    So you had the lid off the incubator for a bit while helping that duck, does that harm the others waiting to hatch?

    • @CourtFarmChickens
      @CourtFarmChickens  2 года назад +5

      There are lots of factors that come into play when removing the lid, external temperature, humidity etc and I'm sure there will be people that disagree with me but I've found having it open for short periods of time causes no problems whatsoever. If the eggs were hatched naturally then they would be left alone in the open air whilst mum is eating and drinking.

    Thank you so much for making this video!
    I’m currently incubating 5 Muscovy eggs that are in lockdown. I’ve been told that I cannot open the incubator during lockdown, but our female failed to go broody, so I had no choice.
    I absolutely had to check yesterday and one had internally piped, but I don’t know how long she’s been piped for, so I made a safety hole 20 hours ago. I checked again this morning and the duckling is breathing in the air sac, but has not started to externally pip or begin pecking at the inside of the egg! I’m concerned that she’s shrink wrapped because wouldn’t she have started to zip by now?? I’m worried sick and have nobody to ask! I’ve never done this before and I’m truly scared!
    I hope you receive this message.
    Very kindly,
    Amy

      Hi Amy, I would very carefully remove small portions of the shell so you can see the condition of the membrane, ducks can take a few days to hatch so I wouldn't panic at this point. If the membrane is hard, crispy or yellow then it'll need help but if it's white, clear or there's blood then put it back and check every few hours. When hatched by a duck, the eggs will be left without heat whilst she feeds and drinks, they will also get kicked, pecked and knocked about. They're alot tougher than people think, hope this helps 😊

      @@CourtFarmChickens OMG! Thank you SO MUCH for replying to me!!
      How long can she stay internationally piped? I don’t hear her chirping so I’m afraid she could be malpositioned. Something is in the air sac but I’m going to take her into a dark room and really try to see. I’m terrified to assist and kill her! The humidity is 70% and as I mentioned I made a safety hole. But in past experience I’ve heard chirping when they internally pip, but this time I only hear movement. I wish I could send you a picture because I’m terrified that I’ll hit a vein and kill her.
      I intervened too early last year a lost one and I was devastated! Now I’m scared to death.
      Should she have started to externally pip by now? It’s been 24 hours since I noticed but it could be even longer! I see NO attempt to hatch, no pecking at the egg at all! I’m SO WORRIED!
      What would cause this delay in her starting to hatch?
      I’m going to candle the egg now and see if I can see a beak, if I don’t I don’t know what I’m going to do! I’ll look for veining as well. What happened last year really traumatized me because I actually killed my duckling my helping too soon!
      I appreciate your help and super fast response so much!!
      Can I let you know what I see when I candle the egg??

    I see some cracking but nothing has actually broke through. How long should I wait? Do they need an air hole? I’m so anxious 😬

    • @CourtFarmChickens
      @CourtFarmChickens  Год назад

      No air hole needed at the moment, it can take 48 hours from the first crack. Think of it as the eggs waters have burst now it needs to dilate, can take time.

    Hi I had a duckling who had pipped for almost 36 hours and made two tiny holes I pulled some of the shell away and the sac had separated some from the shell so I pulled a little bit of the sac away from the beak. A little blood came out. Is that okay? What should I do?

    • @CourtFarmChickens
      @CourtFarmChickens  2 года назад +1

      I would leave it be for a bit, it's not unusual for ducks to take 48 hours but keep an eye that it's making progress

    A warm sponge?Not towel, tissue ,or a q_ tip with a little warm water?

    • @CourtFarmChickens
      @CourtFarmChickens  10 месяцев назад

      Well yes, anything soft that can hold the water without harming the chick will work fine

    The egg I found is quiet it's wet like it's open just like the other one oh my God I'm so nervous and I'm home alone and I have no idea so I just leave it alone or I don't want to rip it open because you said he'll die but it's quiet

    • @CourtFarmChickens
      @CourtFarmChickens  2 года назад +1

      Without being there it's hard to call, chip away at the hole gently to reveal the beak, stop if there is any blood.

    • @CourtFarmChickens
      @CourtFarmChickens  Год назад +1

      The other eggs hadn't piped, therefore no risk. Also the amount of time was well within the tolerance. Shrink wrapping is caused by no humidity.
