More like... "Slightly Overlooked Films By Well Known Directors"...
Yeah, this was the early days before I really knew what I wanted to do with the channel. For me, the term "underrated" meant films that didn't lack in exposure, but didn't come up on "Best of" sort of lists very often, so basically the red-headed step children of renowned filmmakers. Of course, after making this video I came to realize that a lot of these films get a ton of talk within the right circles, and also that many people have a very different definition of "underrated", and there's a reason I don't do "top five" list type videos anymore xD
Thanks for the reply! great video and I subbed to your channel! great content!
One underrated film that you actually showed a clip from earlier in the video is The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. It's a fantastic and beautiful western that more people need to see. Also, I don't understand how people say Death Proof is boring. I was entertained and engaged from start to finish much like every other Tarantino film.
I love it, it didn't make the cut for this particular video, but it's a true masterpiece. Still pissed Casey Affleck didn't win the Oscar that year. Right? I thought so too, I think the harsh split in the narrative ruins it for some people, but that's a huge part of what I love about it.
Yeah same dude. One of the best movies ive seen in years.
Did you see the Sam Fuller “I Shot Jesse James”? The movie as a whole may be truly great, perhaps not; but the images of violence and the emotions conveyed in connection with them are gorgeously and balletically poetic!
YES! I loved Punch Drunk Love! Its to date the only romantic comedy imo to really show what its like to be an alienated, socially awkward guy trying to find love! So glad i found your channel :)
It's fantastic! And Adam Sandler should have been at least nominated for an Oscar for his performance. Thanks, I'm glad you did too!
My list would look like:
1.) Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
2.) The People Under the Stairs
3.) Death Proof
4.) The Killing
5.) What About Bob?
The People Under the Stairs!!!!!!!!!♥️♥️♥️
- The Last Samurai
- 3:10 to Yuma
- Zodiac
- The Place Beyond the Pines
- Cold in July
Death proof is a classic. Not for everyone but I love the counselor.
I adore the first two. Try watching Eyes Wide Shut at 3:00 am it's marvelous !
I am so so so SO happy you included Death Proof. It's one of my favourite films ever. Thank you for including this.
I like your top three choices.
And Eyes Wide Shut is a piece of art, hugely underrated.
When I watched it I instantly fell in love with the movie, very distinct and impactful.
Zodiac is a masterpiece. When the credits roll, you're left feeling almost depressed and wanting more because it's so good. It really makes you wish you'd been there in that corner of time.
I agree. The way it captures that time is just incredible, it's probably my favorite time and place in American history.
I agree totally, Eyes Wide Shut is definitely often overlooked.
I'm still not sure why to be honest, maybe it needs another decade or so before people really warm to it.
That's true, as with all Kubrick films, it needs time for people to realize it's better than it seemed on first viewing
It honestly ranks as high as some of the other Kubrick films mentioned imo...all I can imagine is the source material.
@@daniel_netzel Didn't Kubrick's final edits get rolled back though? I know for a fact the sound design wasn't finished prior to his death, and thus was not done to his specification. The orgy scenes supposedly were way worse (children?) and who knows what else we are missing. One gets the sense that something is missing, or not quite connected, when watching the film.
Gotta love the last line of the movie...one to remember.;)
And eyes wide shut was Kubricks favorite film of his own
I did not know this! I can't blame him, it's a masta-PEACE.
One day under the influence of hallucinogens i saw this movie, it felt like i was not ready to know so much.
Zodiac is so overlooked. It’s a masterpiece!
The funny thing is that I don't like most of Kubrick's movies, but I did enjoyed Eyes Wide Shut.
I felt something similar while watching this video. I love Fincher's other films but didn't like Zodiac at all.
Yeah me too! I feel like this is his most unique and special film
I haven't seen The Counsellor but I completely agree with 4-1.
However, my pick for most underrated film of all time goes to A.I: Artificial Intelligence. That film floors me every time I watch it.
+TheVideoInvader That's one I still have to see, I tried watching it as a child and it went WAY over my head.
Film Radar Treat yourself and give it another look. I'm sure it would warrant a detailed analysis.
