World’s Best Shooting Glasses: The ESS Crossbow Kit

- Hands down the best shooting and daily wear sunglass combination I have used: the ESS Crossbow Suppressor 2X kit will impress you. For shooters, you will find the super thin "Suppressor" temples to be a godsend. They fit slimly under your hearing protectors and won't push out the earcups. And they’re stay in position, even in Run N Gunning. The included thin elastic retention strap can be integrated. I'd been looking for this for years. The "Crossbow" comfortable and stay-in-place frame also comes in the kit. The two frames are easily exchanged between the polycarbonate clear, bronze, and smoke lenses included (3 glasses for 1 price really). Lens quality is outstanding with perfect colorations and fatiguing in wear (optical quality). The copper tinted lens is a favorite; very versatile. The ESS Crossbow/Suppressor glasses are ANSI rated and coated for scratch protection. The lens exchange, shown here, is fast, simple, and positive unlike other systems I've seen. The case is excellent: holds it all, good zipper, soft foam compartments for it all and MOLLE compatible. I have bought three pairs of this excellent system, these are the best I've found especially for the money.///////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 11 out of 10

I wore Crossbows in Afghanistan. The yellow lenses helped driving at night, and felt fine with a headset on.
I'm department firearms instructor and have been using these since their inception. Made in USA. Oakley bought the company and it is now a subsidiary. And Oakley was also bought and is now owned by LUXOTICA. ESS eyewear has the toughest lenses and are more scratch resistant than oakleys. On the job or on the shooting range I hated having to baby my expensive oakleys. I never worry about my ESS lenses. Excellent product great customer service but gobbled up by European eyewear conglamorate
I'd already seen these before online and kept them in mind, but now that I've seen your review, I'm sold!
I've been wearing these as sunglasses/shooting glasses for over 3 years now & I love them. Previously I used the ESS ICE system, but these are much nicer. I prefer the suppressor frame over the crossbow frame, even for daily wear, they just fit my head better.
Thanks so much for the review. I've been hoping you'd do a shooting glasses review.
I picked a set of these up after watching this video and Nutn doesn't lie. These are the best eye pro I've ever worn under my ear pro. These things rock. Thanks for the recommendation and review Nutn, without it, I probably wouldn't have discovered these.
you'll love it in the helmet for the motorcycle as well, no temple pressure
Great review I was Looking at the smith Optic elite aegis, but you've sold me on these!
This is the first review where I have had the product before nutn reviewed it haha. Love these glasses!!
thank you, exactly what I was looking for
Good review. This is what I've been looking for =)
got those even with presciption inserts from the military. I was watching some of your outdoor camping and survival stuff. When I was in the 82nd Airborne back in the 90's we had no room for a sleeping bag in our rucksacks, so we would take our poncho liner and space blanket and string then together and lay on our poncho to stay warm. We were infantry so we could have no real shelter, but it worked.
Awesome video as always. I appreciate your "lengthy" (thorough) reviews. Let the haters hate. Thanks for keeping us in the loop and doing the research for us all!!!! Keep it up it is appreciated.

Glad to see this review. I've been using the suppressors for two years and I love them. fyi, they have a prescription insert on optics planet, which I use. The insert adds a bit of weight up front so I have to use the retention strap.
And just at the point when the set of shooting glasses I've had for years is about to give up the ghost once and for all. Nice timing.
Thanks for the review, Nutn! Sold!
I've rocked these for years & love them. I also have prescription glasses & ESS does have a few options for prescription lens inserts that replace the nose pad.
These are the pair my father got on both of his recent deployments. I also own a pair! Absolutely amazing :)
Been using these for years... lovem
Looks perfect for riding my GSXR K1! Nice that theyre dual use, shooting and sportbike riding.
Just ordered a pair from your suggested link. Thanks Nutn.
I have a pair of ESS Crossbows that i got off of their website and I absolutely love them.
I wore these all summer at BCT in Ft. Jackson for eyepro. Super comfortable! Now I use them as sunglasses and they are great :)
Brilliant, that is a genuine problem solver. I am going to look into Rx for these.
I wear these for work, with the RX insert using the photochromatic lenses, great fit and almost zero pressure. The lense darkness is good enough, but its not like its a smoked polarized mirror lense or anything. I also wear them with my motorcycle helmet, also great, no pressure, and can ride visor up because this is eye protection. Good price for what you get, and great customer support. I had a lense get severely scratched from work, and I called ESS, had a conversation of what went about, and sent me a new lense. Great guys, great product, and saved my eyes.
