Fun Fact: Yasuhiro Wada (the Original maker of Harvest moon for SNES) met with Eric Barone (the maker of Stardew Valley) and complimented him on Stardew Valley even. In short he said the newer Harvest moon Titles seemed to lack the "Freedom of Choice/Gameplay" he intended to achieve when he created the original for SNES. Therefor he is happy that his original idea for Harvest Moon kinda lives on with Stardew Valley.
Don't forget Rune Factory! Rune Factory stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Stardew, mostly. They both have different pros and cons, but they're both amazing. I miss Rune Factory.
Even though I LOOVEED Stardew Valley (So don't get me wrong), I didn't find it as entertaining, immersive and "polished" as Harvest Moon (Or now called Story of seasons). Somehow I found Stardew Valleys characters a little bit lacking in comparison to the old Harvest moon games. - As if Stardew valley just missed that little something. Still loved it though. It's a really good game. I might be a bit biased though, because I've been a huge fan of the Harvest Moon franchise for many years. Check out Rune Factory too if you like games like this! :D
same, i frickin love Stardew. It hooked me like crazy past year. However, it's true that it is lacking something..important. I think it is personality above everything. However, some harvest moons are still below Stardew in term of personality (Like ToTT for example, but it is excels in several other aspects like , so i can't really say it is bad). The atmosphere is also lacking. I don't know what to say in this matter. Harvest moon always best other games in term of atmosphere, so can't really blame Stardew here.
Tbh I feel the same way but I know exactly what I think is missing Complete/in depth character arc It seems like no matter how much you talk to them, get them to like you, or how many cut scenes you see with them you only scratch the surface of who the character is. Like I remember with most harvest moon characters, if the game starts to touch on an aspect of the character, the game usually fleshes out the idea and gives you a fullfiling amount of interaction with the character. With stardew valley it really only gives you enough dialogue to want more but he game never really fulfills that desire
Comparing Stardew to Harvest moon Yeah i do aggre Stardew show better stuff than Harvest moon, but yeah i accualy have a lot of problem with it Rune factory however..... i also have a problem with it i accualy prefer it WAY more than Stardew ALSO RUNE FACTORY 4 REMASTER AND 5 HYPE
The reason Harvest Moon games made after "A New Beginning" suck is because it's a different series. After that game, the series changed names in the west to Story of Seasons. Natsume owns the name "Harvest Moon" so when they split from Marvelous, the original series had to change names for copyright and trademark reasons.
Yeah, I really couldn't get into stardew valley that much.... I just didn't like the aesthetics that much. I think SOS trio of towns is far superior, but to each their own.
I thought the game was nice, but as I played it felt lacking and empty, and this coming from a guy first playing in 2019. A noble effort I think but the game kinda drags.
@@Centrioless Is it true that Doraemon has long "visual novel"/custscene stretches? It's utterly beautiful and I want to try it, but I find cutscenes tedious in general. Of course, if the game is witty I might be willing to put up with it. The 3DS Story of Seasons games really suffer from long explanations, but at least they don't try to have a story that breaks up the management sim too much. I personally liked SoS a lot more than Trio of Towns, there was just so much more to do in it.
I do enjoy visiting Trio of Towns, it's especially having the option to take ToT on the go with the 3DS. The only portable option for SDV is the Switch sadly which I don't find myself carrying in my pocket to the grocery store, lol. Story of Seasons had really good character development that I felt enticed me more to play the series. (:
I feel the same way as I put more hours into it SDV characters get pretty bland. I find myself more times than not using the wiki to figure out some of their favorite gifts.
Pretty much this. I think that Stardew Valley is too open for the start for me too. I mean, I'm new to this series of games and genre, Stardew Valley's kinda too open and too hard for a newbie like me. Plus, prefer the graphics of Story of Seasons. I like the 3D models and the art style of the portraits. I'm fine with Pixel art but the pixel art in the Stardew Valley game just doesn't click for me.
This was me at first. The models were okay to get used to just because I played Harvest Moon on SNES, but I got lost from day 1 of my first save of Stardew Valley. All I knew was I needed to get some crops down and get some money ASAP, lol.
That is untrue about Tree of Tranquility btw. You can have a kid and still play. The thing you are trying to talk about was that you can give your kid a special rucksack that is difficult to make, and you can start a NEW save file to play as your kid. Your original save file doesn't disappear unless if you save over it :)
The fun thing about playing as your kid too, is that you get all the money you had in your previous play plus a couple other things too if I remember right. So if you were super rich and successful, you start off in that safe file rich as heck xD
Lindsey Decker Yes, this! I appreciate the correction, I've only played Tree of Tranquility a small amount of time so I must've started the kid save and thought all was lost. :)
Ever since a new beggining, marvelous stopped working with natsume. Natsume is just using the title "Harvest moon" in order to gain money. Story of seasons IS harvest moon. Just without natsume. So in conclusion, Story of Seasons is a continuation of Harvest moon a new beggining. The other games that came out after Harvest moon a new beggining are just horrible and lazy games.
Well then sorry, i guess. I thought he was refering to the whole harvest moon including the old ones which were really good. I thought he didn't knew about them splitting. I'm sorry for looking like a fool. I wasn't trying to show off. I genuinely thought he/she had no idea. I'm sorry again.
