Knew that trick already, but it's a great tutorial for those who don't.
DCS really needs that AB detent option. Even US Navy Fighters had that back in 1994, when calibrating the stick it asked for min, mil and max. Also, we can modify only 3 boundaries, one of which is the deadzone, the other two being the saturation values. I desparately need the fourth one which is missing in some planes, and I've just managed to get around this culprit by having the throttle axes mapped 1:1 in reverse on a virtual stick (vJoy + UJR) and use those instead of the WH axes when I need it the other way round. Could be much easier if DCS had all the options and not just some...
Yeah it's not ideal, maybe with MAC we'll see some ease of use features come in.
For years later and still doing the community a service. First and only video ive seen on this topic and its something most new players (like myself) dont even realize is an issue.
Good to see you back! This is now on my to do list.
I ended up finding mine from trial and error back in the FC2 days. If I recall correctly 22 was where the line is, but that would make the throttle start the burners half the time I was on the detent so I pushed it to 23 or 24. I may be remembering a different setting, though. But those days are long past me, these days I got a throttle with a movable detent. No longer do I have to modulate multiple afterburner stages my final 10% of throttle travel. I also did kinked line method shown here for a while, calculator comes in handy to get the numbers. Also, sliders affect the curve both at and around the setting and so modifying the next and previous numbers by one or two can dramatically improve the result. I've since moved on to an actual curve. There are some parts of the throttle you almost never use and so giving them less space over the important areas was great. But using the previous numbers as a guide and making very slight tweaks is critical there.
In an ideal world I'd like the Falcon 4.0 AB setting too. Though I'd personally make it split the curve into two parts, and give the same adjustment settings in game right now for either side. That way you can have a complex curve pre-afterburner and a linear curve through the burner for example, or a deadzone between mil and burner, or even a curve through the burner to make stage 1 easier to hit with large detents. I've thought about it for a while in the past, it seems to be ideal both for casual users and for those wanting far more control than we get even today.
Thank you! Although my Warthog was set up properly by default in DCS, the mention of filing down the physical detent is pure gold! I always hated to lift it into AB, but after a 5 min work it passes the detent with a light extra push.
F/A-18C : 0 5 10 16 22 32 43 56 70 85 100
F-14B : 0 2 5 10 20 31 43 57 71 85 100
These work fine on my warthog
Is there anyone having this serie for F-15C please ?
That was way off my Warthog's curve. I was half way over the push through before my afterburners kicked in with those figures. .
@@pestexuk Strange, it correspond perfectly with my new Warthog
@@zobbyirre8743 Sorry I haven't the F-15C
@@romainv.2683 I have the Hornet. It must be stomething to do with the dedent itself. I filed my original and it works flawlessly. I've had my Warthog for a few years now so I don't know if there's a slight difference in the detent itself. Saying that I have filed a slight curve on the detent to make it smoother: ruclips.net/video/4ZPV7n7OmoY/видео.html
as usual your guides are some of the best out there.
thankyou
Ive been looking for something like this for years after flying bms and setting the detent with a click of a button. Thank you so much.
thank you so much! the tip of filing down the detent to push through is so much better omg!
I got some 3D-printed part, matching the sweet-spot at which afterburner kicks in. Works great. But would now prefer doing it your way, if I had the choice again.
Great video, will definitely watch it again, if my custom detent got used up.
I have been wanting something like this for DCS, I wish I had found this tutorial earlier. I am going to use this as soon as I can. Thank you.
Great stuff! Was so surprised for such a long time that the info on this was rather minimal. For me a good detent is quite fundamental for an accurate and immersive sim experience. I only adjusted the general curve settings with the unavoidable loss of accuracy. There is a dcs forum link with suggested curves for most of the jet planes.
And the Falcon option should be incorporated in dcs.
Nice to make the subject of curves so clear! Thanks!
Me too! to the point that if a throttle doesn't have a detent it's a much harder sell for me.
RedKite exactly! I’m sometimes really surprised to see a detend missing on certain really high end throttles (verpil for example)...
Yes, whilst i love their designs that lacking detent hurts. The model one had it, but it wore out quickly so they removed the mechanism. Hope they'l re-introduce something in a new model.
