DIY Weller desoldering add-on providing suction for a DSX-80

    Here is one for all the Weller WSF 81D owners out there ...
    ...
    ... Anybody?
    This is a quick overview of my Weller vacuum add-on. It can easily be powered by a WSF-81D Soldering station and with some more tinkering probably by all the other 80W stations as well. It provides suction for a DSX-80 desoldering iron.

    Hindsight is 20/20, but I always add a transistor to switch loads from the signal output. It's not that hard to do and can save you a headache in case things go left.

      and if they do go nuclear ... usually you will blow up the transitor and not whatever far fancier and hard-to-reach switching circuitry is further down the line (if you did install a series resitor ;))

    Pretty awesome making the soldering iron upgrade itself. That would be like if you lost a finger but was able to build a new, better finger and surgically install it.

    i dont think the G code converter added a radius to the edges, rather it just shows the toolpath. the piece did come out square with no blends...

    Nice presentation.
    I have yet to see a motorized desoldering tool that produce vacuum to a preset value (1 to 0bar range) then automatically release it at the point of service, molten solder to be evacuated. It also knows the state of solder junction, solid versus molten solder.

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 3 года назад

      What do you mean “release it at the point of service”?

    • @philoso377
      @philoso377 3 года назад

      @@tookitogo it means this : store vacuum in a small vacuum container, pull the trigger to "release" vacuum at the work (melted solder). This is like a spring operated desoldering vacuum with the spring replaced by a vacuum pump to build up vacuum ready to deploy. This way a tiny motor is suffice.

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 3 года назад +2

      @@philoso377 The reason we don’t do that is because that’s not a particularly good way to desolder. The huge, unique benefit of continuous vacuum is that it enables you to maintain suction while moving the component leg around. This allows the incoming cool air to cool down the leg and hole to below the melting point of the solder, preventing the leg from re-adhering to the inside of the hole. Take a look at the desoldering video from Pace Worldwide, it illustrates this really well. Single-shot vacuum, like a solder sucker or bulb (even the ones attached to a soldering iron) doesn’twork well on plated through-hole boards because they suck up most of the solder, but enough remains that component legs stay attached. Same thing with wick. Continuous vacuum is fundamentally different, and actually solves that problem.

    Hallo Marco, ich frage mich/dich ob es nicht angemessen wäre den Motorausgang mit einer extra Kapazität gegen den hohen Anlaufstrom zu puffern? Oder ist das nicht nötig, obwohl der kleine Transistor zeigte dass der Output ursprünglich nur für wenige mA ausgelegt war?
    English:
    Dear Marco, I am wondering whether it wouldn't be adequate to add an additional Capacitance to the switched output for the Motor, just to calculate for its undoubtedly high inrush current?
    The tiny output transistor to me shows that the output wasn't originally designed with such a load in mind... So in means of improving the stability (and potentially lifetime) of your project would you suggest putting in an additional capacitor on the output?
