One thing i'd highly recommand packing for any king of trip but even more for a backpacking trip is a tote bag: super convient to take your stuff with you when you go showering and the floor is wet so you can hang everything. Also super convenient to carry anything when you need a little extra space (eg for food) and once folded it takes so little space. Also, a fan if you're travelling in older trains/buses without ac
Yes I always bring a tote bag for grocery store and quick things. And also recently for trips I’ve started bringing a foldable backpack for a day bag as well. A fan is a great idea as well. Thank you for sharing!
Ya but I worry those aren’t as comfy as the one I have. Regular neck pillows are always uncomfortable for me. I am interested in trying the TRTL travel neck pillow. I’ve heard some good things and that one can pack small
@@RoamwithRach turtl was a game changer for me (frequent long haul traveler), but other people I know hated it, I think it really depends on the person.
Ah interesting!! I’m glad you’re one of the lucky ones who it works for. It’s so nice when you find a product you love! I feel like that’s why I haven’t bought it yet because I’m worried it won’t work for me haha
Genius essential I always take now is a lightweight rechargeable UV 'steripen' to sterilise water. Also a handsize USB rechargeable fan, for comfort and to prevent the dreaded heat rash. Take utterly minimal clothing and hand wash yr sweaty clothes every day. Bring few metres of light cord and some lightweight stainless steel pegs with a tiny bottle of washing up liquid/bodywash that you can top up in accommodations.
I can highly recommend the Lily Cup Compact, it's a great menstrual cup - proper game changer as it folds down flat as goes into a tiny round travel case the size of a lip balm/mini vasaline tin. I've had mine for years & it's still going strong. It's so small to carry, that it just lives in my handbag all the time, just incase I'm ever surprised, lol.
Oh wow ok good to know! I also just posted a video last week talking about new travel sanitation products I found. One of a compact sanitizer that can fold up just like your lily cup compact. Thanks for sharing your tip🙂
Thank you! I’m so glad it was helpful. Omg I gotta try one everyone says they’re great and compact! I just worry my neck will hurt sitting to one side. Do you find your neck ever hurts?
sisssss, this was SO incredibly helpful thank you so much! Also omggg that camera and the travel bag look perf !! Would you recommend the two backpack life or do you think you could have gotten away with just the travel pack and a tote bag?
Hi!☺️ so glad it was helpful for you. Honestly for me I think I needed the two backpacks but if you think you just need one and a tote try it. The only issue with a tote is it might hurt to carry around on one shoulder? I liked having two bags that had padded shoulders as you’ll be doing lots of walking and having to carry them for long periods of time
@@RoamwithRach Ok! So good to know. I'll look for collapsible ones that can stuff away when need. Thank you for your review, I'm fully going to send it on the Eagle Creek pack - I'm super impressed by it out of all the ones I've looked at so far 😎
I found they weren’t irritating but because there’s a decent amount of weight in it sometimes my shoulders should get a little red mark on them haha! But overall found it pretty comfy
A tote bag will be MAJORLY inconvenient, it’s easy for people to steal from, hurts your shoulders, and you’ll always need one arm to hold it instead of both arms being free with a backpack (especially important if you’re looking at things in markets or doing a hike!). Also backpacks have lots of compartments that make finding things a lot easier
Hey Rachel, thanks for your video ! I'm preparing my backpacking trip for South East Asia and I was wondering what bug spray did you use ? Was it efficient for the mosquitos ? I've watched lots of videos stating a good quality mosquito spray is a must against dengue fever.
Hello! I got a good quality one from my travel clinic. The brand is "Care Plus". If you go to your local travel clinic they can chat with you about it. I just remember my nurse saying something about a certain percentage of deet/incaridin is what makes a mosquito spray good! I hope this helps :)
Ooo tree hugger/greeny that's not hairy 👋👍 How do you get on not using any plastic and recycling any waste while traveling? I really struggle, try to aim for under a foot ball worth of uncompressed rubbish a month at home. Often there is nothing that I can't upcycle, compost or deal with on site. My go fast, light weight gear is covered in PFAS and has a lot of synthetics in it (heavy rainfall jackets particular). SS containers get heavy if your carrying your house (tent) for the trip. Well I think I can save space with not needing as many period underwear and bikinis 🤣 Most of my trips are chasing animals in the hills, first one to Asia 😳😲 Might be a tiny bit different than the NZ bush
It depends on the country you go to! I’m not perfect but I try to bring my reusable water bottle when I can, eating at sit-down restaurants (no takeaway packaging), etc. it sounds like you’re doing great!