I think Stardew is the best, but it’s also important to look at the games for what they had at the time and what was common back then. In the 90s character customization wasn’t a thing, but now it’s standard and a game is lacking without it. I think for the time that the old harvest moon games came out, they are great
@Brute&ButterNot accurate whatsoever. In fact, I compared the credits from Harvest Moon: Animal Parade (the last game series creator Yasuhiro Wada worked on) to Story of Seasons. Only a single person is shared between those two games: executive producer Haruki Nakayama. That's it. People are falling for some bullshit by thinking current-day Marvelous is making any more of "real" Harvest Moon games than Natsume. None of them are the "real" Harvest Moon anymore. It's *all* just teams of developers unaffiliated with the original development team making their own fan games. Y'know, back around 2012, Interplay tried to trick people by "re-opening Black Isle Studios" (the development house responsible for Fallout and Fallout 2). Not only that, two of the original members of the studio decided to make a video presenting themselves as the true revival of a great studio... and guess what? No one fell for it. There were more people from the original development team associated with that 'revival' than there are people working on Story of Seasons that were affiliated with Harvest Moon, and yet people have fallen for this lie that present-day Marvelous are the "real developers" of the series hook, line and sinker.
Story of Season's is beautifully done. Again man you really are hit'in it. That character customization is so crucial to me personally. It really helps you immerse yourself and give a truly unique and personalized game play.
Old Harvest moon games have interesting storyline and characters background Story of season have lot of new features that cant be find in old HM Idk about stardew valley cuz I've never play it
As a huge fan of HM series, with all bias, I do recommend Stardew Valley. I got hooked pretty fast despite a little skepticism with the graphic (which I later find them cute and nostalgic). The game offers endless opportunities and mystery; easy control systems, good plots, nice character development not too mention the ability to modify the game by yourself by using mods available online. As much as I love Stardew Valley tho, nothing takes away my love for the actual Harvest moon (not seeds of memories, skytree village or light of "hope" suckers) and rune factory series
Stardew Valley didn't really add anything to the Harvest Moon formula in my opinion. Except maybe for the more 'grown up ' storylines. Still loved it tho.
My ideal would be somewhere in the middle of Trio of Towns and Stardew Valley. I like SV’s smaller squares for more farm customization, but I like ToT’s more detailed and balanced farming mechanics. I mean, animals in SV are almost entirely pointless, besides Pigs, and there are blatantly superior crops to grow. ToT, you can pretty much go any digestion you want and still become very profitable. Plus, I like how the fartilizer/seed maker cycle works in ToT. I like SV’s more complex characters and themes, but I like ToT’s more in depth exploration of the characters. ToT has a lot of cutscenes and follows up on characters a lot. Buuut, they’re all fairly shallow. It’s just a natural consequence of being aggressively kid friendly. On the other hand, I love SV exploring depression, homelessness, alcoholism, secret affairs. But the cutscenes showing this are fewer and not that engaging. SV has better fishing mechanics, because ToT has no fishing mechanics. Mini g is more engaging, and I like having same sex options. ToT’s polish and presentation is way better, but that might be unfair since SV was a indie passion project. Still, ToT looks and plays so much better, and I prefer the character customization, too. SV might have more options for hair and shirts, but it hardly matters with the simplistic pixel art. If Marvelous could look at SV and incorporate what’s good about that game into their next Story of Seasons, I would be ecstatic.
Arella Jardin a splice of both of those titles would be a must play for me. I agree on the art too, sometimes I wish I could get some SV with 3D customization options.
I love them all, except for any HM game produce by Natsume after the split, horse shit, piles and piles of horse shit. I would probably include Rune Factory in this too, for me it beats stardew valley in many aspects but Stardew is definitely the best when it comes to variety and mystery. THIS is the hard fight. But I love them all, can't pick
@@taco5158 what I don't like is Harvest moon series after HM New Beginning when Marvelous (the developer) split with Natsume (the localizer/publisher). They are made by Natsume themselves, not Marvelous. I actually tried a few, the graphic is very lazy, movement is weird, the gameplay balance around how to make money is also off. I don't want to talk about character design cause it depends on people's taste, I personally dislike them tho. Also, they are expensive ... SoS series is great, I have played all of them except for those that release on Switch only. Some tasks are repetitive but overall, each has its own uniqueness. Off topic, if you like farming game like Stardew Valley, maybe it's worth trying out Sun Haven as well
For me it would be 1. Story of seasons trio of towns 2.havest moon magical melody 3. Stardew valley 4. Harvest moon animal parade 5. Harvest moon sunshine islands
I don’t like how the town is set up in Stardew Valley and the characters and the story is quite shallow which is what really made Story of Seasons/Harvest Moon right up my alley. Although Rune Factory really took the cake for me. So my top 5 would be: 1. Rune Factory 4, 2. SoS Trio of Towns 3. Stardew Valley, 4. HM DS/DS Cute, 5. HM Friends of Mineral Town
I grew up with Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town,Tale of Two Towns, Grand Bazaar etc but Stardew Valley won my heart. So much things to do and the characters are interesting like Shane and how I helped him with his depression, Penny and her sad life with Pam, Alex's story and why he end up living with his grandparents at Stardew, Haley's attitude and how she changed etc. The music is also great and I have more freedom in Stardew Valley because I can do lots of things and decorate my farm(even the town) any way I like.