What link, plse. Do you have it ?
IRRE Zobby hello, i’ve found the link. These are however restricted for the Warthog only. They work remarkably well! Hope it is of use for you.
Thank you, your custom curve numbers work pretty well for the F14 and F16 with little adjustment
Thank you! your doing some good stuff, im brand new to flight sim and trying to learn the f/a-18 and your video really helps.
Wish I found this when I flew the MiG-29 more, before I bought full fidelity modules. The 29's throttle setup is a nightmare. I appreciate the tutorial this can be applied to more than just throttles, I honestly never really fully understood how to tweak curves and which side was 100-0 and vice versa.
Thank you for your dedication and hard work RedKite. You're able to teach someone as thick as me. That my friend is no easy feat so kudos to you my friend.
Very very helpful! Thank you very much! Great video as always!! :)
To find where the afterburner kicks in use ctrl + enter to bring up in game controls. You can see where the afterburner will kick in.
Doesn't work on all modules.
Welcome back RedKite. Hope you're doing well
Cool trick with flipping the idle detent! I'll have to give that a try
Thanks for the tutorial.
You should make some Falcon BMS videos!
Thank you i have always kinda wondered how to tweak this to match, but never took the time to figure it out.. great explanation!!
Still relevant, thank you for this video.
Nice professional presentation 👍. Well done Sir.
Nice one RedKite!!! Will try this later. It's nice to see you back!!! :)
Hey thanks! Figured i'd ease myself back in with a general tutorial, whilst taking advantage of the new night lighting!
@@RedKiteRender Oh yes! I liked the new update, although some colours seem to be over saturated for my taste but overall, it looks better and it feels smoother. Definitely looking forward to your next tutorials, as I have a lot to catch up too, couldn't fly for a long time as my computer was broken. Very happy to see you back and looking forward to 2020 in DCS!
Nice, I've been playing around with using a button on the throttle as the afterburner latch on the F16, seems to be quite intuitive so far.
Works great as a workaround for those without a physical detent on their controller.
Good tip with filing it down, I wasn't aware of that idea :D That will make it smoother/faster to engage AB when I require it. Thanks.
Just be careful doing it, better to take off too little than too much, and insure it's a ramp for the throttle to ride up over. If you mess it up, you can order 3d printed replacements pre-cut as push through detents.
@@RedKiteRender Where from?
Great tutorial, very easy and very helpfull!
Thank you very much Sir!
Definitively a must see! Thank you so much
Welcome Back Redkite!
Seems like it would be reasonable for ED to implement a "Set Afterburner Start Position" option to make it simpler.
Good tutorial, as usual.
I have perfeclty calibrated Warthog and these are my inputs fo F-16. I also used fuel flow gauge for it:
0 6 13 20 31 42 53 65 76 88 100
Do you plse have it for F-15C ?
Follow the guide in this video and you can configure it for yourself, this method works for all modules.
You can also just use curvature (for me 8 is best), it induces a slight non-linearity along the whole curve, but after having a bit of time to get comfortable, I have no issues with it.
Can't believe I'm only just seeing this and only because someone on the ED forums linked it. Been searching for a good tutorial to help tame my old, kanckered TM Cougar TQS for quite literally, months.
As an aside, I note there's now a "join" button adjacent to the subscribe button. I'll hazard a guess that's why I've not seen this (or anything else from you) since before lockdown started...?
The 'Join' button has been around for a few years now, in fact my channel was chosen as one of the early adopters to test the system before youtube wide activation! Although platform adoption of the feature such as on mobile/certain browsers has been very slow. No videos are held behind a paywall or anything like that.
The lack of content is rather sadly due to the lockdown, I lost my job and was forced to move out, throwing my life up in the air along with significant mental stress. Sadly i'm sure you can understand that has meant youtube was forced onto the sidelines and I've been unable to produce videos lately. Been a pretty crap year all things considered. I'm finally getting myself back into a position to work on yt again, with a couple videos in various states of completion that were held up over the last few months.
@@RedKiteRender oh god, so sorry! My comment wasn't made as a criticism. I massively admire the videos you make as they're clear, concise and well made, streets ahead of most anyone elses and YT can be a total arsekicker in the comments.
