I'm surprised no one mentioned Victorinox SAKs, with alox handles. They certainly look more expensive than they are, they have that fancy, premium feel (opposite to plastic SAKs), and I've never met someone who's not proud owning one.

    • @megacab

that's a solid point, i've never met anyone that can't appreciate the usefulness and simplicity of a SAK. I have an alox mini champ on the keyring.

No doubt. Fox, MKM, Viper, Lionsteel, Giant Mouse all make great knives, but I don't think of any of them as being cheap. MKM especially makes excellent knives for the price, though.

Hey DCA, I am a carpenter and use my knife all day for a variety of construction related tasks. I currently carry a Spyderco Delica in VG10. I like this knife but I’m looking for a faster opening method and maybe a slightly better steel. This knife will get dusty, used hard and sharpened often to keep the edge refined. I’d like to stay under $200. Thank you, this is an awesome series.

You could go a completely different way and get a very interesting historical knife which would make a great conversation piece.
I recommend the German Mercator Black Cat, the Kaiser Wilhelm knife used in WW1 and still produced on the same machinery today.
The French Douk Douk is something similar and although hand made in France was much used by freedom fighters in their colonies.
Handmade Spanish navajas made in Spain can be a great option too.
These kind of knives get screaming edges on their high carbon steels. They will need sharpening more often but they are simple to sharpen and will definitely make the owner a real hobbyist.
    They are very affordable too.

Years ago i bought the Condor Otzi (based off the knife they found of a man they found frozen in the ice) because i read about him a lot growing up. Maybe a little more losely based on your suggestion i also picked up the Cold Steel Spartan because i love swords through history but cant practically carry one

Hey DCA hey Seth. Do you have knives you've retired from your daily carry because they became irreplaceable/the company stopped production? I'd love to see some of your most treasured knives!

  • @JerryLoffelbein
    @JerryLoffelbein 3 месяца назад

The CRKT Slacker for me is odd. The ergonomics are great, I love the field strip system with it, and the coating on the aluminum is good as well. For some reason though, it doesn't cut like I want it to. Even laying back the angle more than you probably should for 1.4116, I feel like the blade geometry is just a bit obtuse.
I was pleasantly surprised with the Petrified Fish Hourglass as well. I got the Sandalwood variant as well. If I had to nitpick it a little, I think there's a clear coat or something on the wood. I'm sure it's there to protect the wood, but you feel the gloss rather than the wood and feels a touch synthetic.
For slipjoints, I do need to pick up a Rosecraft sooner or later. I have a couple modern models from them that CJRB/Artisan does for them, but no traditionals yet. I think I'd go for the Barlow.
Boker amazed me with their Traditional 2.0 line. The couple I got were flawless in action, bone scales, mirror polished D2 blades and made in Germany rather than one of their Boker Plus partner facilities. Definitely worth the $45-60.
The PF Forward isn't too bad of a choice. David Chen tends to create some good designs, some of which are quite unconventional. My preference would have been the Terra. It's about the same price, a touch smaller but has contoured micarta scales and a wire clip.
Or you could go with something more fancy but still affordable from PF with the Deepsea. It "steps up" to K110, and uses silver twill and black horizontal grain carbon fibers.

Great topic. I’m pretty cheap, er, budget oriented…but I like nice stuff. The gist of this seems to be, as the title says, feeling of luxury for little money. As such, I wasn’t expecting “hard working knives” like the SRN or the second Petrified Fish. Glad to see them on the list. While I wouldn’t call them luxurious in appearance, they look like good candidates for pride of ownership. One of the first ones. (Name already slipped my mind) with the titanium bolster is gorgeous. Hi. Great segment, thanks for sharing the knowledge. I need an hour glass in my collection. Any way, ..Tip up down, a bit polarizing. I do not really care, but tend to set to tip up, to keep my muscle memory the same. Have you tried, in tip up, works best on flippers, compression lock was decent, cross bar..okay, while in pocket slide thumb beside the knife deep in pocket, then use middle finger on end of clip to pull the knife out almost in position to open? Basically, just before removing the knife it is in a "ready to open" position. Once practiced, I think equal to most tip down carries, if the clip complies. Maybe not for true tactical deployment. Thanks again.

