  • More than 300 artifacts from #dennishopper’s life and work as an actor, director, writer, artist and legendary counterculture icon will go under the hammer at Julien’s Auctions and ‪@TurnerClassicMovies‬ Legends:Hollywood and Royalty auction online and in Beverly Hills on September 6, 7 & 8.
This exclusive collection of items from acclaimed actor of the iconic films, Easy Rider, #BlueVelvet, Rebel Without a Cause, and Apocalypse Now, that helped define their eras and continue to entertain and inform viewers today, and the director, photographer, artist, and sculptor, and revered collector, who helped launch the careers of artists, such as #AndyWarhol, Ed Ruscha, and #RoyLichtenstein, was uncovered at Hopper’s beloved El Cortez Theatre in #Taos, New Mexico - a serene small town which served as his refuge from Hollywood and his final resting place.
Inspired by his friend, costar, and fellow icon #JamesDean to take up painting and photography, Hopper would go on to demonstrate a prodigious skill in both art forms but would become a renowned collector himself and a coveted presence at art exhibitions around the globe.
Among the important items in this sale are Hopper’s earliest surviving painting, an abstract impressionistic portrait of a face. The actor had sent it to his brother David shortly before a fire in 1961 destroyed his all of his early paintings, photographs, and art collection. Many of his later paintings have also been made available to the public for the first time, including a series of “Hinge” paintings he created in 1984.
One of Hopper’s many notable traits was his generous championing of other young artists who would eventually become household names, such as Andy Warhol. An incredibly rare signed Polaroid the Pop Art icon took of Hopper is among the auction’s highlights.
There are also many important relics from Hopper’s storied career. Among them is a vintage portable Remington Quiet-Riter typewriter he personally used, and his personal editing notes and equipment from The Last Movie.
Items pertaining to the production, development and other ephemera of Hopper’s directorial debut and breakthrough film #EasyRider will be showcased including: a signed letter from #MilesDavis to Hopper, detailing Davis’s ideas for the soundtrack for Easy Rider and his desire to be involved in the film that offers a tantalizing glimpse of an alternate version of the film; a celebrity screening list for the counterculture epic that included among others Darryl Zanuck, Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, Kirk Douglas, and Sam Arkoff; a Nudies tuxedo jacket worn by Hopper to the 1970 Academy Awards when Easy Rider was nominated; Hopper’s own paperback copy of Another Country by James Baldwin with the first few pages torn off to reveal the first page of Book One, which is titled "Easy Rider," presumed to have inspired the title for the film; a handwritten note by Hopper on the Easy Rider letterhead that has the yellow film poster across the top with the words "Cannes Film Festival Winner! 'Best Film By a New Director'” with Hopper’s response and interest in the El Coretz Theatre in Taos, New Mexico, which he eventually purchased; Hopper’s letter from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences with logistics for his 1970 Easy Rider nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the 42nd Academy Awards.