+TheVideoInvader I'll have to do that! I do still love Steven Spielberg's work during that time.
Film Radar Yeah, two (IMO) sci-fi classics in a row. Only at the helm of a real master is that possible.
Strongly, strongly agree. I love that movie.
Punch drunk love is very underrated but Zodiac is an underrated masterpiece. Even though it’s not my favourite fincher is definitely one of the more “perfect” films I’ve ever seen
I think this should be titles "Top 5 Underrated Films from Well-known Filmmakers"
Punch Drunk Love is truly Sandler’s best performance. PTAs films are so good it’s hard to place this but it’s one of my favorites.
I remember seeing Zodiac at seventeen and not being sure what to make of it, it looked good but that was about it. feel like i should rewatch it now ten years later! Two films i found to be underrated are the fountain and sunshine
The Fountain and Sunshine are both fantastic films, flawed in my opinion, but still amazing cinematic achievements nevertheless.
Sunshine is fantastic
Zodiac is far away better than Seven. Probably the most complex thriller of all time, and I'm not talking about the plot. One of the greatest masterpieces of history of cinema.
Couldn't agree more, I think it's one of Fincher's masterpieces, along with Fight Club and The Social Network.
Film Radar I would agree with Social Network, also its a huge masterpiece. Fight Club is awesome and does some brilliant things, but in my opinion it isnt so great as the other two we have mentioned.
Totally fine to have that opinion, Fight Club has always been a masterpiece in my mind though.
Adrián G. Fuentes why not? fight club is a modern classic! why isn’t it a masterpiece in your opinion?
@@pitbull635 Hi! I think the popular opinion about Fight Club is mostly influence by the people who watched it en early and impresionable ages. Its a movie that could be very shocking, but can loses the impact after a certain time. Above all, I like it very much, and its a brilliant exercise of technique (the sound is awesome).
Said that, I consider other Fincher movies better in almost everyway. The formal perfection wich you can find in his latest works, incluiding his episodes for Mindhunter are truly breathtaking in comparison.
Sorry about my english, I'm spanish.
please do a full video on Eyes Wide Shut! Would love to hear what you have to say about the masterpiece!
I might some day!
Great list. Another movie I'd call underrated is upstream color, a lot of people are calling it pretentious artsy bullshit, but I had The feeling that everything had a purpose that I just wasnt getting.
I haven't seen it, but I'd like to. I'm terrible, I haven't even seen Primer yet :P
Primer is fanstastic. So much from so little.
I would nominate Alan Parker's "Angel Heart" (1987) for this list. You sometimes hear people mention Robert DeNiro's performance, but it's Mickey Rourke as the lead who is really fantastic. The doom and foreboding that builds over the course of the film is amazing. It's a little confusing, but bears repeat viewings well.
I haven't seen it yet, but my brother keeps trying to convince me to watch it...I'm really bad about getting to movies I should be seeing :P
But Punch Drunk Love IS A MASTERPIECE. I dont even think it was ever underrated.... It won in Cannes and since then become a real cult movie.
Definitely thought you'd mention The Fall since it was featured in the beginning- so underrated.
I stand by the statement that Eyes Wide Shut is Kubrick's best film.
It's incredible, though I'd still gotta give that top spot to 2001. Though Eyes Wide Shut is annoyingly underrated if you ask me.
It truly is underrated! And 2001 is second on my list so it is right up there. I wish people would stop overlooking Eyes Wide Shut as just an "satanic orgy" movie.
Eyes Wide Shut is my 2nd favorite behind 2001
You had me Punk Drunk Love
I have been told my quite a few people to watch Death Proof, It's been on my Netflix list for a while now. I loved Zodiac, There was legitimately a moment when I was actually terrified for Jake Gyllenhaal in the basement. It also had a complex plot that for some reason I never felt myself drift away from following or getting confused. It was basically... brilliant.
+JumpCutThoughts It's pretty great, it's one of those movies where you either love it or hate it, so it's hard to say but I think you might really enjoy it! God, that scene was amazing, very incredibly tense. I'm glad you think so, I really can't say enough good things about that movie.