The pry bar on the rose craft isn’t a new design, it’s old pre war design. The designer explained he saw old slipjoints in a catalog from the 30s, and noticed there was a pry bar on the end of the handle, and thought it would be cool to bring that idea back. So they def didn’t come up with that. I’ve yet to buy a rose craft knife, but I’ve been eyeing them up. I hear they’re similar to rough Ryder reserve, but you’ll NEVER see RR’s on this channel, as they are the house brand of Knife centers biggest competitor, SMKW.

l know there are a lot of great brands to recommend, but when I think of this question, two companies come immediately to mind: First is Civivi, which has never given me a knife I don't completely love. My first Civivi was a Praxis, and I still love it. I've added a couple of Conspirators, a couple of Elementums, and a couple of Cogents, and I gladly carry any of them. Second is Bestech. I started with an Eye of Ra and it feels like a very expensive knife to me. I recently got the push button tuxedo Swordfish, and while it's not super cheap, it certainly feels like a top of the line carry knife. However, my current EDC is my Bestechman Ronan with a 14C28N blade, a knife I am more comfortable with depending on to be absolutely reliable, functional, sturdy, and all around superb than any $50 should be. CRKT, Kershaw, CJRB, QSP, Vosteed, there are a lot of great companies, but Civivi and Bestech rise to the top in this category for me.

I came from the era when you could buy a "hardware store knife" for $10. Fast-forward to my first nice knife, a Buck 501. I paid $39 for it and still have it. My wife had a cow when I showed it to her, she said "What??? You spent forty bucks on a KNIFE???" I thought she'd probably scalp me with it! (That same Buck is now around $75, BTW.) Now we have Microtechs going into 4 figure price tags and nobody blinks an eye, and Microtech can't build them fast enough. Wherever you look, they're out of stock. Nonetheless, I enjoy watching your videos, they are well-performed and informative. But the sad truth is, I cannot afford today's knives, even the budget ones.

To sharpen an indestructable knife you need ...
    Plasma beams!
BTW, does KC sell that kind of sharpener? I couldn't find it on the site 😂

I may sound crazy but the CRKT Fossil always feels way more expensive to me. Rose Craft blades do the same.

FAQ : Hello DCA & nice KC team. I'm following you and enjoy your videos beyond the atlantic ocean from Burgundy France ! I used to be a "white collar" and still enjoy wearing an "gentleman edc". A couple years ago, you made a review on that king of edc. Is it possible to make an "up-date" ? Ideally, interm of price, i would like to stay under 150$ and 2.5 oz and I prefer to avoid thumbstud which I dislike. Thanks by advance. One MOST SERIOUS QUESTION : As an american guy, I wish you to come in burgundy : There is so much marvellous things to see and taste... What would you take as an EDC to come ? ;-)

My son has recently become enamored with everything cowboy. He has the boots, flannels, hat, etc. His birthday is coming up and I'd like to get him a decent fixed blade knife to go with the theme. Thoughts??? would prefer to stay under $100.

cold steel srk, it's a do it all near indestructible knife in a very useful blade shape with the industries best sheath, plus its $40, if you want to push the envelope you can often find the fancy versions on sale for right around $100 as well. I've seen the cpm 3v bladed one at midwayusa for $99 many times

I have about 30 knives, which include Fallkniven, Winkler, Benchmade, and Boker Plus. I carry a Prehistoric Fish Terra D2 more. The action is amazing, it feels great in my slightly narrow than average hands, it looks like a much more expensive piece, and blade shape is really useful. TpdaynI used it splitting firewood to baton apart a split that was connected by fibers a few times. By tapping it with the sledge side I’d of 8 lb maul.

Is there actually a difference between a wharncliffe and a "reverse tanto" blade shape? Seems like a clever rebranding. As long as we're on the topic, throw sheepsfoot in there, these all feel like variations on the same theme.

A "true" Wharncliffe should have a perfectly straight edge with a fairly acute tip. A reverse tanto is just a variation of a clip point with a cool name for marketing.

Hey DCA, question, like many knife lovers, I am a habitual fidgeter, and often my knife is the most fidgetable thing on hand. But normies often get nervous when they see you fidgiting with a knife, so I have been using the finger ring on a Gerber Remix. Are there any other knives with fidget-friendly features that don't involve opening the blade?