I have been playing Trio of Towns lately and I really, really miss the first Story of Seasons on 3DS (I lent it to a friend and haven't gotten it back yet). I just found so much about the economy, part-time job system, farm customization, and so on tedious in Trio of Towns. There was more to do in Story of Seasons right off the bat, and competing for the additional farm plots was one of my favorite things in any games. I always had medium and long term goals in SoS, and I loved the replacement of the shipping bin with vendors in town. I think craft/industrial production was also well done in SoS. I grew up on the SNES Harvest Moon, and later got really hooked on Harvest Moon 64. Those are the two most nostalgic ones, though I did have Friends of Mineral Town on GBA it didn't grab me as a kid like it did others. Really looking forward to the remake on Switch. Aside from those, Stardew Valley is great. Doraemon has the best graphics of any farm game I've seen, but everything I've read makes me think I'll die from the long cutscenes.
People who say that Stardew Valley is much more mature than HM/SoS have clearly never played Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. It is by far the most realistic Harvest Moon/SoS game. Your character ages from a young adult to an elderly person, alongside not only your spouse and child, but the rest of the town. And yes, the aging throughout the years does affect gameplay! Your character’s movements get slower, you’re unable to jump, you lose much more stamina. The town growns with you. People move in, move out, the elderly pass away, and the children actually grow up to become adults. The farming in this game is perhaps the most tedious in the franchise, and I guess that’s what you get for realism. You need to water your crops twice a day. Cops will shrivel and die if not watered. This is the only game where breeding livestock is blatant, and it’s one of my favorite aspects, since livestock/animals have always been my favorite part of Harvest Moon. No other HM game can get close to the degree of realism in this game. What I mean by this is that you need to buy male counterpart of your female livestocks. Not only are there cows and hens and miracle potions, but bulls and roosters. And you’ll need them, especially the bull. Just like in real life, cows in-game will only be able to produce milk for a certain of time. Afterward, cows need to be impregnated so they can continue to produce milk once they’ve given birth. On the flipside, they produce up to four milks each day, if properly cared for. No longer will you be able to simply place an egg on the incubator. It needs to be fertlized, and that’s where the rooster comes to play. Sure, A Wonderful Life is infamous for its lack of festivals and an overal story, but I really want to see it be remaked for the Switch or another console. I want them to expand on the town, on the characters, on the events, add more marriage candidates, same-sex options, more than one child, more species of livestocks. Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life.
I enjoy Stardew Valley a lot, but I wouldn't put it in my top 5 favorite games of Harvest Moon/SoS/Rune Factory list. For me it'd be #1, Rune Factory 4, #2, Trio of Towns, #3, Animal Parade, #4, Save the Homeland, and #5, (More) Friends of Mineral Town. And even then I really love Harvest Moon DS (Cute) and Magical Melody, plus the other Rune Factories are all solid titles. If I had to pick my least favorite of the Natsume games outside of the more recent stuff since Lost Valley (as those are indeed dreadful from personal experience), it would fall on the older titles with the very short day structure. I just cannot get into a game that makes me feel that stressed on time. And this is coming from someone who loves Zelda Majora's Mask.
Great review! I Love it when someone will actually commit and make a choice. It is so aggravating when people are unable to make a decision that may be un-popular. Thank You for your honest opinion.
Yeah the games went to shit after the split because they created a brand new game series. Harvest Moon has always been Bokujou Monogatari in Japan. Story of Seasons is STILL Bokujou Monogatari. The Harvest Moon of today isn't the same series they just retain the English naming rights. As for Stardew Valley... I have no desire to play it. It just looks ugly and I'm tired of it being as hyped as it is. Hype really kills things for me.
Harvest Moon Animal Parade >>>> Stardew Valley All Rune Factory Series >>>> Stardew Valley All Story of Seasons Series >>>>> Stardew Valley Harvest Moon DS Grand Bazaar >>>> Stardew Valley Harvest Moon ANB >>>>> Stardew Valley Harvest Moon Tales of Two Towns >>>>> Stardew Valley I Have played all of the game above
Stardew Valley >>>>>>>>>>>> Back to Nature Stardew Valley >>>>>>>>>>>> Story of Seasons Stardew Valley >>>>>>>>>>>> Friends of Mineral Town Innocent Life >>>>>>>>>>>> Stardew Valley The rest i agree with you
it didnt sell into anything. Japanese company makes Game called Bokujō Monogatari , American company translates it for the west and calls it Harvest Moon, japanese and american company have creative differences, japanese company keeps making Bokujō Monogatari games, but since american company owns Harvest moon IP japanese company finds new translation company who then names the translation Story of Seasons, while old american company continues to use Harvest Moon IP and starts making their own games. So lets say BM 11 = Harvest moon 11, but BM 12 = SoS and Harvest moon 12 is now a game made by a company that only did translations before trying to live off a name that they own but didnt actually build.
I liked stardew valley. I played easily over 100+ hours. However to me in the end when I thought about it Stardew valley is lacking a lot of crafting items/machines. A lot of the time I kept asking myself why was I building this or making that. I spent a whole year ignoring villagers because I didn't find most of them interesting (except for linus). In terms of stuff to so, general feel on characters/cut scenes, and how many items are craftable in story of seasons I'd have to say hands down story of seasons is better. Stardew vally is a good game but story of seasons is a great game.
I also ignored the villagers in the first year. They seem boring and repetitive. But when I started to engage them, they had very interesting stories though.
