The documentary didn't "cast doubt" on her ancestry as much as it destroyed her claims altogether.
Buffy St. Marie heritage has more in common to the girls from Jersey Shore than any indigenous community.

I agree. I went into it hoping to find flaws so that I could defend Buffy but the evidence was solid... and there was so much of it! Plus her son claimed on Facebook that Buffy is English and Italian, not Indigenous.

Shamefully one-sided "enquiry", exclusively based on the authors' prejudice, determined to produce a bombshell show and massive lynching reactions from the self righteous audience, whereas every single testimony in it could be seriously questioned. Not any other possible explanatory track is explored, behalf a talented artist's greed and fundamental hypocrisy. Such blatant badfaith in the daily use of modern MSM is just extremely worrying.

I’m gobsmacked by Buffy Saint Marie. My bff and I went to see her in concert in 1969 when we were 14, we were super early, so Buffy told security to let us in & watch her sound check. I happen to be Dark German and English, but I look extremely Indigenous, perhaps that’s why she let us in, but my friend is the whitest platinum blonde with blue eyes, so I think she was just being nice, she was so friendly with us. I’m in shock from watching The Fifth Estate program. I just always thought she was born on the Cree Rez in Saskatchewan like she said & adopted into a white family who raised her. I’m so disappointed in her sham, I can’t believe she treated her birth family so horribly, especially her brother Alan.😢

Also... her lie and blackmail about her brother is a betrayal of real molest victims everywhere. She screwed her relatives, she screwed Indigenous Canadians out grant money and awards, and she screwed her fans. And her dissing of other folk musicians in the folk era is simply irritating.
I think Buffy Ste-M told her lies for so long, she 100% believes them. Threatening her brother with accusations of paedophilia if he blabbed further telling the truth is what convinced me.
It wasn't just the threat, it's what she DIDN'T say in that letter. Someone who really thought she was Native American would have brought that up in the letter to him. But she didn't. She only threatened him, which made it clear that she was faking and he could expose her. Now that she won't take a DNA test, it proves 100% she's not Native American and a fraud.

Her threatening her brother is what convinced me that she is absolutely aware of how flimsy her story was, she had to go as far as to threaten her brother with something as egregious as sexual assault of a minor and of a sibling at that, for fear that her story would be exposed. If she truly believed her own lie, she would not feel so threatened by her brother telling the truth.
I don't think she 100% believes the lies. It's interesting to me to hear her tell one interviewer years ago that she AND her sister were BOTH adopted from the reservation. I think she made up that lie after her son and sister took DNA tests and proved they were related (which would not have happened if Beverly had been adopted into a white family). She continuously spins new lies to cover herself. She has continued to change her backstory through the years, from being Algonquin, to Mi'kmak, to Cree. She was adopted by the Piapots BECAUSE she lied about being an indigenous baby taken from Canada, and took advantage of the grief of a Piapot couple who had lost two daughters. NOW she says she never knew where she came from, but she knows who she is, and is falling back on this adulthood adoption into the Piapot family as "proof" that she's indigenous.
And that she waited until after his death to tell the world about his abuse when they were young. @@obcl8569

I am surprised by all these people who think DNA tests solve anything. Elizabeth Warren said she had Native ancestry. Trump and others known for their veracity called her Pocahontas and made fun of her. She took a DNA test, which, big surprise, revealed that she did in fact have Native (Cherokee) ancestry. Did this shut people up about this? Hell No, Trump still calls her Pocahontas even though she is not Powaton, which was Pochahontas' people, but Cherokee.
People then said, well, she didn't have much Cherokee blood. I got news for you,Cherokees have enrolled members who are 1/512 Cherokee on their rolls. Warren was much more than that. DNA shows only what people want it to show. I don't want to hear about DNA tests, I am a Biologist and know that people ignore DNA tests if they feel like it.
Native American DNA does not always show up on DNA tests. There are several reasons why this might be the case.
Inheritance patterns: DNA is inherited in specific patterns, and if Native American ancestry is not along the tester's direct maternal or direct paternal line, Y-DNA and mitochondrial DNA will be of no use in showing it.
Random inheritance: DNA is passed down randomly, so it is possible that someone with Native American ancestry may not inherit any DNA from their Native American ancestor.
Test accuracy: DNA tests may miss evidence of Indigenous American DNA, as they survey only a portion of a person's DNA.
Estimates: DNA testing companies provide ethnicity "estimates" based on their base samples, which are constantly undergoing updating as sciences improve. Thus, if someone has taken a DNA test and did not see Native American DNA, they may want to log back in and take a look around, as there may have been an update to their results.
It is important to note that even when test results do show Native ancestry, they rarely show tribal affiliation. Additionally, it is important to be clear about the differences between DNA, ancestry, and identity, especially when it comes to Indigenous American individuals and the sovereignties of Indigenous Nations. Misattributing an ancestor as Indigenous is also a possibility, as white settlers or their descendants sometimes did this to justify a more native-born “Americanness” or to absolve one’s family of blame for colonialism.

Some of the criticism is justified. She does this not for the good of the people but for fame and recognition. That being said, she did some good investigative work here.