Screenplay written by Cormac McCarthy... "Isn't afraid to go into very dark territory." Yeah that sounds just about right lol.
Great list. I love each one. And I kept thinking Eyes Wide Shut should be at the top. Genius film not appreciate for being as great as it is. I really enjoy Punch Drunk Love but it’s probably my least favourite on the list. I could think of other films I’d put here above it. But otherwise we’re in agreement.
I loved Punch Drunk Love... but I have to say that it was the most nerve-wrecking love story I've ever seen. I was not smiling all the way through. The tension was just that effective.
It's great, Adam Sandler's performance mesmerizes me every time I see it. It's definitely not your standard love story, but that's why I like it so much.
I fucking love death proof! Best movie ending
Hmmm...fan of Death Proof...feet in your profile pic...are you Quentin Tarantino? XD
It really does have a great ending though, the degradation of Stuntman Mike is beautiful to behold.
zodiac is one of my all time faves. I love fincher.
Great list! You got yourself a new sub. A few underrated movies that I recommend are Blow Out, In Bruges and Dead Man with Johnny Depp.
My list would be
1. Eyes Wide Shut
2. Killing Them Softly
3.The Insider
4. Birth
5. A simple Plan
I own four outta these five. Remembers to add The Counselor to my mental list of movies I need to watch. This is why I subbed to this channel.
1. Buffalo ‘66
2. Julien Donkey Boy
3. Death Proof
4. Tyrel
5. Melancholia
Ok, since you put Buffalo '66 at #1 I feel compelled to check out your number 2, 4, and 5 choices (already seen Death Proof). What are your 6 through 10 selections?
daniel better 6. Trouble Every Day 7. New Jerusalem 8. A Hole in my Heart 9. Minnie and Moskowitz 10. Mister Lonely
Zodiac is miles ahead of anything I've seen Fischer do except social network and maybe gone girl
It's easily my favorite Fincher film, it's just everything, one of the great films of our time. You should check out Mindhunter by the way, it's like Zodiac the Series, it's amazing.
Film Radar cool I will
I love Death Proof
Sammeeeee
while Zodiac is in my #9 film of all time, i wouldnt say its miles ahead of Se7en. Se7en is my #12, both are masterpieces imo
Fight Club #1?
@@clash79 well my list has changed a lot. When it comes to Fincher, it would probably go 1. Se7en 2. The Social Network 3. Zodiac 4. The Game 5. Panic Room 6. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 7. Fight Club 8. Gone Girl
@@slobonmyfilmsnob I’m a little surprised that a Fincher fan has Fight Club so low. I think it’s his masterpiece, and has only gotten more relevant over the years. The guy doesn’t make bad movies, though, so it’s hard for me to rank them after FC
@@clash79 I really like fight club. I would say I like it slightly less the more I watch it but I do agree that he hasn't made a bad film (at least out of the ones I've seen)
Love this channel.
Thank you, I love your comment!
It's so good to see you still love film Dan 😊
+Zack Daley Oh you know it Zack! :D
Hey man, I just found your channel !
What a list you have.
The Consoler is by far one of the most underrated films. I was shock when I started hearing people talk bad about it. However I don't think the dialog is unrealistic... one of the things I liked about it, it's his realistic nature.
The Punch Drunk, I also totally agree. People should talk about it more, I often use it as an example of what a romantic comedy can be!!
Death Proof... I wasn't expecting a full on action flick nor did I found the talk boring. But I would not mention it as a underrated movie worth noticing.
Zodiac - Again totally agree. I think eventually it will find it's cult status like Fincher's other films. Personally it was the one I was like "ok..." the first time I saw it... now I put it up hight. Pretty sure it's going to get the status it deserves it's just a bit subtle and discrete in someways leading people to take some time to really appreciate it. Master Piece!
Eyes Wide Shut - You've said it... If I had to pick the most underrated movie in history this would be it. I actually don't know how so many people say it's carp. Personally it's actually on my top of Kubrick's Films.
I also liked The Counselor. A lot of people didn't get the over the top dialogue and labelled it as pretentious (very much similar to season 2 of True Detective) so I understand the indifference. But I really liked it.
