World’s Best Shooting Glasses: The ESS Crossbow Kit

  • Hands down the best shooting and daily wear sunglass combination I have used: the ESS Crossbow Suppressor 2X kit will impress you. For shooters, you will find the super thin "Suppressor" temples to be a godsend. They fit slimly under your hearing protectors and won't push out the earcups. And they’re stay in position, even in Run N Gunning. The included thin elastic retention strap can be integrated. I'd been looking for this for years. The "Crossbow" comfortable and stay-in-place frame also comes in the kit. The two frames are easily exchanged between the polycarbonate clear, bronze, and smoke lenses included (3 glasses for 1 price really). Lens quality is outstanding with perfect colorations and fatiguing in wear (optical quality). The copper tinted lens is a favorite; very versatile. The ESS Crossbow/Suppressor glasses are ANSI rated and coated for scratch protection. The lens exchange, shown here, is fast, simple, and positive unlike other systems I've seen. The case is excellent: holds it all, good zipper, soft foam compartments for it all and MOLLE compatible. I have bought three pairs of this excellent system, these are the best I've found especially for the money.///////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 11 out of 10

I'm department firearms instructor and have been using these since their inception. Made in USA. Oakley bought the company and it is now a subsidiary. And Oakley was also bought and is now owned by LUXOTICA. ESS eyewear has the toughest lenses and are more scratch resistant than oakleys. On the job or on the shooting range I hated having to baby my expensive oakleys. I never worry about my ESS lenses. Excellent product great customer service but gobbled up by European eyewear conglamorate

The Army issued a pair of the Crossbows to me at Basic training at Fort Benning. They lasted all 16 of Infantry OSUT no problem. I eventually broke them during a training exercise and I loved them so much I bought another pair. I would recommend them highly. And yes they offer prescription frames and nose pieces

ESS makes a good product. I was issued them in the Marine Corps, and they performed very well. The only complaint I could voice about them involves the prescription inserts. Due to the curvature of the eye shield, it would cause the ESS prescription inserts to bow, which would distort my vision. Other than that, nothing but love for the system.

I have been using these for years. They are fantastic. Two important points you didn't mention. The first is that ESS is a military supplier and these were issued to military personnel. When I bought them they were incredibly difficult to source because of our overseas military activities. Number two these are ideally suited for prescriptions. They sell a nose piece which accommodate a prescription lens system that fits on too the nose piece. The system is very flexible because the prescription lenses can be used with all the front eye shield with no need to spend more money. Check out the manufacturers web-site for complete info.

For guys that need prescription glasses, Oakley makes great frames out of titanium that have very thin sides which don't interfere too much with ear muffs. I stepped on my old pair full force one time after getting whacked in the face with a piece of heavy machinery and they actually held together okay. Glass didn't break and the frame still fit on my face afterwards. I still needed a new pair, but I'd imagine they could take a pellet of bird shot or fragment of shrapnel and not shatter or fail. Another tip, get them with UV dimming lenses. It's great to be able to get out of the car and have them go full dark within a minute on their own without needing to switch to prescription sunglasses.

Awesome to see an Eye Pro review! Im not going to lie though, I'm in the USMC and the Crossbows are standard issue, and I'm not a huge fan. I've never had a lens last longer than one day in the field without being super scratched. The glasses fog up faster than a shower door when you wear them with a kevlar helmet, and I've broken the arms off of every pair I've been issued. In my opinion, ESS are good for the range, but if you do some really hard, sweat inducing work, you're probably going to hate them. I haven't gotten to use the suppressors, but Crossbows are a no-no for me. Just my two cents, still great video!! keep it up!!!

just a thought...but for those who require prescription lenses Randolph engineering makes glasses that are extremely thin and do t mess with ear muffs....they are standard issue to navy flyers as they work great in our helmets or under our Davy Clark's.... I know they can be pretty expensive... but if you are getting prescription lenses they are worth looking at.