I played 100 hours of stardew valley than sos - pioneers of olive town came out than I got the remake of friends of mineral town and haven’t touched stardew valley since. In fact I went back to my gameboy to play the classic gbc versions.
TheMarcstef I know I stated that in the video, basically saying after Marvelous split Story of Seasons became the superior series and Harvest Moon is now a dumpster fire. I find Stardew Valley to be the best overall title, but Story of Seasons is close behind. I do enjoy the older Harvest Moon titles, though. (:
@@BruteButter i wouldn't say they split, Marvelous made the games but other company translated, so since translation company owns HM IP marvelous had to find a new translation team who named it Story of Seasons. so Bokujō Monogatari (original HM name) 11 = HM 11 , BM 12 = SoS, and HM 12+ = games by team who only did translations before.
Omg! You are pointing out a lot of the same things that I used to love about HM. After the split it became rubbish. I went stright to "Story of Season's" when I found out about it. That character customization in HMNB for 3ds was, freaking SWEET! Loved it! I also really loved TOT and AP for wii. My only complaint about those titles was you character's appearance, the developer's added so much with all those new outfits, why not add a bit more character customization? Also you didn't have to let your child grow up and take over, if you didn't want. Oh and with that, if they went as far as keeping the appearance of your kid and how it would now effect even your new kids appearance, I would have let them grow up and start again. Of course that would have been a ton more work, and maybe could only go through it a second time, but hey I can dream.
I also play Stardew Valley(switch), but I hate how it only saves at night. Also not a fan of the super bright colors and not a fan of the graphics. And I HATE HATE HATE the fishing mechanics in SV for me it is so hard to fish, I am terrible at it and am now in winter first year and hardly fished at all. It is absolutely frustrating for me, I like in HM/SOS you just keep pressing same button to reel in. In SV that stupid bar and time length pressing KILLS me and I can never catch anything! Ugh I give up, someone fish for me! However I am able to look past that as I play and wait for Re:Legend and Story of Season's to come out for switch. Real excited about Re:Legend, would be for SOS as well, if I heard more about it...is it really going to happen?
Something that harvest moon wins over by a landslide, in stardew valley you can't throw rocks into the water! There's a cheat where you can drop it off the menu and get a splash but that's not the same as the satisfaction of making your little guy pick up a rock a yeet it into the water!
I really don’t understand why people think that Stardew Valley is better tthan Harvest Moon. The only HM game that SV can beat is “A Light Of Hope” Harvest moon is way more immersive. The characters are more lovable and cuter. My favorite HM is “A New Beginning” even though SOS is rlly good I still love ANB the most. Neil is also my fave bachelor and he’s in ANB. Anyways I absolutely HATE the pixel style in SV, I definitely like the HM style more. Besides SV got the idea for its game from HM. Harvest Moon also has the nostalgia factor that Stardew Valley doesn’t. There I’ve made my point. Basically I think that Stardew Valley sucks. That’s just my opinion though so don’t hate on me for it.
ANB is the last HM game to be made by original Japanese company. All other HM games after ANB are made by the team that only did translations before and SoS are the games made by the original japanese company but translated by a different company since original translators own the HM IP.
My grandfather always told me not to smoke. He said that it was bad for me and it would give me cancer. I always listened to him and fought the urge to smoke. Since he died of cancer, I knew that i made the right choice and never smoked, since I was so afraid of cancer. Well, I should have smoked those cigs because this video gave me cancer anyway.
*Peeks into the comments.. See's lots of stardew valley dislike..* Huh..... Well.. Guess I will be the one who sings its praise's. I wont lie, I am a "tad" biased, mainly cause i've never played SoS at all. I have played Rune Factory, Harvest Moon titles and even that one no one talks about.. You know.. Innocent Life! And I actually enjoyed that game. But there is one thing that I have noticed that most people don't seem to be talking about.. Free Reign. Yes, it is very open right at the start. It is MEANT to be. The game can literally be taken at your own pace and you can pretty much do whatever you want. It was meant more so to be a leisure game, which any SDV fan will tell you, it is very much a game to just.. Play and enjoy. Plus I personally never wanted to try SoS because of its OVERLY childish look and feel, where SDV feels a bit more realistic, mature yet still fantasy and quirky in its own way. Are you entitled to your opinions? Of course! But, it is a bit of a shame to see so many saying they didn't enjoy it as much as the other titles. It is incredibly HARD to say "Judge it for the game it is meant to be" when it is so heavily similar to HM/SoS even though it does tend to take more mature and a lore filled direction. So for those who said they didn't like it. Try once more. I really feel you may be missing something and if you don't find it and still don't like it.. Well, you still have the other games you enjoy and you know what, thats cool too! Thanks to anyone who read this MESS of a comment of me WHINING about SDV.. But just remember guys.. SDV outsold tons of mainstream games during its release. *Thumbs up.*
Zachary Quinlan Rune Factory is also a pretty mature series. Take Rune Factory 4, for example. There’s a lot of blatant sex talk in some of heart events.
Fore someone who is/was a fan of the gba version of harvest moon which game would you recommend :)? Stv or the 2ds version of Story of seasons? Thanks.
if you can, play both, if you can't then I would recommend Stardew valley, not neccessary mean that I think SV is superior, it just gave me the feel of HM Mineral town better lol. But Trio of Town is great too nonetheless.
