- Type 1 diabetes (T1D), formerly known as juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease that originates when very little or no insulin is produced by the islets of Langerhans (containing beta cells) in the pancreas.[4] Insulin is a hormone required for the cells to use blood sugar for energy and it helps regulate normal glucose levels in the bloodstream.[2] Before treatment this results in high blood sugar levels in the body.[1] The common symptoms of this elevated blood sugar are frequent urination, increased thirst, increased hunger, weight loss.
Type 1 diabetes begins suddenly, typically in childhood or adolescence.[15] The major sign of type 1 diabetes is very high blood sugar, which typically manifests in children as a few days to weeks of polyuria (increased urination), polydipsia (increased thirst), and weight loss.[16][17] Sometimes children can also experience increased appetite, blurred vision, bedwetting, recurrent skin infections, candidiasis of the perineum, irritability, and performance issues at school.[16][17] Adults with type 1 diabetes tend to have more varied symptoms that come on over months rather than days to weeks
Hi! B-cells have GLUT 2 transporters (Not GLUT-4). Glut 4 is insulin-dependent so it wouldn't be logical that they were in B-cells for insulin signaling. Thanks for the explanations, really helpful!
