  • Today we have disassembled Jeff's 944 Turbo transmission and were going to show you how to use the 385 bar. Unfortunately we discovered that we are still missing 2 vital pieces. While we wait for those we are going to give you an overview on the condition of Jeff's transmission (hint: it isn't good) and an update on the shop. Thanks for watching!

Russ, looks like I need to order a new ring and pinion. I will check the Porsche parts catalogue to determine the correct part numbers for the 5R transaxle and get back to you to verify before ordering. I need to know what else I should order in terms of the existing shafts, gears and bearings. Email me what you think also needs to be replaced, - anything that looks suspicious. I want to do a good job on the rebuild. I have the gasket and seal kit, and have ordered a whole set of synchros. Back story on this transaxle is that I purchased it from an eBay vendor in California for my 1988 944 turbo that I am restoring. Purchased it in 2021 and it sat in my garage in its packaging until I sent it to you. I know nothing else about its history. I still have the original transaxle that came with the car, if other parts are needed that are NLA from Porsche, but I would rather get new replacement parts from Porsche rather than cannibalize the other transaxle.

Looks like the pinion bearing went away, think that's a common issue with 944 gear boxes, is there a crush spacer like 8", 9" Fords pinons?

There is no cruch sleeve. Just shims to create the correct depth and preload. You bring up a good point though, there is no force there to keep up with bearing wear.

I have a 924 with a whining noise in 4th gear (It's an early 4 speed) what would be the probable issue? All the other gears seem okay.

Probably wear in the bearing on the loose 4th gear causing it to not run true with it's counter part. Under load the gear could be tilted causing noise. Also, could be a pitted gear.