I'd argue that Punch Drunk Love and Zodiac aren't really underrated as they're well loved critically.
I never "got" Death Proof so I don't like that film. Well maybe except for the last car chase. That was epic.
Eyes Wide Shut is an interesting one. I think it's safe to say that it has gradually built critical acclaim (as with most Kubrick films). When it just came out everyone hated it. Ten years later, a gained a cult following. Another ten years later and people are starting to like it. In fact it is quite a popular film. So another ten years and it may well be on the road to becoming a classic.
Personally, some of my favorite recent underrated movies are: Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, Tron Legacy, Martyrs, The Village, XxX and The Ninth Gate
Couldn't agree more with the top 2!
Similar in some ways for me... the pace. Something's just hypnotizing with them, once i've pressed play its hard to stop looking.
(cuz I sometimes just want to see the beginning and end up wathcing the whole film )
I've only seen The Zodiac from your list, really enjoyed it. I've wanted to see Punch Drunk Love for ages but never seen it on Sky movies or Netflix. I had written off The Counsellor due to bad reviews but I'll keep an eye out for it. I hadn't heard of Eyes Wide Shut so I'll need to add that to my must watch list. I'm a big fan of Tarantino's films, I think Death Proof is the only one I've not seen, I'll watch it one day. Thanks for the list, I'm enjoying your videos!
I liked "The Counselor" as well. I liked that the ending was really, REALLY dark. There was a speech by "Jefe" played by Rubén Blades that is my favorite speech of any speech in any movie I've ever seen. I wish I could link a better clip: ruclips.net/video/9fEjS2mwTqA/видео.html
Speaking of Kubrick, has there ever been a better portrayal of stoical heroism and sense of duty than Kirk Douglas reaching the ladder in “Paths of Glory” about 1.5 seconds before the designated time for the charge out of the trench, 1.5 seconds being the time required to exit the trench and fulfill the order, which he does on time to the split-second? And that last glance around to look at his men as he’s about to lead them?
Thinking back to PoG, my mind then drifted to The Killing, towering heist classic. And that makes me think of “Riffifi,” written by a blacklisted writer in exile. But the interesting thing, is how in that film the Marxist themes - let’s call it ‘Marxist humanism’ come through: how brotherhood and creativity are subverted by money, selfishness and egoism, and simple greed, and how priceless relationships, love and lives are destroyed for and over money. Clearly someone had been exposed to Marx to make a film like that (no less than in the case of Spartacus, of course), yet we see the campaign to rid Hollywood of Marxist propaganda and indoctrination as the paranoid fantasy and cynical persecution of innocent artists. But the truth seems much, much more complex! Keep it up, your videos are a treasure!
Since I agree with all your choices, give it take Punch Drunk Love, I guess I should see The Counsellor. Never seen it.
Barry Lyndon & Eyes Wide Shut are my favourite Kubrick movies. A Clockwork Orange is great but it's the only Kubrick film that hasn't aged well.
I think it's aged fine personally, but it never gets easier to watch.
out of curiosity what did you find great about Barry Lyndon?
Everything. The costumes, perfect cinematography, acting and the journey Barry Lyndon goes through.
Death Proof was not released on its own. It was the second half of a Grindhouse style double feature. As such, following such a frenetically paced film as Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror was simply setting up a failure of this film.
I think the two work well enough together, the first time I watched them was together as the Grindhouse Double Feature and I had an absolute blast with it, but yeah, I think for most people it'd feel pretty weird. Especially because Death Proof is paced a lot slower than even other Tarantino films are.
I never understood the Death Proof hate. Zodiac is just not well known. I saw it just a couple years ago and was stunned that it wasn't as popular as some of his others. Not to compare the two, but I don't think Gone Girl gets the praise it deserves.
My top 5 favorite underrated films
1. The Big Sleep(1946)
2. Legend(1985)
3. Westworld(1973)
4. Public Enemies(2009)
5. Gangs Of New York(2002)
Mad Max Fury Road doesn't have any in depth dialogue and you still care about most of the protagonists. The problem with the dialogue in Death Proof is that 80% of it is irrelevant to the main thin plot, but it is still an entertaining movie that I want to see again.
