What's your favourite way to use automation?
modulating other tracks!
vocal/melody samples and making percussive automation on the track volume as a "stutter" "tremolo" effect.
My “favourite” automation in the sense of “most often” used is volume automation. But I never use it on “Mixer | Track Volume” as you did in this video. I always put an Utility at the end of my tracks’ effects chain and automate its Gain parameter instead. This way I am still able to easily change the overall track volume in the mix without having to mess with the automation curve.
Aside from this I’m mainly automating selected parameters of the synths used to deliberately modify their sounds over time.
i love automating reverbs and delays, a solo guitar track with simple jazz chords can turn into an intense horror soundscape or a glittery bright swell of color, the very subtlest reverb automation on vocals at the end of phrases can do a better job of indicating song progression than all yo reversed transitions and cheesy breaks and dumb shit, when you have something that rises if the reverb isnt changing with it i notice and that sounds like shit.
LFO's modulating other LFO's which modulate everything else to create randomized generative tracks which can go on for hours/days and not get boring!

Automation is everything for me. I love Serum and Massive's complex lfos/performance envelopes so this is a way to allow this type of modulation to almost any synth/fx. I find myself mostly using it for the obvious filter modulation uses but the possibilities are really vast. Reverbs are especially fun and can be done subtly or extreme. Modulate a combination of 4 or 5 effects and you can create some Aphex Twin style craziness.
I've been learning audio on my own for the last 5 years. I've gotten to the point were I can filter out good and bad advice/information, and the point were I get bored watching a "how to" because I know most of what they're saying... but i can say that for the first time in a while, I actually learned new and cool things watching this video. Im learning ableton live to expand my skillset, and possibly change daw? Great video!

Great tutorial. Thanks so much. Only thing unclear was the bit about recording automation in real time via controller. (Which record function is used, since ableton does not make this very straightforward?) Of course I can and will RTFM, and it certainly is good to dive in to the manual with a specific question.

By any chance I know ableton has 3 different packages for purchase. Would I get access to these automization’s if I purchase the cheapest package, or the 2nd expensive package, or would I have to purchase the full ableton package to have access to these tools you were showing in the video ?? Great video! the thing I always have a problem with is when i set some automations (let's say on volume) but further into the project i want te volume to be a little higher in general, then all my automation on the volume is disabled...

3:00 I was looking for this! Could not find it in the manual (it mentions range in the shapes part, but not how to set that), didn't manage to figure out trying (so by now spent already some two hours). Entering a full amplitude sine wave often is too drastic, so how to scale it? Now I know. Many thanks!

Edit: Turns out pressing A doesn't work, and I have to click the tiny link button in the viewer thingy
@@jonathanallen2874 If you press tab or the three horizontal/vertical lines in the top right you change from the intruments view to the music view(?) There, there's a tiny button with two circles connected by a diagonal line (to the right of the "set" and left and right arrows and to the left of the lock button)

what would be the reason why i can't insert the LFO shape after i right click. I get no options to do that. RUclips tutorials never seem to work exactly the same as demonstrated.
When I turn on automation it only allows me to automate the master track, not the individual track that I click. What am I doing wrong?

I'm clicking on the letter A but I'm not seeing the orange line - it just played the A on my keyboard
You need to have your MIDI keyboard disabled (there is a keyboard button on the top right corner of the DAW)
Apparently u cant press the A command if the laptop midi keyboard is on

Click+Drag select, like he does at 2:51, except select the whole region that has edited automation and not just a particular region. Right-click > Delete.

Such little detail.. "just press a key" doesn't work fo me you should be more specific!
Make sure Midi keyboard is OFF (top right of the screen looks like a 3 key keyboard highlighted yellow, click to disable and it should fix).
