So one of my favourite content creators on RUclips plays one of my all-time favourite time-sinks? Score! You're awesome CGPGrey, and I wish you were my teacher when I was in school.
Close. OpenTTD is based on Transport Tycoon Deluxe, which came out in 1995, which was itself an expansion to the original Transport Tycoon which came out in 1994. TTD and RCT look very similar because they share the main developer, the legendary (in the 90s) Chris Sawyer. Roller Coaster Tycoon came out in 1999 though, so there's a bit of a difference in that regard.
Man the music on this is awesome when your mind just can't get restful. I love playing openTTD. About the signals, put the entry signal before the cross at the station(only one direction, towards the station) and the exit signals on the side closer to the station, in both directions. The entry signal will only allow a train to go into the station if one of the exit signals is green. The exit signal acts as a normal signal, just it triggers entry signals. wiki.openttd.org has more if you like..
Yeah, the UI is virtually identical in all of Chris' games. What you are seeing here isn't exactly how TTD looked like, CGP is probably using the default tileset and graphics included with openTTD, which is the open-source adaptation of TTD. If you look at a Transport Tycoon Deluxe video alongside an RCT video, you'll see they're pretty much the same UI wise.
I never understood how signals work in this game, I just built bridges over tracks xD And its WAY to easy to make infinite money, just build ONE track from a coal mine and a power station that are quite far away and it will give you like 50K-100K money in one go! I usually made 3 of these then spammed airports xD Was so much fun! And easy... :P
I've been a fan of this game when I first heard of it around 2012 (And little me was only 8) I forgot to pick it up during the steam sale, but I never wanted to pirate it, since I want to support the devs. Now with me seeing this video it urges me to the (pardon my language) naughty thing.
Graham J I can relate to your comment so much. Strategy games have been the only games that I have thoroughly enjoyed, so much so that my channel was created for Age of Empires, but that's beside the point. I don't know, but there's something about leading rather than following that appeals to me, especially in video games.
THIS WEEK ON SECONDS FROM DISASTER - 7th May 1963, the Great Surrey Train Crash How lack of corporate understanding lead to the worst rail disaster in British history (I'm sorry, but I had to do that!)
My god man, you need to learn to build track intersections - the one coming out of north London is abysmal! You did much better work with the T junction to Birmingham. OpenTTD supports such beautiful intersections that it's a damn shame not to build more of them.
Damn, when you built that railway from Bude to Brighton you really went F you to the countryside.. "Im gonna build some tracks so you better flatten yourself and get bulldozed bitch".. So much destruction just to place some tracks.
I say you should slap random signals and branch-offs everywhere. You are bound to get it right somewhere. That is, until you learn how it actually works in doing so.

I wish this was a little slower and had commentary, at least for a quick 5 minute episode; because I have no idea what's going on.

Original TTD deluxe had the UK map with like already-built AI companies etc. It was hard as hell at that time..
would definitely love to know what is the name of the song used for this video. tried to look it up on incompetech but couldnt find anything.
this is so calming
What is this music?! It's so beautiful!!
Could be fun if you could comment some on why you like the game and so on. Open TTD is and will always be my favorite game!
where did you get the uk map from?
Looks like Mr.Grey has already spent some significant amount of time playing this game.

One does not simply call himself CGPGrey2 .......