I wouldn't call any of these films (exept th Counsellor) underrated, great but not underrated
Underrated is a tricky word, it means something different to everyone. For me, it's about movies that have every shot of being really acclaimed(great director, all star cast) but fall short in the eyes of critics or fans of the filmmaker, and in that respect I'd say all of these movies fit the bill, but for sure some of them have quite a loyal following, and plenty of people even consider them the best work of the respective director.
Film Radar in my opinion an underrated film is a film which doesnt get enough praise overall, critics and usual moviegoers, unless the case is dumb like people thinkin Drive is a FAF esque film
Great list ! Eyes wide shut is one of my favorite movies
idk why but i just love that shot at 7:34
I love every shot in that film, especially anything with the Christmas lights, I'm just a sucker for a good shot with Christmas lights, Birdman has a really nice one as well.
Love Zodiac and Eyes Wide Shut.
Finally, some recognition to The Counselor!
+Rino Eliassen Thank you! No one's been mentioning that but I think it's great, and sadly you don't hear people talking about it all that much.
Words well spoken, you phrase it well in the video.
I think it's a pretty unique feel to the film. It's about ignorance, making choices without seeing the consequences. The whole film is filmed in a beautiful sort of "angelic" way, almost like poetry. And then the total reality wakeup-crash in the third act.
Rino Eliassen That third act is a gut punch. I agree, especially the scenes with Penelope Cruz and Michael Fassbender, they really kind of lull you into feeling that these characters are completely safe when they are anything but.
Brilliant list, brilliant
I'm not sure how underrated these films are. While it's an excellent list of films, with the exception of The Counsellor which I had a lukewarm response to (although I'm a huge Riddley Scott fan), as far as I know all those other films are considered great by the majority who see them, and if not they should be. The only one which I absolutely love but find many people don't is Death Proof. I'm tempted to say it's my favorite Tarantino film of them all and glad to see it on your list.
Also, it should be noted that Eye's Wide Shut was re-cut after Kubrick's death so the finished project may not be the directors exact intended vision, although I still think it's amazing.
On a side note, what film is that shot from at 0:31? It's amazing.
In hindsight the word "underrated" may not have been the most appropriate. To me all the films on this list kind of fit the same mold, all films by great directors that are shunned a little more than their other work. Ridley Scott speaks for itself I'd say, but with PTA you have everyone praising There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights, without as much love for Punch Drunk Love. Zodiac never seems to get as much love as Seven or Fight Club and I really never hear anyone talking about Eyes Wide Shut when discussing Kubrick, it's always almost every other film he's made except that one. And Death Proof I think is fair, people talk a lot of trash on it but I love it.
As far as I know all that was done after his death was the censoring of more explicit nudity/sex, which he approved because he just wanted it to have an R rating.
It's from "The Fall", one of the most beautifully shot films you'll ever watch in your entire life, the script is flawed but it's a film worth checking out for the visuals alone.
"RevolveR" is the most underrated film of our generation. It is one of the best films to break down and talk about.
Never saw it but I'll add it to the list!
P.S. Thanks for watching so many of my videos, you rock!
Is Zodiac really that underrated? I know the general public wasn't into it but I remember a lot of critics calling it Fincher's best film (which it still is).
I 100% agree with you about Zodiac. But I couldn't disagree more about Death Proof. It's boring but not because of the lack of action, it's because of the characters and dialogue. And you know you need a slap across the face when you start homaging your own films. I was so disappointed with that film. The soundtrack however is superb
Fair enough, that sort of thing is either going to be to your liking or it isn't, I can't really objectively argue that the dialogue is interesting, but I personally loved it. Oh yeah, the soundtrack is fucking incredible.
I Love death proof
Underrated by whom???
I guess the box office. It is not like any of those were secret indie cult hits like e.g. Clerks, Meet The Feebles or Down By Law started out as.
Underrated has nothing to do with box office performance it has to do with ratings and outside of The Counselor all of these films are highly rated by critics and audiences alike.
By average movie goer
This was great! I'd love to hear some of your opinions on some truly British films.