Thanks Nutn! I've been hoping for an eyewear video for a while.
I was kind of hoping for more details and general info (some ppl say advertised Z87+ vs most everyday poly glasses makes no difference for impact?), but I still appreciate the video.
The Army issued a pair of the Crossbows to me at Basic training at Fort Benning. They lasted all 16 of Infantry OSUT no problem. I eventually broke them during a training exercise and I loved them so much I bought another pair. I would recommend them highly. And yes they offer prescription frames and nose pieces
The student has become the master. Nice job Doodle! ;)
+tony elum I'm glad he came around, because I recall getting my ass reamed for buying him a pair of these at first. __TD
+nutnfancy Dad's can be stubborn, justice is yours!
I just recently got a pair of Revision Sawflies. Very similar features to the ESS. I've used those before in the Canadian Forces and I loved them. They fit my head perfectly. I recently started a welding course and I got tired of the shitty safety glasses slipping off and fogging up under my helmet so I decided to buy a pair. Even if it was little expensive, now I have great sun, shooting and welding glasses. Totally worth it.
did a review/unboxing on these a few months ago. amazing glasses/value
Awesome glasses that really protect my eyes without hindering clarity. Its awesome you can additionally purchase prescription inserts
ESS is a good brand altogether. I was introduced to them as a grunt when I was still in. That was when Oakleys were all the rage.
Where ya been Nutn.. lol ... ESS shooting glasses are amazing and the price is even better. I got a pair on Botac for $15...NRA edition w/bronze lens and American Flag carry bag. But this system you're showing now is rockin ...........thanks brother
ESS makes a good product. I was issued them in the Marine Corps, and they performed very well. The only complaint I could voice about them involves the prescription inserts. Due to the curvature of the eye shield, it would cause the ESS prescription inserts to bow, which would distort my vision. Other than that, nothing but love for the system.
Nice.
Thanks for the video
Thanks Nut'n. I have been using Oakley M-frames for years, solved that problem by removing the rubber on each side of the b blades. BUT the cost is high, $129 PLUS the extra lenses at $75 ! I'll try the ESS as the value looks great.
Yep they are my favorite brand also although I've only used 3 different makers glasses.
I scored about 10 of those cases out of the garbage recently. They fit my Oakleys and my cell charger. Two items I use everyday all day in the car and or work truck. Keeps then together!!
Love your "Table Top" reviews Nut'n ! Once again excellently done. I saw the annotation "non-polarized" do they come in Polarized ? I prefer Polarized in the outdoors. Thank You Sir for your Hard work on TNP, Truly Appreciated from a
" Double Owl " .....
We had these at Army basic training. The people with glasses had prescription lenses that get inserted inside the safety lens.
I've been looking at these!!!
Yes you can add a prescription lens insert.
I've had ESS Crossbows issued to me but I still prefer the Sawfly Revision
keep in mind I have to use the RX inserts
I have the crossbows with the prescription inserts. Great for the price. The ESS website usually runs 35% off sales around the major holidays.
If you look hard enough you can find them cheaper than 90, i ordered a set 2 weeks ago for $75 shipped. Had them when i was in the service. i loved them so much i had to get a set when i got out. Great all around glasses!
I've been wearing the Crossbows for a few years. I would get them at the Firehouse Expo in Baltimore in July $60 2x kit show special.
Managed to pick up a pair second hand for £15. I KNEW that they were worth more than that. But serious, they are an awesome pair of specks and would highly recommend!
Hey Nutn, like you I'm getting a bit older and my vision has definitely changed ...... I run HD night sights with the tritium inserts. But even with them it can be difficult to track the front sight, especially of you just wake up, use glasses, etc.... So what do you think about an "illuminated front fixed sighting system for handguns, etc..
@nutnfancy, Another very competitive option is the Smith Optics Aegis Elite. Similar setup for about $90 on Amazon. It comes in a regular version, a "compact" version, and an "Asian fit" version. Zipper pouch, frame, 3 lenses. Frame is metal, comes in different colors, and can be bent with fingers (on purpose) to fit your head. The sides are extremely thin and fit perfectly under ear pro.
I would keep the low profile set with my howard light ears and I would keep the regular set with my surefire ear inserts (my travel set) Thanks for the review Nutn... I was thinking about getting some of the ESS goggles for my dualsport riding and wasn't sure how good of a company it was, but you convinced me.