I have been using ESS products for over 10 years now. Despite their excellent design and looks, I found their build quality and materials not up to the standards from years past. I really noticed this for products I bought after ESS got acquired by Oakley.
I have found my self replacing many lenses on my Crossbow and ICE glasses by them cracking in the center where the eyepiece goes. I have also found the ICE lenses cracking where the frame pieces attach to the lens. On the Crossbow lenses, I found the inner anti-glare coating go dull after not much use (only cleaned with ESS microfiber cloth and OpDrops) impeding vision. I have also found the nose pieces break on me due to the plastic degradation, and the rubber separating from the hard plastic.
The corrective lens inserts will stick the glass forwards, making it loose much of its defectiveness. I instead recommend their "Ballistic Sunglasses" with Rx inserts, which are very good.
Overall, for me, ESS glasses are like Butler Creek scope caps. Made out of cheesie materials, but the only game in town that it's worth buying despite their flaws.

These are the Eye pro that were issued to me in basic training. They are good to some extent, but when you wear them for more than 12 hours strait they will rub the back of your ears raw. They killed my 20/20 vision since I had to wear them everyday for nine weeks.

+jpenna1976 from what I have been told, if you hold a pair of sunglasses or eye pro out away from your face and look at an object through the eye pro and then without. flipping back and forth between the two, you can see the amount of distortion they cause. I have been told prolonged use of eye pro will cause your eyes to adapt to the distortion.

    • @jpenna1976
      @jpenna1976 9 лет назад

Sure, that is true. Everytime you get new prescription glasses, it takes a day or two to for eyes to adjust. Rarely the lenses are identical with the previous. But, it is natural for eyse to adjust and it should not leave permanent effects.

If you look in earlier vids you'll see me using gascan s model and the tan gascans too. Actually, their transitions-lensed shooters as well. +troopcom I think its called reverse polarization. Have you ever been at a gas station wearing your polarized sunglasses and you can't read the screen until you tilt your head? That's because the screen on the pump is also polarized and with the sun glasses the light rays don't make it to your eye. Same thing I think.

nutnfancy please check this out I think you will love it. I got the utg bipods and love them very light and strong. I'm with you on the troy alpha rail I have them on 3 ar15s love them . well when I was at the utg sight I was looking at the rails I know they have a bad rep but the the new utg pro line I got the utg pro super slim keymod 15 inch rail, ebay it cost 139 free shipping comes with everything you need to install 100% rock solid very very detailed. the top rail has been smoothed up so it is less likely to snag up. now here is the best part it's half the weight of a troy and cost about 70ish less. I will buy it off you if you don't like it. they are that good. completely customizable. I love long rails but weight sux well with the utg pro super slim keymod you can put that longer rail on . I'm doing this because I think you should help a American company if you can. utg made some crap rails so not many ppl will buy them. the utg pro line is a different animal the details are better then troy and the weight is crazy light and it's as rock solid as you could ask for. please help our American brothers out. I have 3 troy alpha rails that I'm selling, the utg pro super slim keymod will go on all of them. now I only bought the utg pro super slim keymod. because it looked the best to me and was the lightest. but I would say all the utg pro line will be the same , remember it is the pro line. nutnfancy this is what ur about alot of us not have money like you but still want solid stuff at affordable price. I think you will drop troy alpha rails after you check out the utg pro get the utg pro super slim keymod. please ebay was the cheapest price I found it don't pay more then 150 after shipping because you can get it cheaper if you look utg website I think it was like 179 or something I know they have high prices so the dealer can look good but please but it and show the guys that are not rich like you. lol

+Nutnfancy , checkout EdgeEyewear. They are based right here in Utah and have multiple models in their tactical line with the "Thin Temple" frames you're so turned on about. Haha, actually, would you do a review? I have my opinion, but always value hearing what you have to say about gear. It's the best bang for the buck I've come across so far...yes better than ESS. Plus, they have a 2nd kind of cool to boot.