I sincerely hope things improve for you soon, chap as you're definitely a good guy :)
Stay safe!
I didn't mean it to sound defensive or the like, just over-explaining things as i often seem to do! No worries, just a stressful week.
thanks man oooh finally I managed to make the accelerator work xD
ED, Please add an AB set option! So many years. This is a rather large issue and would be an ideal priority. Thanks!
I've seen your logo and I recommend that you look at the star citizen: Talon game ship. You will like.
The f/a-18 already has a dedicated command for the detent which is super handy
It's great if you've not got a detent on your physical throttle and have a button spare.
Fantastic job....
Thank you for such a interresting video...
:-)
From Brussels, with Love...
Neat trick, thanks!
This is definitely a video that will help out a lot of people thanks for making it Redkite
Thanks for sharing. Most helpful. 👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃
Burn Baby Burn!!!
My T16000M does not have an AB detent.
I just go full AB, wait for speed, instantly take back the throttle and use the ATC (autothrottle / Key: "T") to make my Hornet give 100% thrust without afterburner. So it is always trying to hit the AB speed but will never use AB. And when I move the throttle it goes into manual mode again. Works out for me.
Please do more videos!
More videos are in the pipeline, the virus and unemployment have been playing havoc with my life recently
@@RedKiteRender Tnx, dude! You are the best video marker in DCS! Thats why i want moore! Ofc i understand if u have some up coming problem with this corona stuff.. Keep up! We all know u are the best!
I love DCS
I needed this~!~~~
It’s unforgivable that they haven’t coded a better way to handle this. I.e. mark zero throttle, mark at detent and mark at full zone 5.
DCS really needs a AB setup option like BMS.
Thankfully, some HOTAS have a work around with the included software. I know WinWing does. Wish TM did.
My Warthog throttle has now been relegated to just the A-10.
I love the AB on/off switch on the JF-17 🥺
Mirage and a few others (i think) have a similar switch, some also have an afterburner finger lift button that can be enabled in the special options.
Now that you're back, will you be resuming your guides on the JF-17 in the coming months? I never know if when I'm having issues, they are my fault, a bug in the sim, or a limitation of the airplane
Well they finally add it to the viper, but now we have the f15e, something they could do it fairly easy but ED likes to see us beg for something, that is getting old, the F-15E AB engage almost at 70% or 75% (in my x56) of the throttle and thats nuts, i have tried everything but sometimes the compromise is so big, when refueling if you make these manual adjustments the throttle resolution gets way sensitive to fly in formation, man ED team is smaller than my family of 5 humans, feels like they don't want to expand the team and have smaller salaries..i dont know what it is but for a Sim with this price tag these updates should be in weeks, .. for each module or big update we have to wait sometimes 1 year, its nuts
The best ! Thanks
I honestly wish DCS adopted the BMS solution where you could just move your throttle to the detent position and then literally just click a button to set that as your limit for mil-power.
Yes, it would be so much easier and user friendly to have that option too. I'm hoping MAC will bring in some ease of access features like that over to dcs.
you can adjust the curvature. At least for the F-18 with a warthog, a value of 5 will give you almost the identical result...
Nice, thanks!
Thanks for this Mr Kite. Can you give an indication of how much you filed down/ reshaped your warthog detents so that you can push the throttle through (and back?) without having to lift them. Its because you have to lift over the AB detent that I haven't changed mine. Thanks.
If you give it a firm push, without holding it down, you can press over the detent.
@@marioschmitt4435 Thanks. I'll give that a try. I'm sure on a video about setting the detents it said you had to lift them, but I'll give it a try all the same.
Phantom453 There is a file out there, CAD-data for a custom detent. 3D printable by most services. Just don't remember the URL. Cost me a few bucks, but works fine without turning the axis. It's designed to be pushed over smoothly.
That's my detent

@@RedKiteRender Thank you!
Perfect!
RedKite, let us know how you are doing bud! Cheers!
Hey still alive, working hard on something cool for hopefully today/tomorrow!
I am putting my Warthog throttle in full afterburner/full forward passed the detent, but the F/A-18 in DCS doesn't go into afterburner.