Part from 64 I agree . Not because 64 bad but because I've never played it . BTN and FOMT are by far the best , I would personally put A wonderful life up there to but that's just me .
I’ve owned/played all of the Nintendo based HM games (at least all that came to North America) and the Rune Factory and Story of Seasons games. I’m absolutely obsessed and could replay any of them and still thoroughly enjoy them... But I really just can’t get into Stardew Valley. And it frustrates me, especially now that it’s on the switch and we don’t have any other good options for the switch yet so I’d really like to play it. =\ It just feels disingenuous and bland to me compared to HM.
Also I don’t really get how you gave so much credit to SV for character customization. Yeah there are a lot of colors to chose from with the spectrum option but....... you still look like an ambiguous pixelated blob regardless of what you pick. With the SOS customer characterization, changing things could drastically alter the appearance and personality your character gave off.
Yeah if u play HM before stardew, U can't get into SV. I have play Harvest Moon 64, HM FoMT, HM AWL, HM HoLV, HM DS Grand Bazaar, HM ToTT, HM BTN, HM ANB, HM Animal Parade, SoS, SoS Trio, All Rune Factory Series. Theyre all much much better than SV. But i dont know why so many people like SV.... Causes Theyre only try HM BTN and Never Try other HM series?
I totally concur. I'm a die hard bokujo monogatari fan and just can't for the life of me get into SV, and I've tried many a times. All my normie gamer friends love it ... But after masterpieces like FoMt, 64, BtN, aWL (clearly I like the older stuff) I just get bored af with SV. But I'm also glad more people are getting into farming Sims, I hold no ill will towards it.
Animal Parade was my favorite HM game can't believe it didn't make his top 5, I loved both of Story of seasons games and I just started SV on my new Switch and I'm really enjoying it
I would recommend to keep playing the game, i gotta admit the game starts very slow in the beginning but it get more exciting as it go on, and more stuff to unlock
Ugh. The incorrectness. Biggest issue here is that you definitely can keep play after you have a child in Tree of Tranquility. Forever, if you want. Starting a NewGame+ is your own choice.
Stardew is a great game, don't get me wrong, but harvest Moon really felt like a finished game with a beginning, end, and plenty reasons to replay. I even found the whole dying aspect very interesting. If they took stardew's creativity, with HM's polish and detail, you'd have an amazing game. Haven't played a HM game since the ps2 though. They all look kinda trash after that
I don't really like the character design in Stardew Valley at all. In Story of Season it's okay I guess. Not really my favourites. They're rather boring... but better than the ones in Stardew Valley. Yeah, the characters in Stardew Valley are more realistic but I don't know if this has to be a good thing. I mean look at Shane, Sebastian or Haley. Even if you don't know anyone in town normally people are not that rude if you're not making fun of them. The best character design in videogames I've ever experienced was in Rune Factory 4 and Fire Emblem Awakening. I really loved these characters. And normally I play Harvest Moon Games for about 120 hours until they get boring. In Stardew Valley I felt after 64 hours like I discovered almost everything and lost my enthusiasm about this game and my long wished multiplayer feature for this type of game.
At least you could have done your research better! The original Harvest Moon still continues under the name story of seasons! It's basically the same, no reason to put them up against each other
For me its harvest moon friends of mineral town, harvest moon ds, harvest moon back to nature, harvest moon another wonderful life, and harvest moon a new beginning and story of seasons trio of towns. Those are my favorite harvest moon games and the ones I own.
SoS *is* Harvest Moon, unless you're talking about those knock offs by Natsume. I didn't play much hm expect Back to Nature and holv. I really want to play Animal Parade tho
Back to Nature is my favourite Harvest Moon too. Never played 64 but I know they are the same game with a few things changed around. Friends of Mineral Town was also quite fun for me. Stardew Valley is nice, but as I played I felt more empty, none of the achievements felt that fulfilling.
Ik I am WAAAAY late but I'm commenting anyway. As someone who has played five harvest moon games and two story of seasons games, I personally think Stardew valley is better. I just got the game a few weeks ago and I'm addicted. It just feels more complete the harvest moon games I've played.
samantha stiers In recent Story of Seasons games, your character can crossdress, and though it technically doesn’t count as gay marriage, it’s a stretch. The newest successor to Harvest Moon, My Time at Portia has gay marriage!
Gotta be honest, i didn't try Stardew Valley for very long, but it just didn't click. With Harvest moon (well until the franchise was taken over by natsume) and story of seasons i immediately fell in love. So while Stardew valley is probably a great game, for me it's missing the charm of the other two series. Oh and Rune factory, since it was mentioned in the comments I'd another game i felt had that instant charm :)
My first and favorite was also Back to Nature. I think the only ones I've enjoyed quite as much are the first Story of Seasons (haven't tried the newer one yet) and DS Cute wasn't too bad.
@Brute&Butter The creator of HM is not working on SOS. What happened was Natsume was basically the translation and distribution company for the western version of harvest moon. They ran into legal issues and decided to part ways. Natsume OWNS the name “Harvest Moon” so they changed the western name to “Story of Seasons”, a more accurate translation of Bokujo Monogatari. You should’ve clarified it in the video but good nonetheless...
