If you want to know why Black Christmas 2019 turned out the way it did, you need only to look at its production history.
Originally, director and co-writer Sophia Takal wanted to do a remake of I Spit on Your Grave for Blumhouse. But they didn't have the rights, so they offered her Black Christmas. She accepted since she was a fan of the original, hoping to do for that film what Luca Guadagnino did for Suspiria (Trying to capture the visual look and feel that the remake had). Another thing she was trying to do was up the feminism, hoping to make her version more applicable to current-day issues (The character of Professor Gelson was a spoof on Jordan Peterson and Donald Trump, how it explores what fueled #Metoo, and the whole "not all men" comment). When asked about the "not all men" scene, she said this:
_"That, to me, is my favorite scene in the movie because it feels like so many arguments I’ve had with men in my life who are wonderful, great men. That’s an argument a lot of people get into._
_I think there’s validity to what he’s saying, too. It’s not productive to think of men as a monolith of bad people. The most productive conversations I have with men who might want to be allies but sometimes have blind spots, was to just approach it in an open way. You don’t want them to have their guard up, because then they can’t hear what we’re actually trying to say."_ - *Sophia Takal, How 'Black Christmas' Takes Dead Aim At The Patriarchy*
Current issues weren't the only target in her crosshairs. Supposedly, the opening dance number is a satire on Mean Girls, a film Takal didn't like.
Regarding filming, it was done in New Zealand over 27 days. Overall, the film took 6 months to complete, which would be half the time it would take for a normal picture. Once it was released, audiences and critics didn't like it at all. Criticism was aimed at how the film handled its feminist themes, with the biggest complaint being that it was "too preachy"; being about as subtle as a wrecking ball going through your living room. Other complaints were how flat and boring the cinematography was, with the film even copying other scenes from horror flicks (The jumpscare from Exorcist 3 being the most prominent). Finally, everyone was sceptical over the rating, with Takal trying to set the record straight:
_"Okay, the truth behind was that as we were writing the script we were talking the rating, and were unsure what the MPAA would end up coming down on._
_Not because of the violence or anything like that, but because of the topic and how I had at least heard that the MPAA is pretty conservative about what they allow in a PG-13 movie when it comes to female sexuality, and because sexual assault is a big part of the plot. We just weren’t sure where they would land."_ - *‘Black Christmas’: Sophia Takal Sets the Record Straight About the Film’s PG-13 Rating.*
Others have speculated that it was done to get more arses in seats, seeing as how the film will cut right before a graphic death occurs. All these flaws have culminated into something that's often regarded as one of the worst horror remakes out there, making it to the IMDB Bottom 100 as of this posting.
So what even was Blumhouse trying to accomplish with this remake? Well, a lot of folks who have reviewed this have compared it to Get Out: seeing as how both films tackle social issues. But what separates Get Out from Black Christmas 2019 is that it knew that "story is king", seeing as it didn't placate the message over its plot. However, Blumhouse didn't even learn this seeing as they've been trying and failing to replicate that success with works like The Craft: Legacy, They/Them, and Exorcist: Believer going down this well to negative results.
Takal hasn't done another film as of 2024, being relegated to television directing. Compare this to her husband (Lawrence Michael Levine), who has directed a couple of indie films, with Black Bear being his most recent. Granted, that film does have some issues, but I bring it up since it also delves into the whole "men vs women" aspect infinitely better and smarter than what Black Christmas 2019 tries & fails to do. I could recommend it for a one-time watch, or at least as a palette cleanser after watching that crappy remake.

My politics are as far left as can be. I’m working on a film myself that I consider very pro-feminism but Black Christmas 2019 is one of the worst films I ever paid money to see. I wanted to walk out of the theater the whole time. The idea of a killer frat coulda been cool but it’s nothing but terrible hit you over the head buzz-word-filled dialogue.

I actually saw a video about the Black Christmas remakes before Christmas. It was made by a trans RUclipsr and it's a pretty interesting and valuable perspective for movies with such dreadful gender politics.
When encountering those rare people who genuinely hate all men, it's kinda hard to speak up to that as a man, because you can't really make the case that it hurts your gender, just that it's bad and dumb in principle. But it genuinely hurts trans and nonbinary people because in order to act like certain genders are monoliths you kinda have to also act like people whose identity crosses the line separating them don't exist.
    EDIT: Channel's name is logan-ashley.

With the whole Clockwork Orange thing, regardless of whether that film did right or wrong, i feel like Adam is heavily biased towards prioritizing aesthetics (art) over ethics when in all honestly, real world impact is generally much more important than a movie’s aesthetic quality. Does it really matter that a certain movie was good if it was, for example, made under unethical or exploitative working conditions or through unethical or exploitative practices?

I have a lot of nostalgia for it, but even objectively, i'll defend Black X-mas (2006). I just rewatched it (and the original) over the holidays and it was actually better and more personally shocking than I remember it being in my early teens. It was sexualized, but not nearly to the degree that you guys are saying. I'm pretty sure there isn't even nudity besides the sextape part. It doesn't read as a "dumb bimbo" movie, and all the girls in it, even if their characters were generic, seemed smart and reacted quickly after realizing the situation they were in. The only "sexualization" I see in it is that they hired hot girls and put some of them in scanty clothing.
Back in 2006, and on rewatch, it's also genuinely scary in parts. When they reveal Agnes hunching over the girl in the bed is terrifying. You only know about Billy and are expecting to see him but you're met with a scary lady with bugged eyes being played by a man. It's jarring initially but even after Agnes is a scary character. I also like that it's campy/kitschy in an earnest way. The cookie-cutter flesh part is funny because you can tell that they meant for it to be gruesome but it's just absurd.
Also, the plothole of them thinking Billy is dead isn't a plothole. In one of the opening scenes at the psych ward the guards mention that the official story is that he's dead but they kept him in the ward in secret... which is also a funny dumb plot point.
I don't think it's amazing but it's fun for exactly what it is. I don't get how you can say you were bored or lost in such a simple, fun, dumb movie.

Since Adum keeps unironically bringing it up, the reason movies generally don’t have child murder is the same as why they generally don’t have the murder of domesticated animals: because almost everyone, not just parents, finds the killing of something docile and innocent repulsive in a non-engaging, gratuitous way that will, more than anything, make them raise an eyebrow at the people who made it in a “why did they put that in there?” sort of way. This is because we know from studies of people like John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, and the like that a lack of empathy for children and animals and an exhibitionism about it is strongly indicative of predatory mental illness which, especially now, is a vibe Hollywood is really trying to avoid. It’s exactly why we almost never see rape as a plot device in movies anymore; because people now recognize that, with rare exceptions, it’s just a surrogate for the filmmakers to exploit women. And maybe child murder in movies isn’t filmmakers projecting a want to KILL children, but your brain can probably fill in the gap of what it is. Hope this helps!😊

Good on you for having a sensible head on your shoulders. Unfortunately, there are always gonna be nutjobs out there that LOVE WATCHING kids, literally the most innocent among us, being butchered on screen. I seriously hope Adum is seeing a therapist or something