Can i do this with a logitech extreme 3 pro? If not how about the t16000m theottle?
same question, I have doubts as many said that having this a simple slider and no finger lifts etc something cannot be done , but I just have no idea being a newbie.
RedKite, I'm sorry for asking you in the comments of an unrelated video, but I'm really struggling. Does the litening pod on the Harrier feature laser yet? I know in your 2017 video it didn't, I can't get an answer on the forums. I have ran through practice missions for hours trying it but the bomb never tracks, thanx.
2 years later ... has anything changed since this video? :)
Nope, sadly not.
In the Hornet the aferburner sounds kicks in before any flames are visible. So where does it really start? With the animation or sound?
If in doubt you can use the fuel flow, normally what'l happen is the flames appear later because they take a moment to ignite once you've reached the AB segment, which is why i suggest moving slowly on the throttle so you don't get caught out with the engine response lag.
Great video, thank you for the guide! Can you by any chance take a high resolution picture to show us how to file down the afterburner detent piece on the Warthog Throttle so we get the same results as you?
It's mostly just a process of file some off, test, repeat until you're personally happy with the results. Side with taking too little off since you can't add back material.
This is a great video example of a filed detent, although it is more filed down than mine is. ruclips.net/video/4ZPV7n7OmoY/видео.html
@@RedKiteRender Thank you very much!
Everyone has done a first impression. Could you please do a setup of the WinWing Joystick and Throttle Bindings and setup for in game use for the F18C.
There is no setup, it has default bindings built into the game.
@@RedKiteRender Can you tell me how to find those default settings I'm truly lost.
@@jonahe2950 Just reset the device's controls to default inside dcs. Alternatively the WW App should also be able to set the controls for you.
I just wonder... the latch isn't lifted and the in game throttle is stuck just a bit after the AB detent. Joystickthrottle curves however show that it still moves past AB! But the in game throttle wont move past! I am so fed up with this AB setting junk.
finally!
Excellent tutorial. Redkite, do you know if they have fixed the steerpoint bug with the TGP ?
Steerpoint bug? you mean overwriting the steerpoint location with the tgp? No that,s still an issue, they need to implement CZ cursor zero functionality.
RedKite Thanks. After your video, I have immersed myself in BMS and it is truly a first class simulation of the F16. DCS can only dream of achieving its level of sophistication. It is actually quite frustrating using the DCS F16 after the using the BMS F16.
Can you use the split throttle on a Warthog hotas in the Harrier? I mean use one as the throttle and the other as the nozzle degree control?
Yep, that's what i do, use the left for nozzle.
@@RedKiteRender Ok great, and the same method should work for the stops on the nozzle as the afterburner then. Thank you.
Can you set this also if you have a one throttle and you are doing this on a double engine module? Like the Tm16000 throttle on the F18? Or not?
thanks
Of course, just bind your control to 'throttle' which controls both together, then adjust the curve.
@@RedKiteRender thanks for the reply. But to do this I think I will need to fly a little bit to understand something.
I could also maybe design on that throttle the lines of each position for more realism and to have a reference however i dnt think it will br accurate. This at least until I get a winwing f18 reproduction
Now i need to setup my 3d printer.
Can someone please tell me how to chop the top end of the throttle off so I dont have to use the detent at all in the harrier? I find VTOL take off and landing almost impossible with the detent and I have plenty of travel before the detent
Warthog? unscrew the little bit between the two throttles, and at the front you've got the detent, just pull it out, flip it to face the other way, should disable the detent.
@@RedKiteRender Ooh no sorry, what I meant was; How do I set a custom curve in order to not use the detent and above section on the throttle.. I.E. Max throttle is reached upon reaching the detent, so that I dont have to cycle back and forth over th detent when trying to land in VTOL... I have an Orion HOTAS
@@flighttherapybullisticfpv133 Ah okay. You should try reducing the saturation down until it meets the detent, which is at about 75%? I think? That should give you what you're looking for.
Can we use curvature instead of the user curve to set it up? what is the advantage and disadvantage in that?