I just wish Stardew had a few more things. Such as picking your birthday to have people give you gifts, or have your wife throw you a party. More.minigames would be nice. Some old school 2D tennis or sports in general. All we really have is a casino and an arcade machine or two. I honestly hate how they took the obnoxious "give your animals attention" thing from Harvest Moon too. It's just annoying and not worth my time.
As you progress a lot of thing will be available to do. The moment I've first felt boredom was in year 4 in my main save file. I've unlocked the cinema, the desert and more. I dont know if you've played a lot but if you havent, then yes i can become boring. Its just fun if you try to unlock many places and stuff. I've played for about 120 hours and almost unlocked everything (on mobile, but pc has even more things to unlock!!!). Sorry for this long paragraph
I say stardew valley is better than old harvest moon from the farming and other gameplay mechanics perspective, but not the social aspect imo. I just think the characters in SV aren’t as fun to interact with. Rune Factory however, is way more fun compared to these 2 games. Fast paced, colorful characters, and an actual fun combat mechanics. In SV, the farming and style is execelent, but outside of it like the combat, dungeons, and fishing aren’t really that fun imo. The combat especially lol, other weapons that is not the sword is useless, and it’s just there to fill the dungeon. But as most people said, the game was developed by a single person, so it’s hard to judge it anyway because it is already impressive as it is.
Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons are the same entity. Same game. Just a different name for legal reasons. Natsume, developer of current games holding the Harvest Moon title, owns the right to the english name of the series.
I like Stardew Valley just to spend some time constructing something, but as of character development I feel that it is pretty lacking; there isn't much incentive to interact with other people and their interactions seem a little soulless to me. If characters visited you to the farm, or their stories were more developed to work around them, then the game would be double better.
I'm sorry, what? He thinks Stardew Valley is top-tier material? Oh boy, am I gonna regret doing this... *Inhales* 1. Poor console porting. (many control and UI elements scream "mouse-oriented game design") 2. Daily Time/Clock sucks. (A case of poor synergy between Minecraft and HM mechanics, as you don't pass out in Minecraft) 3. Combat is weak. (Another problem that sterns from poor synergy. TerraCrafts let you compensate with enviromental control, HM/Rune Factory doesn't) 4. Personal Animals (Cat/Dog + Horse) felt shallow and sometimes even pointless. (That PS2 game, Save the Homeland, had more doggo training than this. SAVE THE FRIGGIN HOMELAND. Let that sink in...) I could go on, but the bottom line is that SV tried to replicate the magic and nostalgia of HM without addressing many of the flaws left unsolved. And no, throwing Minecraft on top of it doesn't do it enough favors to compensate all the issues it caused... But I'm sure people are gonna disagree, so let's hear it...
The 1997 title was made by the same company as who makes story of seasons. Been playing all those since then. Personally, I played stardew valley and think that game is complete and utter garbage. I immediately wanted a refund after 24 hours playing stardew valley. I will not touch a Natsume made harvest moon. To me they will only ever be the publisher/translators of the old titles.
It's a lifesaver in veteran mode! I was able to get a chicken and cow right away, then spent very little time gathering enough money to buy the materials for and buy the large barn and large coop. I was pleased lol.
Veteran mode makes the game harder for no benefit though. Also I feel making items takes too many materials and mining is really bad. Old harvest moon and started valley mining is good.
Awww that's actually pretty wholesome
After sitting down and playing Rune Factory, start to finish, I will agree Rune Factory > Stardew Valley. Love you guys.
I miss Rune Factory T_T
Which one?
@@cacao1312 I played all of them in order, but I really enjoyed 4. :)
Brute&Butter yeah that’s actually the first and only i played it was great I’d love to see it in hd on the switch
@@cacao1312 Same here, a remaster on the switch would be sick!
Don't forget Rune Factory! Rune Factory stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Stardew, mostly. They both have different pros and cons, but they're both amazing.
I miss Rune Factory.
Rune Factory is wonderful game, and I love it too ^-^
The rune factory ones beat up easily the new harvest moon games
Rune factory stands far above Stardew Valley
Rune Factory 3 and 4 the best. Much Much better than stardew or harvest moon
rune factory #1
Tbh I feel the same way but I know exactly what I think is missing
Complete/in depth character arc
It seems like no matter how much you talk to them, get them to like you, or how many cut scenes you see with them you only scratch the surface of who the character is. Like I remember with most harvest moon characters, if the game starts to touch on an aspect of the character, the game usually fleshes out the idea and gives you a fullfiling amount of interaction with the character. With stardew valley it really only gives you enough dialogue to want more but he game never really fulfills that desire
Comparing Stardew to Harvest moon
Yeah i do aggre Stardew show better stuff than Harvest moon, but yeah i accualy have a lot of problem with it
Rune factory however..... i also have a problem with it i accualy prefer it WAY more than Stardew
ALSO RUNE FACTORY 4 REMASTER AND 5 HYPE
I mean it was made by 1 person gotta give him credit.
I know this is old but do you still feel the same way and the 1.5 update? They added a lot of things.

The reason Harvest Moon games made after "A New Beginning" suck is because it's a different series. After that game, the series changed names in the west to Story of Seasons. Natsume owns the name "Harvest Moon" so when they split from Marvelous, the original series had to change names for copyright and trademark reasons.
EPS5000 thats why game that named harvest moon suks nowadays
EPS5000
for international only
In Japan it has the same name since it had came out.
