Dave, you are the greatest. The Blackhawks are my hockey team and to see them on your channel playing at old Chicago Stadium is great! Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita were the guys on those teams during this era. All that is missing is to see my Mets and Knicks on your channel.
@JerseyGrove I was born in the early 80’s. Grew up a Giants fan cause of LT, Mets cause of Doc and Daryl and the Knicks cause of their hard nose defense of the late 80’s and 90’s. Hockey there was one player that I liked growing up. Jeremy Roenick. I started reading up on their history and loved them from their on out and have always been a fan of them. Passed that love of all my favorite teams now to my daughter who is a HUGE Conner Bedard fan now.
This one is sending chills up my spine Dave! I grew up in Chicago. Spent many Saturday nights watching Blackhawks games with my Dad on WGN-TV. Many happy memories, names I know very well. Mikita, Hull, Warrham, Stapleton, Macki, Pit Martin.
Awesome video. Brett Hull was at this game as a 3 yr old. Cool interview with Bobby's wife in between periods. Yeah...they might have a future hockey player there!
This is really cool! The combination of the broadcast being in color and your revitalization of it makes this so immersive and REAL. These are players i've only heard about and seen short clips in b&w so the color is like looking at them in a whole different way. I know their uniforms haven't changed too much but the way the uniforms are cut and the (seemingly) larger logos and no name on back makes them look even more iconic and cool. Great job with this video Dave!
Dave, i comment Regularly on Football Stuff, mostly Steelers ' cuz im from Steeltown. My parents wouldnt let me play Football ( too rough!) But our locall mall had an ice rink.....so i conned them into letting me play hockey. Played thru All the Penguin Failures until Lemieux came to town. By that time , out of College, played Scrimmage hockey at Penguin Practice Facility, i could tell you stories! Anyway, i played goal, and was a huge fan of the full Fiberglass Facemask.....i build all kinds even to this day....people collect them. I cant believe as late as 1968 both goalies were Maskless. Also, i did attend in Person Andy Browns last NHL game as a Maskless Goalie.....he may have played further in the WHA. .. Thanks for the share.😉
Great-looking enhancement, Dave! I'm a casual, "doesn't really get into hockey until the playoffs" fan, but I'm enough of a sports-history buff to enjoy this. Plus, commercials from 1968! And anyone who liked "Wayne's World" can appreciate seeing Stan Mikita footage.
This is amazing!! The Leafs, in color. Stunning visuals. Chilling to hear JoAnne Hull's comments during the second period intermission, talking about her husband being ganged up on, given Hull's legacy of abuse toward her. This game must have taken place shortly after the Mahovlich trade.
thank you mister volsky! quebec city was mentioned for the philadelphia flyers because their own arena, called the spectrum, had a serious roof accident that ruined the building. the flyers had to play some home games in quebec, and also madison square garden!
Anyone else noticed that when the announcer said Minnesota played Philadelphia in Quebec City, you can faintly hear someone in the background say "Why?" 😄😆😆😆😆😆
What happened was that the Roof at The Wachovia Spectrum (the name of The Spectrum as of the time of its official closure, October 2009) suffered damage. The Flyers, who would make the playoffs, had to play the last month of the Regular Season in Quebec City at Le Colisee. The date of the Flyers first game back at the spectrum for the 1968 playoffs? April 4th. The face off to open the playoff game against St Louis, happened at the same time MLK was Shot and Killed in Memphis. As for the impact of the King Assassination (and riots that followed) on the 1968 Stanley Cup Playoffs, every series had to delay one game as a result of the Assassination/Riots and their aftermath, with the exception of the Habs-Bruins, as their April 6th game went on as originally scheduled.
1:00 (wikipedia) On March 1, 1968, wind blew part of the covering off the Spectrum's roof during a performance of the Ice Capades, forcing the building to close for a month ... The Flyers hurriedly moved their next home game against the Oakland Seals to Madison Square Garden in New York followed by a meeting with the Boston Bruins played at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto before establishing a base at Le Colisée in Quebec City, home of their top minor league team, the AHL Quebec Aces, for the remainder of their regular season... The roof was repaired in time to permit the Flyers to return to the Spectrum to open their first Stanley Cup playoffs against the St. Louis Blues on April 4, 1968
The matchups impacted were: Rangers-Blackhawks (was originally set for April 6, then delayed to April 9) Blues-Flyers North Stars-Kings. Blues-Flyers and North Stars-Kings postponements were game 3’s, while the Rangers-Blackhawks was a game 2, and were pushed to the Evenings of April 9th/10th, the games on the 9th occurred in the evening, most likely after the MLK Funeral.