If you do, here's a great starting point: Hattie Dalton's "Third Star".
+milliehutchings Thank you so much! Sadly I am very inexperienced in foreign films, a problem I hope to rectify soon. I've seen quite a few of Danny Boyle's films, Edgar Wright's, pretty much all the big ones that crossover to the states. I'll have to check it out! It sounds quite interesting, and Benedict Cumberbatch is one of my favorites.
Punch Drunk Love is one of my favorite movies ever
Sooo goooooooood.
Was really hoping you would talk about the assasination of jesse james by the coward robert ford. One of my favorites.
One of mine as well! Some of my favorite cinematography ever done, and the original score is actually perfect.
After watching this I'm surprised that I haven't already seen Zodiac! It looks like (as you brilliantly stated) a masterpiece! I will definitely be watching it some time soon.
+I've Been Darren I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! It's a little long, and it moves slow at certain parts, but it's all in service of the story.
I actually watched it today and it was amazing!
+I've Been Darren I'm glad you liked it! One of my all time favorites.
Death Proof has aged extremely well
I would add "A Face in the Crowd" from 1956 by Elia Kazan. Some of the best satire I've ever seen. Andy Griffith is brilliant as Lonesome Rhodes, Patricia Neal is great as the woman who both loves and despises him. Walter Matthau and Lee Remick are great, too, in supporting parts. To me its as good as "On The Waterfront" and "Streetcar Named Desire" as Kazan's best. Was a box office bomb when it came out but it holds up extremely well 60 years later. Lonesome Rhodes essentially is Donald Trump 60 years ago. I love "The Andy Griffith Show", which he did soon after this, but Griffith never played a part like this again, it's too bad because he's amazing in this.
For me, Southland Tales, it's a bloody masterpiece, I'll fight anyone who says otherwise.
Never seen it, though I'm a huge fan of Donnie Darko
Film Radar Donnie Darko is my favourite movie :)
Basically Southland Tales is Richard Kelly's magnum opus. It's a masterpiece. It's long though and extremely dense, there's a lot of stuff to follow. It's is brilliant though. I'd really recommend it.
Great list! 5 of my favorites. The Darjeeling Limited is another one much like these, for sure (you hinted at it by showing a clip).
I love The Darjeeling Limited, I think it's Wes Andersons' most underrated film by FAR.
Thank you, finally someone says Death Proof is underrated. I love death proof (even tho its my least favorite tarantino film) I hate the first story, but the second part to the film is definitely the one you can tell he poured his heart out on. The second story is about as good as kill bill level.
Oh man, I love the first part, possibly more than the second half. It just has such a realism to it, it's so engaging and I love every second of it.
Mystery Men is completely underrated.
10: Cars 2
9: The Godfather part 3
8: Alien vs Predator
7: Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome
6: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
5: Kill Bill vol. 2
4: License to Kill
3: The Lost World: Jurassic Park
2: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
1: Eyes Wide Shut
the Phantom Menace? seriously??
I love the Mad Max series, but man I can not get into Thunderdome. Oddly, I actually saw it in the theater as a kid, and was the only one I watched until I was in my 20s
The Last Jedi is great, and most people recognize that. The haters are just really loud
Yes! I love Zodiac so much!
It's amazing, possibly my favorite Fincher film.
I LOVED Eyes Wide Shut right up to the middle of the film. I was really enjoying everything about it and loved where it was going. Everything that leads up to the mansion where the weird masked party was happening. IMO the film takes a hard left turn at that point and becomes a totally different movie that is really boring when compared to the first half of the film. I wanted to love this film, and I do love the first half of the film. I just wish it would have kept on in that direction.
Interestingly a few other Kubrick films do the same thing. 2001 A Space Odyssey's first half is all about the sci-fi nuts and bolts of getting to where they're going. The second half becomes a psychedelic, philosophical, well... odyssey.
Full Metal Jacket also has the first act: the boot camp, and the second act: the actual war. The only difference between Eyes Wide Shut and the other two movies is that I liked both halves of the other two.
what are you on about?
I have been following you videos for quite a while and it has got me understanding movies better than before, i have a question i wanted to ask tho are superhero movies bad from a story telling perspective?
