If you want to color the background of a slide then you can go to the Design ribbon, to the far right is an option to Format Background. From there you can choose a solid fill. You can also choose a gradient or picture fill, but I would steer clear of pattern and texture fills. Alternately, you can put a square on the slide, remove the border, fill it with the color you want, right click and select Send to Back...