Yeah, I really couldn't get into stardew valley that much.... I just didn't like the aesthetics that much. I think SOS trio of towns is far superior, but to each their own.
Yeah that’s the only thing that put me off but I will try it I was able to come to enjoy terrarias visuals
I agree... I played 10 hours and just didn’t enjoy it
I thought the game was nice, but as I played it felt lacking and empty, and this coming from a guy first playing in 2019. A noble effort I think but the game kinda drags.
Yep the style is too rough for me. Doraemon SOS has the best aesthetic imho
I understand Stardew Valley is the "best" game but I find myself enjoying SoS Trio of Towns a lot more.
I like the characters in Trio of Towns and Story of Seasons.
I um...sadly, I can't say I liked Stardew Valley's characters much.
I've played all of them and the best one imo is Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns
I'm playing that at the moment. However it's the hardest one to find good guides ❤️
Story of seasons have a lovable character
stardew valley have a good mechanic
harvestmoon now is a joke (referring to light of hope)
Ever since a new beggining, marvelous stopped working with natsume. Natsume is just using the title "Harvest moon" in order to gain money. Story of seasons IS harvest moon. Just without natsume. So in conclusion, Story of Seasons is a continuation of Harvest moon a new beggining. The other games that came out after Harvest moon a new beggining are just horrible and lazy games.
@@lworc they obviously know that
Well then sorry, i guess.
I think for the time that the old harvest moon games came out, they are great
Isn't Story Of Seasons and Harvest Moon technically just the same franchise just with weird legal issues giving it a name change
Cryo Phobica Yes this, but the creator that made Harvest Moon great is now working on SoS. :)
Inno Clarke People are talking about the company name, no the person-by-person development team, you fucking nerd.
Story of Season's is beautifully done. Again man you really are hit'in it. That character customization is so crucial to me personally. It really helps you immerse yourself and give a truly unique and personalized game play.
Old Harvest moon games have interesting storyline and characters background
Story of season have lot of new features that cant be find in old HM
Idk about stardew valley cuz I've never play it
As a huge fan of HM series, with all bias, I do recommend Stardew Valley.
I have many good memories with harvest moon 64 and with Harvest Moon Friends of mineral town on gameboy
Have you played the remake of fomt? I find it quite good.
Hehe. Fartelizer. Fart. Hehe
I agree with you on SOS catering on kids audience too much. The gameplay is streamlined too much for the same reason
I honestly agree. I also really likes harvest moon tale of two towns
I am currently playing SoS trio of towns and I am obsessed. Why do you not like the SoS? Intrested.
Off topic, if you like farming game like Stardew Valley, maybe it's worth trying out Sun Haven as well
For me it would be
1. Story of seasons trio of towns
2.havest moon magical melody
3. Stardew valley
4. Harvest moon animal parade
00:05 game name pls 🥺🥺🙏🙏
I grew up with Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town,Tale of Two Towns, Grand Bazaar etc but Stardew Valley won my heart. So much things to do and the characters are interesting like Shane and how I helped him with his depression, Penny and her sad life with Pam, Alex's story and why he end up living with his grandparents at Stardew, Haley's attitude and how she changed etc. The music is also great and I have more freedom in Stardew Valley because I can do lots of things and decorate my farm(even the town) any way I like.
Harvest moon Back to Nature is the best to me:the cute art, smooth gameplay, interesting history, good ambient, lot of easter eggs
Yes and a new hope is just like it.
Personally I prefer harvest moon (original ) and story of seasons over stardew valley.
Stardew Valley no contest. It's a modern game with the uniqueness and feel of the older Harvest Moon games.

Innocent Life >>>>>>>>>>>> Stardew Valley
The rest i agree with you
*Harvest Moon win. It was the game that started all this. Harvest moon sold into Story of Season. Stardew Valley got its idea from Harvest Moon.*
it didnt sell into anything.
Friends of Mineral Town has to be top 3 for HM!
I'd take everything made by Marvelous over SDV.. like you can never go wrong with the developers who started the farming simulators 😂
SDV is better. Don't matter who started it
@@aldinvejzovic3782 HM/SoS is the best. nothing beats the original bruh

SDV = good, too.
Game name in 1:20 scene
In fact I went back to my gameboy to play the classic gbc versions.
the first haverst moon game are from the same maker as story of seasons and the same series
Brute&Butter oh sorry i am then
TheMarcstef it's alright lol :)
What do you think of harvest moon the tales of two towns?plz reply
Looks like I might get me star dew valley to hold me over till a rune factory comes to switch
SDV is excellent on the Vita too, even though it only has up to version 1.2+, the PC version is on 1.3. But it's still an amazing vita game.
Dont worry dude, believe it or not, everyone is biased.
lol yikes didnt even play the other games
Zachary Quinlan Rune Factory is also a pretty mature series. Take Rune Factory 4, for example. There’s a lot of blatant sex talk in some of heart events.
Fore someone who is/was a fan of the gba version of harvest moon which game would you recommend :)?
Stv or the 2ds version of Story of seasons? Thanks.
if you can, play both, if you can't then I would recommend Stardew valley, not neccessary mean that I think SV is superior, it just gave me the feel of HM Mineral town better lol. But Trio of Town is great too nonetheless.
But nothing tops GBA's Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town imo
6:22 Dev*. There’s only one person working on the game, and his alias is ConcernedApe. The other company is the publisher.