Thanks for the support! I'd say they're bad for character and for story. They follow the typical hero story structure and just slightly change things up like a bad game of Mad-Libs. I think mostly they just need to reinvent themselves like with Christopher Nolan did, but that takes talent, and an open minded studio, which is almost impossible to find.
i hope one day you can do a contrast video or a what's wrong with super hero movies video, keep up the good work this is from 2015 but your videos are quite enlightening👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I love death proof and soundtrack
I loved the counselor when it came out, only to find out every one of my friends hating it... i could not understand why... i have to watch it again.
You know, I've only seen it once myself, and part of me is paranoid that I'll hate it on a second viewing xD
Eyes Wide Shut and Zodiac are underrated~? I only have ever heard praise from those two. Especially for Zodiac.
I thought eyes wide shut was border line cult classic. And thought most people liked that one
Ahhh Zodiac is my shit, I'm ALWAYS telling people to go and watch it but now I'll just link them to this video. Great list.
Personally I slightly prefer Memories of Murder to Zodiac but they are both great films and I think the latter is easily Fincher's best work.
I have yet to see it, but I know I'm going to love it when I do. I agree on Zodiac being his best work though for sure.
Eyes Wide Shut is phenomenal. Like your vids. What do you think about "The Thin Red Line" (1999)? It's my fav.
Thank you! I haven't seen it, the only Terence Malick film I've seen is "The Tree of Life" which I need to see again before finalizing my opinion, but on a first viewing, I liked parts of it, but was disappointed.
the counsellor is so artistically subtle and artificial
Good list and i can agree with you except on Deathproof. i think its a good movie but nothing too special... and Punch Drunk Love is way underrated and i tell many people about it and insist they watch it :)
This whole list is compromised of opinions, and anyone is entitled to disagree. I'd suggest watching it again though, Death Proof was a terrible piece of crap in my mind the first time I saw it, but oh man has it grown on me with subsequent viewings.
Zodiac is one of my 17 year old sons favorites. It is great
Thanks again
It's so good! Thank you :D
Oh... No I definitely thought Eyes Wide Shut was a masterpiece but I didn’t connect with it. It was... weird but I don’t deny the talent behind the director. It just wasn’t something that I enjoyed watching.
As for Death Proof, I enjoyed it but comparing it to his other work, it falls short.
I’ll check out these other films, I’ve heard extremely good things about Zodiac and Punch Drunk Love looks amazing! I love Sandler and think he’s capable of so much more than what some of his recent films have been like. Though I did enjoy The Do-Over. That was funny as hell!
I'll add "out of the furnace" . . great movie with great actors performance. .
Damn, I almost forgot that was a thing. I never got around to seeing it, but it looked fantastic.
Film Radar yeah! I'm glad you respond, friend. . the movie starring by christian bale and casey affleck. . 👍
u really named fucking Spartacus instead of Full Metal Jacket and Dr. Strangelove?
I agree that Eyes Wide Shut is highly underrated though, it's probably in my top 3 of Kubrick films, and I love every single one of them, including Lolita (which is actually even more underrated) and The Killing
thank god I'm not the only one who thought death proof is underrated
+Asa Fisher It's such a great movie!
punch drunk love is a masterpiece.
Truth.
Eyes wide shut is in my top 50 of all time, zodiac is also one of my favorites
shawn lilly You have a Top 50? jesus!
the king of comedy - deniro and Scorsese at their best sans swearing and violence
You should do an analysis of Shame.
I've considered it, I'm really weird when it comes to choosing topics, it's a very haphazard process, but I love the film, I still think it's probably Michael Fassbender's best performance, and a really powerful film.
Lets just pick a bunch of aclaimed directors and pick at their lesser works. The fact is that these works would be great under a new director but in context of the rest of these directors filmography they fall in the light of the scutiny.
That was actually the exact thought process behind choosing these films, and you'll notice I never made another video like this so I think that can sum up how I feel about it. But oh well, you learn as you go along, and you'll cringe at older work, but that's just the way it goes haha.
Would love a supernatural film by Tarantino