this was a great video, thanks so much for sharing! did you just come back from your trip, what months have you been traveling (to compare for the weather and heat :))
Thanks for watching! I was travelling January-April🙂 it was a great time to go as it was dry season. The only downside was northern Vietnam was a bit cold. But I had fun nonetheless! Everywhere else was beautiful weather.
Such a good video! The only thing I’m a little confused about is the leaf razor because TSA will not let me bring a safety razor in a carry on. Did you check your bag with the razor or did you have any problems?
Really? I have had no issues with it on many trips I’ve been on. The only place I had an issue is when I had a layover in Korea on my way home they took the blades out. But if I was travelling still it would have been easy to buy blades I guess 😋
Hi! Thanks for watching🙂 I was in North Vietnam in February. It’s definitely warmer there in the summer months. However, if you’re backpacking Southeast Asia the summer, that is their raining season so be aware of that. That’s why I chose to backpack Jan-April
@@RoamwithRach Thanks a lot for your quick answer! 😊 We are going in March/April, so I was wondering how much long trousers and warm clothes do I need...
@KristynaU you’re going to have so much fun! Yes maybe bring a pair or two of pants and sweaters. You can always buy some jackets there if needed like I did. They have cool “made in Vietnam” stores with active outdoor clothes

You’re welcome! My one tip for that is to get smaller ones than you think. I accidentally bought a large one and it’s way too big. The small-er ones are good as you can separate shirts/pants/etc into different ones which is nice and make it very compact

I filmed a packing video for this trip where I try everything on. You can find it in my Southeast Asia playlist on my channel. Hope this helps! Let me know if you can’t find it and I can send you the link🙂
No they don’t! I’ll put nipple covers on if I feel like it. I got reusable nipple covers from “nippy”. For my tank tops I get them from dynamite, aritzia, and I really like this environmental company called “AYM”
I haven’t used wax ones before but I liked the loop earplugs! They have different sizes which helps with the fit. Usually the sound is just muted but it definitely helps a bit when a hostel is super noisy
How big can I push it with backpack size for carry-on? Also, can I bring two bags in Southeast Asian airlines? I have a camera backpack that is non-negotiable but because of that I need to have a second bag for clothes and other stuff. I'm deciding whether to get a duffel bag or a backpack that turns to a briefcase carry as my second bag. Thanks!
Hi! You’d have to check the rules on the airline website but for backpacks I’ve never had an issue with 40L or under. On some flights I see people bringing small duffel bags as their carry on item. You’re typically allowed on most flights to have one personal item and one carry on item. But each airline is different with their rules. Hope that helps🙂
Heyy you said the Canadian Airport took some cosmetics- I was wondering what exactly they took and why cause I'm going to SEA for 6 months and plan on bringing many doubles of my favorite (expensive) cosmetics and toiletries and want to avoid having to give them up at the airport...
All my bottles of liquids were under 100mL.. but you also need to be able to fit all your liquids into a tiny plastic bag that the airport gives you. So it’s not specific things they took it’s more like they took extras of things because I couldn’t fit it all in their plastic bag! So try to only bring doubles (I was silly and brought like triples of some things cause I didn’t want to run out LOL!)
My fav tank tops you don’t have to wear a bra with are from a sustainable UK company called “AYM”. Other ones are just regular tank tops that aren’t see through so for me that means I’m good!