Delays in the playoffs for ANY reason are more severe headaches to work around in terms of getting the games rescheduled compared to the regular season, with all the added media coverage and attention needed for the playoffs. In addition the delays may impact other events at the same venue. In those cases, how much the teams control anything will vary, because the league will have to work with the local authorities and manage logistics with the schedules and who has the higher priority in their arena, which for the playoffs, fortunately for the teams, unless you’re sharing with the NBA, are going to be in favor of the NHL teams. Now, at the time, the North Stars and Habs were the two playoff cities that DID NOT have an NBA team (Montreal is the only one of them to NOT have an NBA team to this day). As for the others? Los Angeles made both Chicago made both but The Bulls were out before the Stanley Cup Playoffs started New York made both but the Knicks were out before the Stanley Cup Playoffs started Boston made both Philly made both St Louis made both, but the Hawks played at a different arena, compared to the Blues. Of note, this was the LAST season of the St Louis Hawks before they flew South to Atlanta. So Philly, Boston, and Los Angeles had to deal with Logistical issues as well with their scheduling, which, for Philly and Los Angeles, was a new situation for them.
If one wants to know the Flyers record in the 5 games at Le Colisee, they went 3-1-1 (Beat Minnesota, Toronto and St. Louis, Tied Los Angeles, and lost to cross state rival Pittsburgh) As for Quebec City? Well, the city didn’t see professional hockey again until the World Hockey Association was formed in 1972, with one of their teams in Québec City, named the Nordiques. The Nords would be one of the the four WHA Teams that merged into the NHL in 1979 (Along with Edmonton Oilers , Winnipeg Jets and the New England Whalers (Renamed to HARTFORD Whalers at the request of the Bruins). The Nordiques would play in Quebec City in the NHL until 1995, when they moved to Colorado and became the Avalanche. Quebec City is still waiting for a possible team, but is a major stronghold of Canadian Junior Hockey; The Remparts have a strong following in the area, and they now play at the Videotron Centre. Everyone pretty much knows what happened to the Flyers, they need NO further explanation. The Leafs and Blackhawks Don’t play a big role afterwards other than that they’re the featured teams in this game; Toronto STILL hasn’t won a championship since 1967, while the Blackhawks would eventually win three Stanley Cups between 2010 and 2015 (09-10, 13, 14-15). And as for Chicago Stadium, the venue stayed in use for the Blackhawks, and the Bulls for that matter, until the end of the 1993-1994 season. The two now play next door at the United Center.
Wow a colour game rom '68! I just remember watching the Leafs on our black and white set in Toronto. Even the old Hockey Night in Canada tapes seem to be in black and white,
Thanks very much for posting - it looks great for it's age. It's nice to finally see this, as us poor schlubs who lived in Chicago at the time would not have been able to watch the telecast thanks to short-sighted Arthur Wirtz blacking out all the home games.
10 future hall of famers played in that game. Pit Martin who scored the empty netter was who Billy Reay traded Phil Esposito for and had to live down the notoriety of watching Espo become the huge record setting scorer with the Bruins.
It feels weird to see the ice, the boards, even the entire arena devoid of advertisements. Everything is so clean and no frills. It makes it much easier to follow the action.
Good upload Dave (as usual), the Blackhawks are my favorite team can you upload the Chicago Blackhawks Team of the Decade of the 2010’s uploads of each Stanley Cup series 2010, 2013 & 2015 also the 2014 Western Conference Finals LA Kings at Chicago Blackhawks game clinching game in overtime (LA won)
Dave, are there particular games you’re looking for? I have a massive catalog of games from NBA, NFL, NCAAB, etc. 1980s/90s. I would love to donate a few & see you work your magic. Let me know
Hi Johnny - I'm not necessarily looking for any particular games. I have interest in NFL or MLB up through 1989. I have a ton of NFL already. I only work with sources that are from first-gen DVD collector files (no internet downloads) and I'd need the files to be uploaded so I can download them, as I don't work with physical discs. If you'd like to discuss further you can email me at davevolsky@gmail.com. Thanks.
I was born exactly 4 years and 3 days after this game but I would gladly go back to this NHL as opposed to Gary Bettman's NHL. No Arizona Coyotes, no Vegas Golden Knights, or teams in non-hockey environments. And no advertisements on the ice, boards, helmets, or jerseys.
He played 24 years in the NHL,won four Stanley cups, 7 time all star, 1445 career regular season games, 126 career playoff games and is in the hall of fame but sure he’s known for coffee.