Issue with curvature is you delineate the throttle across the whole travel, i find that makes it harder to make adjustments in formation or air to air refuelling, you won't generally notice it outside of precision flying however. But also you can't choose a sharper or softer curve early on or after the afterburner setting. (Some aircraft like the Viggen for example it helps to adjust the multiple afterburner stages curve individually too)
@@RedKiteRender thanks for the reply, so i have mine actual afterburner point around 35 and physical mil power around 45. And I got confused as yours more closely to 20. What do you suggest me to do in this particular scenario because i found -7 curvature works perfectly
pls do a video about the Viggen
Unfortunately me and the Viggen don't get along the best I love the jet, but have difficulty with the computer. I might one day, but for now I've got other priorities.
what about enabling afterburner detents in the settings? Is that thing as useless as it sounds?
If enabled it will require you to press a button to simulate pulling the finger lifts in order to activate your afterburner. It's useful for anyone who doesn't have a detent on their physical throttle.
Thanks! But : That could've been made SO MUCH easier, like Falcon 4.
Yep, which is why i'd highlighted it, as a gentle nudge nudge hint hint to dcs. Now, if BMS could have DCS's controls binding screen for the rest of it that'd be awesome. (i use Alternative launcher instead of Falcon 4's old ui)
Unfortunately, on the thrustmaster T4, the detent is at 50%. Oof.
Frankly, it is easier to 3D print a dozen of those detents instead of filing down the stock one.
yep, thats what I did.
I need to get me one of them there fancy 3d printers.
I'm curious, where would you 3d print these parts ? Do you send the 3d model to a company that does it for you and you would have to wait a week before it arrives or do you have your own 3d printer in that case good for you but saying it is easier isn't really looking at the whole picture.
Why is 3d printing is easier than simply filing down the detent? I'm pretty sure for most people it certainly isn't.
@@notproplayer3649 I printed at a local 3d print workshop. Get the stl files at debolestis page. Google debolestis, you'll find him easily. He's on the forums too.
Filing down the detent is an easily fuckable up job and is irreversible. A dozen of those 3d printed inserts cost me about ten bucks. I can even file them individually without tweaking curves.
@@theeltea okay if you say so though I haven't got any workshops nears me, and I'm pretty sure you could find trigger detents on Ali express or sites like that, yes the shipping time is long but that's the last ressort if I end up fucking up my filling. And again I'm not really sure that a lot of people have got access to some sort of 3d impression.
Adjusting the kickdown linkage on my computer SMH
Is there an easier way for this now? jeez. lot of work for a simple task lol.
i dont get it,why not just leave it like it was?
Makes it easier to use full military power without afterburner to save fuel. If left as is, military power and the AB would both be after your physical detent, making it a little hard to accurately select which you want.
meanwhile falcon BMS have a fucking button called A/F SET, a 20 old sofware have this and DCS not have this
Jf17 tutorial?
This video applies to any dcs aircraft. If you’re wondering about the next JF-17 tutorial, i chose this topic to ease myself back in to making videos. I do have a JF-17 video on the way however.
And BMS still ahead
and old and still receiving updates :)
how do you set up the idle detent with the warthog?
the idle detent on the warthog is a button. in the modules keeybinding you find throttle idle. just bind it as usual any move your thottle into the cutoff position. it will register as a button press.at least on the F-14 it worked that way
Do you mean on your physical controller? i showed it in the first min, unscrew the cover between the throttles, remove the cover, pull out the detent piece and turn it the other way, place back in. You then have to pull up the finger lifts to pass over it unless you file it down like i have. Alternatively you could order a 3d printed push through detent.
@@RedKiteRender no I mean to get it properly functioning in DCS, specifically with the hornet. I have the afterburner detent set up and working great, that simple because its all the same curve. but I don't know how to get the idle detent working.
@@MattesSPunkt ok, I'll try that.
@Carl Groover Ah sorry mis-read your comment. you've got to lift the handles to pass into it. Then either pass in or out it'l output a button press (22 / 23 i think). Doesn't always catch it in dcs though. you can force it with the selection drop down if needed.
Huey multicrew, someone notice ..
Most people have noticed, it's just in such a rough state right now and not worth covering unless you're clamouring for views. A bit like the Hornet tgp slave modes which are fundamentally unusable right now.