There is a psychological problem here. Buffy got more attention and probably more work by creating an indigenous persona and backstory. It's sick but it happens and it worked for her for a long time.
Agreed. What Jacqueline Keeler and others are trying to do is quash anyone from trying to attempt to do the same thing. Indigeneity has gained popularity and created fascination -- to the point where those from other races (not just white, but South Asian such as the Gill twins) are hoping to gain from that. Whether it's to acquire financial alleviation or just personal clout, they're doing it by never experiencing the same hardships that actual Indigenous people do.
In fairness to Buffy, the moment she declared herself as Indigenous -- as an Indigenous-passing woman -- she invited the criticism and discrimination all on her own. Yet, her background allowed her to prepare for that. Back in the day, the Italians (which she was) were looked down upon. She made the choice to go forward as a more victimized race, than as someone who was looked down on. Drew Hayden Taylor's documentary "The Pretendians" explains why people do this. Mainly to feel special. In Buffy's case, she wouldn't have been special as an Italian. But then again, we'll never know.
Yeah, it's exactly the same thing with people who fake military service. They usually get unearned respect, fame, money or access from it. They also use the same excuses Buffy made to cover her lies- "records lost in a fire," "Records kept secret by the government, etc"

Yeah, it's the same as the epidemic (at least in America) with fake military veterans. And the fake veterans use the same lies to hide their tracks - "My records were lost in a fire," or "My records are so classified that I cannot prove my service." Both are lies of course because whether you are Native American or a Military Veteran, there are lots of other ways to prove it. The government keeps records in more than one location for both (pay or health records that are separate from other records, for instance). For Native American claims, there are live birth records, adoption records, immunization records, tribal records, government records, witnesses, etc. For veterans, pay records are always available and they are kept totally separate from the main military records. Also, there classified missions, but no military member is EVER classified themselves. That's a dead giveaway is someone ever tells you that that they never served or were kicked out of the military for misconduct.
My understanding is that there WAS a DNA test. Her niece and son both had their DNA tested and the results showed that they are blood relatives.
The notion that this is not newsworthy and shouldn't have been reported is laughable. This woman is world famous and her identity for decades is that she is a Canadian indigenous artist.

I'm from the U.S. and I follow Canadian and indigenous Native American/First Nations related news. I learned about this situation in the comments section on a video about an unrelated book. I quickly left that video to come look into this.
Almost no one in U.S. born in last 50 years has any idea who she is. I assume she is talented but doesn't excuse her lying. She should prove her claims with DNA test or admit she's not indigenous.

Saint Marie put out the Buffet and it was quite a Spread and a hard pill to swallow. Piapot was also quick to accept a Celebrity without really checking on her authenticity and ethnicity.

As a survivor of severe trauma, I can attest, unequivocally, that the worst thing one can do a victim/survivor is to continue to lie. There is a clinical term for such behavior: gaslighting.

No birth registry in the US issues new birth certificates for adopted foreign-born children. The fact that her birth certificate is numbered right in the middle of babies born in 1941 is very good evidence that she was, in fact, born in Massachusetts to ethnically Italian Americans. Go look up Grey Owl and Iron Eyes Cody.

I doubt if Buffy would ever agree to a DNA test: it will only happen if she is legally compelled. She is currently playing the "victim" - calling the "allegations" "deeply hurtful." Hallmark narcissism which to me she should be prosecuted for in a court of law. It is disgusting what she has said and done to the indigenous people and to her own family. Thank you Jacqueline for bringing this to light. Buffy would have gone to her grave with her lies and she would have gotten away with it. AS hard as this revelation is to me, the evidence is indisputable. The damage Buffy did to her birth family is unconscionable. The damage done to her Piapot adopted family is unconscionable. But Buffy must keep the lies up because that is what she is - a liar. So sad. I can only have compassion for her.
I think the worst part was when Buffy sent a letter to her family from her high priced lawyers threatening to destroy them and put forward sexual abuse allegations if they didn't stop giving interviews, etc.

All investigators need to do is get the DNA. Pretendian call themselves investigators without going in specifically to get the DNA and puffing out hours of turned off comments material, without any evidence. Investigators acquire the 100% scientific proof before failing so badly at claiming to be investigators.

When METL was exposed I was raging angry, Carrie Bourassa embarrassing, but Beverly (am I dead naming? Too bad) just gutted me. But all the emotions, it is not about us being fooled. It is all on Buffy. Maybe she has a sense of release from her lies. Her Canadian awards should be returned just as METL returned hers.
What a gift for her to be able to reconcile with her ancestors at 80 years old. She may have never had the chance if she wasn't called out in her lifetime.