I love my pair. got them issued to me when I got to this new base I'm at. I had to get prescription lens for them and they just click right in. have a clear and shaded pair.
I have been using these for years. They are fantastic. Two important points you didn't mention. The first is that ESS is a military supplier and these were issued to military personnel. When I bought them they were incredibly difficult to source because of our overseas military activities. Number two these are ideally suited for prescriptions. They sell a nose piece which accommodate a prescription lens system that fits on too the nose piece. The system is very flexible because the prescription lenses can be used with all the front eye shield with no need to spend more money. Check out the manufacturers web-site for complete info.
For guys that need prescription glasses, Oakley makes great frames out of titanium that have very thin sides which don't interfere too much with ear muffs. I stepped on my old pair full force one time after getting whacked in the face with a piece of heavy machinery and they actually held together okay. Glass didn't break and the frame still fit on my face afterwards. I still needed a new pair, but I'd imagine they could take a pellet of bird shot or fragment of shrapnel and not shatter or fail. Another tip, get them with UV dimming lenses. It's great to be able to get out of the car and have them go full dark within a minute on their own without needing to switch to prescription sunglasses.
nutnfancy, I have the ESS ice which doesn't have the thin stems but the nose piece is the same and they do make a prescription insert. mine have the bifocal lens on the top so I can shoot pistol and be able to see the front sight in focus. Works great for those of us with older eyes.
A guy at work was telling me about these glasses and he loves them.
Awesome to see an Eye Pro review! Im not going to lie though, I'm in the USMC and the Crossbows are standard issue, and I'm not a huge fan. I've never had a lens last longer than one day in the field without being super scratched. The glasses fog up faster than a shower door when you wear them with a kevlar helmet, and I've broken the arms off of every pair I've been issued. In my opinion, ESS are good for the range, but if you do some really hard, sweat inducing work, you're probably going to hate them. I haven't gotten to use the suppressors, but Crossbows are a no-no for me. Just my two cents, still great video!! keep it up!!!
Nutn, could you do a side by side of these and the Revision Sawfly? They are a comparable set and I's be interested to hear your opinions.
90 dollars!!!! Thats awsome. Im in.
TNP: When will you do a review for compass / survival compass systems?
My go to for eye pro on the range has been cheap home depot 3M type safety glasses. When the glasses ghost themselves into someone else's system I'm not terribly upset and the arms of the glasses are generally a relatively thin profile.
Just to let you know u can get prescription for then. we where issued the regular crossbow s for a deployment. they make a difference nose piece that work with prescription. kinda like the gas mask insert or some ppl pay there own money to get the prescription glued on the insides. there was a both at a px that did it so I assume any eye glass shop can.
I am watching this vid 7 hours after it has posted. Sold out on Amazon. The price is now 117 and has a 1-2 month wait :(.
+MonGo WonGo Since your comment is thumbed up this will reach more guys. You guys should check out the Canadian Amazon. With a strong american dollar (to the loonie) That should offset the shipping cost of getting it to you in under a month. Hope that helps!
I actually bought one of these not too long ago. affordable and effective, but I still like my Wiley -X Jakes.
I believe ESS is a sister company to Oakley.
oakley makes these. There is a prescription insert for these as well. yellow and copper lenses available aswell
Nutn, I think you should take a look at the Smith Aegis Echo. It has the same kind of temples but it has a much more refined lens change system that doesn't require you to touch the lens with your hands to avoid oil on the lens.
Smith optics Hideout Tactical Sunglasses. My favorites yet! More $$$ but they are soooo nice!
+Justin Mikola Yeah, Smith Optics actually wanted to hook us up for testing and evaluation, but Nutnfancy refused since they're too expensive to recommend. He saw their pricelist and said "Hell no, that's too expensive". I think they're coming around with the Aegis release though. It's not as high-priced as their Pivlocks ~$240...._____Doodle
I am fortunate enough to have these issued to me before my last 3 deployments. So now I have like 12 pairs lol. I have been issued Oakley, smith, revision, and ess. By far its in between the ess and Oakley as my favorite. Oh and ess also makes a really good set of goggles too.
Hell yes, I've got 2 pairs, smoked and clear. I still can't believe the Army let me keep them when I got out.
So I have been watching tnp for nearly 4 years now and just realized that I haven't been subscribed this whole time . Enjoy ever video.
We get issued these in the Army now, and I have to agree, they are great for their price. It definitely beats buying a set of M Frames. the only complaint I would say is that I have had the rubber nose piece come off on multiple pairs in Afghanistan.