Nothing beats HM 64, Back to Nature and Friends of Mineral Town
Part from 64 I agree . Not because 64 bad but because I've never played it . BTN and FOMT are by far the best , I would personally put A wonderful life up there to but that's just me .

Doesn’t seem like it 🤷🏻♂️
I’ve owned/played all of the Nintendo based HM games (at least all that came to North America) and the Rune Factory and Story of Seasons games.
Also how does SV look anything like Minecraft??¿?
Animal Parade was my favorite HM game can't believe it didn't make his top 5, I loved both of Story of seasons games and I just started SV on my new Switch and I'm really enjoying it
SV is great on the Switch!
So, should I still play the first story of seasons? I got bored pretty fast and early...
I would recommend going straight to Trio of Towns tbh.
Story of seasons - friends of mineral town remake is better than stardew valley change my mind
I hope you run a farm one day.
SanguineCypress thanks man, I love these games. Stay tuned for a video on Rune Factory in the works. (:
Back to Nature is my favourite Harvest Moon too. Never played 64 but I know they are the same game with a few things changed around. Friends of Mineral Town was also quite fun for me. Stardew Valley is nice, but as I played I felt more empty, none of the achievements felt that fulfilling.
Ik I am WAAAAY late but I'm commenting anyway. As someone who has played five harvest moon games and two story of seasons games, I personally think Stardew valley is better. I just got the game a few weeks ago and I'm addicted. It just feels more complete the harvest moon games I've played.
Love how you can be gay in stardew valley so it my number 1 with rune factory as 2 and story of the seasons 3
samantha stiers In recent Story of Seasons games, your character can crossdress, and though it technically doesn’t count as gay marriage, it’s a stretch.
The newest successor to Harvest Moon, My Time at Portia has gay marriage!
Friends if mineral remake you can be gay
Thank you for saying Terraria and not Terreria like some idiots say.
Also great video
Story of Seasons is the harvest moon official (bokujô monõgatari)
I find your voice incredibly soothing. Subscribed
Thank you for the sub and the compliment, I appreciate it. I'm going to be doing some videos on Rune Factory and more Stardew gameplay. :)
Stardew Valley is a great game but I love harvest moon a new hope only game to compare to back to nature for me.
@Brute&Butter
The creator of HM is not working on SOS.
Are we counting Little Dragon’s Cafe in this?
Stardew valley better than all farming games, including harvest moon
I love each one, but I have to say I like stardew valley more
5:56 - 6:08 I think so, Love it!
But but but... Story of Seasons is Harvest Moon -.-
Still a fanboy of FOMT
Same fomt both
Modern remake / back to nature and the gba remake are leagues better than stardew
What about My Time at Portia
I just wish Stardew had a few more things. Such as picking your birthday to have people give you gifts, or have your wife throw you a party.
More.minigames would be nice. Some old school 2D tennis or sports in general. All we really have is a casino and an arcade machine or two.
I honestly hate how they took the obnoxious "give your animals attention" thing from Harvest Moon too. It's just annoying and not worth my time.
Stardew valley as a game for this era doesn't have that many things to do
As you progress a lot of thing will be available to do.
@@milo1493 I reached year 2 pretty much did everything. Tried to befriend everyone but that got boring very quickly
@@iamsheel in just 2 years? did you catch all those rare fish too?
Rune Factory > Harvest Moon > Stardew Valley > Story of Seasons
Dont worry, just a super biased review
*Inhales*
1. Poor console porting. (many control and UI elements scream "mouse-oriented game design")
2. Daily Time/Clock sucks. (A case of poor synergy between Minecraft and HM mechanics, as you don't pass out in Minecraft)
3. Combat is weak. (Another problem that sterns from poor synergy. TerraCrafts let you compensate with enviromental control, HM/Rune Factory doesn't)
4. Personal Animals (Cat/Dog + Horse) felt shallow and sometimes even pointless. (That PS2 game, Save the Homeland, had more doggo training than this. SAVE THE FRIGGIN HOMELAND. Let that sink in...)
I could go on, but the bottom line is that SV tried to replicate the magic and nostalgia of HM without addressing many of the flaws left unsolved.
To me they will only ever be the publisher/translators of the old titles.
the split only happens after ANB so most games before then minus some spin offs are made by the original japanese company.
Harvest Moon =Story of Seasons. It had to do with licensing and name stuff, but it's the same Bokujō Monogatari series.
Tycoon type: u begin the game with 50k
WAAHT!!!! I didnt know that I picked animal lover and my animals affection increased faster
Thank you for this!
I agree
Harvest moon is best
Harvest Moon 64 will always be my FAVORITE 💖💖💖💖💖
I loved back to nature. I played it a lot ☺️ i still have it cuz nostalgia
Stardew valley is closest thing from original harvestmoon and gba version. I really enjoy playing stardew valley
Old HM/SoS are far superior to Stardew Valley
I agree I prefer old harvest moon and even pioneers of olive town the newest sos over stardew valley.
Stardew valley is 15 dollars.
Aptoid :
Shouldn't compare story of season really to stardew it would be runefactory vs stardew for the fighting elements
Ya know i like Rune Factory its like Zelda i played this game for a lot including Stardew and Zelda: Breath of the Wild but Zoras can drown
I voted for Stardew Valley. Don't trust me but take your hands on the game