The play by play announcer for this CBS NHL telecast was Stu Nahan, commentator on the Rocky movies.
And a great cameo in Fast Times!!

Dave, it is so cool that you have found other classic sports to upload. Still love the old NFL though.

Those Blackhawk Jerseys, So Great
As usual this is great work, Dave. I best remember the NHL on CBS I believe on Sunday afternoons with the great Dan Kelly on play by play!!!
Dave.., three words : more please sir! Blackhawks preferably lol. The commercials❤️the enhancement❤❤❤❤

Jim Gordon is doing color. He was the Rangers play by play announcer for years, also did NY Giants radio play by play for years.
The Leaf crests on the jerseys faded so much more than the numbers that you can even notice in the distance shots.
The Oldsmobile commercial is GOLD!
This is fantastic Dave!! - Thank you.
Fabulous picture quality! Thank you for your efforts in getting this out there.
Such a great job Dave. From what I’ve seen this is the oldest color tv broadcast out there. You made it even better

Every time B Hull touches the puck the crowd gets excited.

Amazing find! Do you have access to any more CBS telecasts?
This is quite remarkable. It's like an oil painting come to life! And it's hockey!
The quality of this is really good and it's in color.
Great job, Bower at 43 👏
In WWII. Don’t make them like that anymore.

Chicago Stadium still having a manual clock in 1968…
Looks fabulous, and no helmets!, real hombres!
Great job, more games like this.

At 39:33 the announcer made an error mentioning Ken Dryden, he never played for the Hawks, it was his older brother Dave who was a Hawks goaltender.
I caught that, too. I wonder if the announcer followed NCAA hockey. Ken was playing for Cornell at the time.
No helmets those guys got balls of steel
30 days before I was born.
No Helmets, no goalie masks, no teeth---- Man these guys had to be tough as nails!
Or nuts lol
@@butchcoolidge4448 made of steel!
wow this is great
Brave goalies. Are helmets still optional?
Players got bigger over the years making the ice smaller

Leafs cup drought began in 1968 😅
Crazy that the goalies don’t wear masks
No kidding.
The Leafs were defending Stanley Cup champions when this was played!
1967 was their last cup and their last Cup final. Also the first season of the first NHL expansion
And we haven't said that since.

have u been to a vegas game.? they are knowledgable and love their team.
Also back then there were no annoying goal horns, sometimes being mistaken for the horns underneath the scoreboards to signify the end of the period .
Are they talking about the Tim Horton playing for the Leafs? He did better with the coffee shops
He played 24 years in the NHL,won four Stanley cups, 7 time all star, 1445 career regular season games, 126 career playoff games and is in the hall of fame but sure he’s known for coffee.
It’s like saying that Joe DiMaggio is only known as Mr Coffee
Love how the old heads talk about how tough the game was back the day then you watch this and it's basically flag football.