I'm not aboriginal but am very disappointed that this well known entertainer and "Aboriginal" advocate would pull such a scam on this community. Good for putting this info up. Around where i live there are different reservations, and some you can immediately tell are Native. and some have mixed with other nationalities. There is so much information available now, that wouldn't have always been at our fingertips - yay! Internet! 01 Oct 1963 Detroit Free Press article. Highlights of the article: she's said to be 21 (that could be reporter's mistake), says she was adopted, says she was born Micmac in Maine. Her Micmac name is Tsankapasa, meaning "Little Fawn". Article says she only needs a fraction of a course to earn her B.A. in Oriental Philosophy. She has her certification in Elementary Teaching and has taught in Greenfield, Mass. She's quoted as saying that 3 years before this, so 1960, 3 fellows she knew - seniors - had opened a coffeehouse close to campus of U of Mass. "I had just bought a guitar 3 weeks before," Buffy recalls, "and I taught myself how to play it. I didn't know if I could sing but I thought I'd give it a try". **Interestingly, to me, is that in her 1958 high school graduation write up, her guitar is featured.
In other interviews, over the years, she has claimed that as a child, other children would ask her to make up songs and sing them yet it 1963, she says she doesn't know if she can sing. Okay, okay - singing for kids is a far cry from singing in front of an audience, but still....to claim to have taught herself guitar in 3 weeks and then going on stage and immediately getting calls from agents and record labels.
This article goes on and on with her claims - 3 books being written by her at the time of the interview, working on a guitar concerto, playing 10 instruments. In another article I've read she says she speaks Spanish, French and Cree but on her own Facebook profile she mentions ( a few years ago) how she'd like to learn Spanish. I guess she forgot it.
When she started spinning tales, there's no way she could have forseen how the Internet would eventually out her.
Adding this: Two months after the Detroit article was written, another interview for a newspaper in Vancouver - she's Cree now, lives in Maine in a place she calls "Fansville" because of the pride and enthusiasm her parents and brother and sister have in her work. Article says her brother is a teenager - who is this brother? Her brother is older by 4 or 5 years.
News reporters do get things wrong. Ask any famous person.
A youtube channel specializing in police and media interview analysis also did a brief look at BSM. Their conclusion was that BSM was lying, her story of her origins changed back and forth all the time. Sometimes she knew the full pictures, sometimes not. There is only one truth to your origins, not three or four
The 1940 Census shows two brothers, Alan K - 3 years old, and Wayne R. - 1 month old.

According to Buffy, her adoptive American parents were traveling through the Province of Saskatchewan in February 1941 when they encountered a young Cree woman on the Piapot Reserve with a child she could not care for. The young mother gave her daughter (Buffy) up for adotion to the couple from Massachusetts. A total nonsense story. In 1941, Canada was at war with Germany & had been since September 1939, the United States was neutral until the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7th. Americans were not allowed entry into Canada for travel & tourism in 1941. Travel across the international border was severely restricted & all crossings were under heavy military guard, as the Government was concerned about foreign agents committing acts of sabotage on Canadian soil. Canada was also under strict rationing controls. To purchase such basics as gas, oil & groceries, ration coupons were required & Americans were not eligible. Also road maps & atlas's were withdrawn from public circulation in 1939; travel across Canada was in that period restricted to secondary roads, as the trans-Canada Highway had yet to be built. Buffy was born, raised & educated in the United States, where like most of her fellow Americans, she knew absolutely zero about the history of my country. She shoots herself in the foot with her made up story.
Thanks for that background. The old saying "A liar has need of a good memory" seems apt here. Buffy seems to have told many different stories about her 'adoption' but this one about her parents traveling to Canada really takes the cake.

Yes a key question is, why, if she genuinely believed she was from the Cree community, has she not tried to find any Cree who she is related to? Even if she believed her birth mother had died, there would be a burial site, and there would be other family members (aunts, uncles, cousins) - some of whom would have remembered the birth and adoption of a baby or at least be able to shed light on the mother. And a DNA test would help her trace who she was actually related to. Of course, she doesn't want to do any searching like this as she knows full well that would put an end to her lies.

I was born in New England a few years later than Buffy. My birth certificate shows I was born to parents who adopted me (woman had hysterectomy and could not give birth). Someone was paid off to "fix" birth certificate. It does happen.
After an adoption, the child is given a new birth certificate with adopted parents name on it and the original one is usually not available to view without legal help.

Baloney. The same doctor delivered Buffy and her sister. The birth certificates are in chronological order, with Buffy's sandwiched between 48 and 50, which are just days apart. Face it, you supported a FRAUD.
In BSM case it is highly illogical that a white family who were capable of having children naturally, they already had a biological child, would then adopt a middle Cree child from 1000s of miles away in Canada, then have another baby naturally as their 3rd child. If they could not have children maybe it would be plausible. However they could have easily adopted a white child from MASS, as there were an abundance of adoption options in their own state.

Interesting that a relative said the family had to remain silent about her lies and not make trouble or they could “lose the house”. Was she providing money to them once she became successful? There’s a story there.

The doc did not fill in the full picture of the parents and family history. Buffy is five or more years younger than her siblings-why the gap? Did the mother have trouble and they adopted Buffy because she could be claimed as an Italian or "white" family. What about the grandparents? The Fifth Estate did not do that research. Buffy says her mother told her she was adopted from Isak-why else would she go there as a 23 year old woman searching for her roots? Too many unanswered questions. That's why so many people are not convinced.