I was about to order Crossbow's from a webshop. Luckily I decided to go and try them out first, with muffs. Turned out that my head and Sordin combo didn't work well with Crossbow's. I tried ESS Ice Naro 3's and it felt like... nothing! Perfect fit and very comfortable. I sometimes forget they are on me and go inside and wonder why it's so dark.Try before you buy.
Smith Optics Elite has a similar offering which is also excellent.
Is this the first eyewear review?! Gotta try some Wiley X Air Rage. Shoot them with some different caliber rounds and see what they can take. I got some for $60 and they're killer.
The Smith Optics Aegis Echo is the best eye protection you can buy. They have extra thin temples like these--except they did it first!
Why do I just buy everything that Nutn reviews. Oh yeah, cause he's a true badass!
Updated link with the three lenses like Nutnfancy reviewed for same price. ESS Eyewear Crossbow Suppressor 2X Deluxe Kit, Black: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004OFRLQI
i'm buying it right now, they are Z87 rated. i'm a wire technician for at&t and they require eye protection all the time with Z87 rated glasses. since i'm going to use them for 10 to 12 hours daily i will be able to provide you with a good feedback about them
It's usually so hot here in ca, I hate sweaty ears thus I hate big ole ear muff style ear protection. Ear plugs are the way to go for me. What do u have against them nuttin?
Obviously I commented before watching your video, my bad.
Yours are cool!
Extracting foot from boca.
btw, nutn we still need that review on the budget shotties. Pardner Pump vs Maverick 88.
I will gladly provide the Pardee Protector, I still have my 11-87 for HD
I got a pair of crossbows for free because some medic forgot them in my Humvee a few years back. Good glasses but I prefer my Oakley SI M frames.
Ess makes good stuff they were issued gear in the corps
Love mine.
With everything happening in the world right now, definitely looking forward to the next nutnfancy philosophy vid.
Smith Optics has been doing this for years with the Elite Aegis Echo and Echo II
Been wearing these for years, great, but one issue is the nose rubber tends to come loose; hopefully they've fixed that in newer models. I've had to glue mine several times.
Yes you can get option for perscription inserts, I have a set for my competition glasses
same here. it is a little frustrating constantly fixing the nose piece
I use the standard crossbows with Peltor 6S earpro and i dont have an issue
ESS ICE so far... do i need these?
sold out when it was in my cart.
they are available from other sellers
I have a big head and most sunglasses don't fit me. How are the fit on these?
The product link in the description now goes to a kit with 2X Tri-Tech Fit frames and /no/ Suppressor frame, FYI.
I like the Dewalt ones at Lowe's, 10 bucks a pair and when they get scratched up just chuck them.
How good is the antifog on this compared to Edge Eyewear. My $30 Edge never fogs up buy buy my $100 Oakley would fog up like crazy.
Hey TNP, stabilized oxygen, or h2o2?
love my ess glasses... can't swing em for day to day wear i like my maui jim's better but i LOVE them on the range indoor and outdoor!
I wear prescription sunglasses so I will never review most safety glasses. these look cool for sure though.
+mixflip You can get prescription lenses
www.opticsplanet.com/ess-urx-prescription-insert-universal-rx.html
The insert type systems SUCK!
you are wearing two pair of glasses which doubles the Dirt and Doubles all issues!
+John M I wear contacts while shooting. They are just Basic lenses and don't correct all the same things that my actual glases do, but I can shoot well enough... at least not limited by my vision.
+mixflip I have the same problem. I've been running the Wiley X SG1 with prescription lenses. Works well.
+Jon Shelton I hate those goofy insert style adapters. I prefer just wearing my prescription tinted sunglasses.
what is your opinion on these for backpacking in the winter and also snowboarding in the backcountry?
For backpacking and snowboarding I would get Oakley Holbrook or Frogskins. Why don't you just use goggles for snowboarding? Oakley has some of the best Goggles too lol
i mean sure for going down i use oakley goggles.. hah
i mean for going up the hill
If only I would have seen this video two days ago before I ordered two pairs of Wiley X with their this thick ass ear pieces. :( I was looking for a good brand of shooting glasses and just kind of had to guess. Oh well, I might still try these out.
Looks like Daisy brand ones they sell at ranges in Australia.
1:38 "homie don't play dat" Nutn just went ghetto for a sec. Actually, his name is kinda ghetto when you think about it lol
