almost as good as the debut "Ritual", which Fenriz himself described as "the first Norwegian black metal album, although they are from the Czech Republic". Such an important and underrated band, I don't understand why so few people talk about them.
yeah i was thinking the same
I've been listening to metal for over 20 years and never heard of them, so thanks, I'll check them out!
Cradle are so unique (despite being unfairly loathed) that they are the perfect gateway to extreme metal in general.
In the nighside eclipse is one of my all time favourites. Looking forward to checking out some of the others on this list. Great series
Yeah they get a lot of hate but I love almost all their material
i would like to add a couple of masterpieces of this subgenre:
The Kryptik-When the Shadows Rise
Odium-The Sad Realm of the Stars
Ancient "The Cainian Chronicles" is another symphonic black metal gem.
Soulblight from Obtained Enslavement
Anthems from Emperor
I agree with the rest
Anorexia Nervosa - Drudenhaus, New Obscurantis Order, Redemption Process
Abigor - Nachthymnen (...from the Twilight Kingdom), Supreme Immortal Art, Totschläger (A Saintslayer's Songbook)
Odium - The Sad Realm of Stars
Mystic Circle - Infernal Satanic Verses, Mystic Circle
Agathodaimon - Blacken the Angel, Chapter III
Dismal Euphony - Soria Moria Slott, Autumn Leaves - The Rebellion of Tides
...and Oceans - The Dynamic Gallery of Thoughts
Thyrane - Symphonies of Infernality
Astarte - Quod Superius Sicut Inferius
Antestor - The Forsaken
Stormlord - Supreme Art of War
Old Man's Child - The Pagan Prosperity, In Defiance of Existence
Theatres des Vampires - The Vampire Chronicles, Bloody Lunatic Asylum
Darzamat - In the Flames of Black Art, In the Opium of Black Veil
Diabolical Masquerade - Nightwork
Morgul - Parody of the Mass, The Horror Grandeur
Bishop of Hexen - The Nightmarish Compositions
An album that is rather forgotten - "My Guardian Anger" by Lux Occulta (1999), it's interesting because they really did something original there. In my opinion it is as good as those classic scandinavian or greek sympho-black albums.
Such a good album!
Thyrane - Black Harmony
Absolutely fantastic 90s symphonic black from Finland, sounds a lot like In The Nightside Eclipse. Highly recommend it.
Hecate Enthroned - Ths Slaughter of Innocence, A Requiem for the Mighty
Agathodaimon - Blacken the Angel
Seth - Les Blessures de l' Ames
Ancient Ceremony - Under Moonlight we Kiss
...And Oceans - The Dynamic Gallery of Thoughts
Ancient - The Cainian Chronicle
Siebenburgen - Delictum
Great list, Questy! As a personal reccomendation i would add Aeons Of Magick by the Portuguese Black Metal band Sirius, great space themed album with great use of synths and keyboards to create an outer universe atmosphere. One of the first albums one can consider to be "Cosmic" Black Metal so i think you'll like it
Cosmic black? Sign me up
@@Questformetal I'm in need for more Symphonic Cosmic Black Metal. Right now is a field completely dominated by Atmoblack bands
9.Lord Belial - Enter the moonlight gates 8. God Detroned- Lair of the white worm 7. Cradle of Filth - Midan (Why because kickass voice actor Doug Bradley is on the album do haunting incantations as Pinhead of the Hellraiser movies ?) 6. Moonspell-The Butterfly EX 5. Byzantine- And they take up serpents 4. November's Doom- Into night's Requiem Infernal 3. Dimmu Borgnir Cd sampler with 3 songs Including The great Apocalypse 2. Tne Breathing Process- In waking Divitity 1. Witchery- Don't fear the Reaper
I would also recommend Anorexia Nervosa. the most viscous symphonic black band I’ve ever heard
Yeah I almost threw them on too but as to me anyway they sound a lot like cradle I left them off but drudenhaus is amazing
Obtained Enslavement is the peak of black metal imo, Soulblight and Witchcraft are flawless albums and centuries of sorrow is really fun too.
We need a beginners guide to melodic black metal and a blackened thrash episode
Love these beginners guides you can cut straight to the essentials and venture out from there
Still more to come from melodic black to power metal and more 🤘
I always preferred Dimmu Spiritual Black Dimensions album - but most of their stuff is great. Tough choice between Cradles Dusk and her Embrace or Cruelty - both amazing albums love them both equally but if I was at a push it would be Dusk for me - funeral in Carpathia is just amazing lol
Anything by Emperor up to Anthems - post Anthems is a bit meh for me lol. Bloody hell Bal Sagoth that's a name you don't hear much now lol the King's of the long convoluted song titles lol.
Odium who only did one album are pretty good
Limbonic art is my all time favourite.
Mactatus, Adversam, Old man's child, I used to love this genre in 2000
Excellent list, although I would say Hecate are from Wales, not England, as they were formed in my home town of Wrexham, and members are still based here. But apart from that I'm with you with the choice of Hecate album, and the cradle onethe . Newer bands, I would go for the latest by Seth and Stormkeep. Cheers.
i love things with synth and organ
would add Diabolical Masquerade personally but Bal Sagoth, Obtained Enslavement and Limbonic Art are great
ODIUM
Look I'mma say it.... For Dimmu? Enthroned is like Opeth's Orchid or Morningrise, and Puritanical is Dimmu's Blackwater Park. Take that how you will!
Go check Anorexia Nervosa and thank me later🤘
Dibolical Masquerades Nightwork ❤❤❤
Death Cult Armageddon is the greatest Black Metal album of ALL TIME! I do not give a DAMN what ANYBODY says!
Early Catamenia is gold and Opera IX also great.
Isn't new Lorna Shore kinda symphonic black metal?
Symphonic meatal is a very good type of music
If you like music like this you might also like Imperial Circus Dead Decadence as well, with their 2022 full length
Closest thing to the bands listed here would be Bal Sagoth, bordering on power metal at times, and I would say ICDD would be a Japanese Bal Sagoth if they kept the direction they had during their 2011 full length
Vargrav
Vargrav.
I love Cradle of Filth but the production on CRUELTY... is absolute trash. For my money, either MIDIAN or DUSK... are their best albums.
