    07:30 Soviet tank warranty guarantees that, in case a tank fails to protect your life, you simply need an order - signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters - to get a new tank.

    Fun fact in tanker training we're taught to never drive through or into a building unless you have too, not because you might damage the tank tho i suppose that could happen, no the reason why you should never drive a tank through a building is because if the building has a basement or something of the sort there's a vary good chance that the flooring wont hold up to the weight of a 70 ton death machine rampaging across the battlefield. The more you know ;)

    T-80UD was developed by KMDB in Kharkiv, obviously when the USSR broke up the factory that built them was in Ukraine. T-80UDs were operated by the Russian Federation for some years afterwards, and fired upon the White House (the Russian Parliament, not the American one) in 1993, and as the engines broke down without support from KMDB, the T-80UD hulls were scrapped and the turrets were removed and placed on T-80BV hulls to create T-80UE1s.
    Most of the T-80UDs that were in Ukraine were eventually sold to Pakistan, with a few examples, complete with Drozhd APS, being sold to the US for OPFOR training. Ukrainians developed the T-84 series for the T-80UD, with a new welded turret, and transmission with a better reverse speed.

      Steven Zaloga's book T-80 tank, T-80UD was designed by Nikolai Shomin(russian) who was the new chief designer after A.Morozov(russian) in Malyshev Plant,
      there was a dispute whenever it should be called T-80UD or T-84 but they chose the first one because it would be believed that the Soviets were operating 4 different tanks, 500 models were produced with 320 stationed in kharkov and the other were in Omsk.

  • @gv4058
    @gv4058 2 месяца назад +19

    The difference between the diesels in the T-72/T-90 and T-64/T-80ud are quite drastic. The T-64/T-80ud engines are 2-stroke opposed piston engines (thus the higher pitch sound), pretty much a engine with 2 crank shafts on each end that hold pistons that share the same cylinder and move towards each other. So for example if you have a 6 cylinder opposed piston diesel it would have 12 pistons, this design also means there's no intake or exhaust valves but ports that are un/covered by the pistons and air is forced into the cylinders via a blower. As for the T-72/T-90 engines they're just your common 4-stroke V12 diesels sort of descendents of the V-2 (T-34 etc engine).
    Also more history times with sturmling.

    • @petergray2712
      @petergray2712 2 месяца назад +5

      The T-64 engine was much more labor and time intensive in manufacturing and maintenance than conventional diesels. That's why the Soviets went back to a conventional diesel on the T-72/T-90 series.

    • @edim108
      @edim108 2 месяца назад +1

      @@petergray2712Same thing with the Chieftain's L60 opposed piston diesel. Opposed piston engines can theoretically be more reliable and require less maintenance but in practice conventional diesels are just more practical so far.

    Small expansion on small history lesson on T-80UD: when gas turbine showed to have "issues" (which were basically not enough material quality and build quality), Soviets went ahead and started developing better engine. By better it was meant "ease of repair, more powerfull and lower profile", as current generation(s) of B-2 (V-2 in English) were not good enough for T-80/T-90, even though it was good enough for T-34. So they built a new family of engines, called 2v. Basically it's either 6-cylinder or 12-cylinder opposed-cylinder powerpack, with V6 being flat line and v12 being x-cross layout. 2v-12-03 is basically what's in T-14 Armata (12Н360 or 12N360 in English) and they basically deliver what they are supposed to do: they are powerpacks that are swapped like turbines, are lower than other engines and definitely consume less fuel than gas turbine. Still, even the 1200HP engine is not good enough for T-14. But they are way better than old V-2 line and another 5TD boxer engine they experimented with in T-64. Oh, and they're DEFINITELY NOT version of old PzKpfw V engines, as urban legend goes.

M/42 DT once Sweden was added to the game. But sadly, the IPad died after two years due to poor treatment by me. To try and fox a problem, we wiped the thing's memory. As a result, the channel and all it's comments were deleted. When I got a phone in 2020, and re-discovered Bo, I decided to start from where I had left off originally.

    Stirmling was wrong. The "issue" with the T-80s gas turbine is it's CRAZY expensive. The Diesel on the T-72/90 cost a little over 20k while the GT on the T-80 costs 130k because they're so difficult to mass produce. The T-80UD was an experiment to see if they could just get the T-72 diesel to work so there'd be backup engines for the T-80 since replacement GTs wouldn't be available.
    Additionally the Russians are now making new T-80 hulls in addition to refurbishing existing hulls. Though it is only a handful a month for now, the idea is that when they run out of old hulls to refurbish they'll be able to increase the production of new hulls straight away. I think at this point every single politician in the Russian Federation has toured the factory where they are made.
    The primary reason for the T-80s gas turbine btw is not performance as per the Abrams, but rather gas turbines can operate at temperatures below -40 degrees, which is the freezing temperature of diesel fuel, and there are plenty of places in Russia that regularly get that cold.

    Ever since the creation of the T-72, they continued to just upgrade it and renaming it by upgraded wise, if I’m correct of this statement the T-90 is the latest “remodeled” T-72 in their inventory right now. The full T-80s that were used mostly were the ones that were able to use more mobility.

Also added spal liners, slate armor.. Different tank entirely.

The people of KMDB is more familiar with the opposed piston diesel, meanwhile the Omsktransmash people are more familiar with the turbines.

    It is not strictly true to say they are slapping new stuff onto things they already have. The T-14 and the B-14 and the K-14 are all new tanks with new more powerful diesel engines. They use gas turbine engines in the T-80s because they use them in the Arctic and in their navy units because gas turbines don't care about the cold and can use the fuels the navy uses. The new build T-80s will likely be existing T-80s from storage upgraded to the new T-80BVM level and possibly with 1,250hp GT engines. The original GT engine was 1,000hp, while the diesel engine of the T-80UD was 1,200hp. The T-80 was expensive to operate but had very good mobility and suited very very cold weather and naval conditions so it was used in the far east and the far north and by the navy, but otherwise was kept in storage. Some experts are hoping the T-80BVM upgrade will do to the T-80 what they did to the T-72 to make it the T-90. The T-64 and T-80 are the expensive but capable tanks, while the T-72 was the cheap tank to replace all the tens of thousands of older types. It was the mass production tank. The T-90 upgraded the T-72s performance to T-64/T-80 levels. Experts are hoping they might make the T-80 cheaper to operate but still capable, and have been suggesting T-100 as a designation for it.

    The gas turbine was never broken. It burned a lot of fuel so they wanted a less thirsty diesel engine and both were made in the Ukraine so when the Soviet Union split up they wanted a Russian engine. The new more powerful diesel engines for their tanks were made in Ukraine too, so they only had the T-80UD with D meaning diesel engines that had been made before the split. The Russians kept the gas turbine powered T-80s because they are rather good in extreme cold conditions and also the navy uses fuels that the T-80s can run on that makes it useful. The Russians make the 1,250hp gas turbines and are getting close to a 1,500hp engine as I understand it. Unlike the US Abrams gas turbine the Soviet turbines for their tanks use a vibration cleaner in their air filter system so it does not have to be cleaned out every 6 hours. Gas turbines are not good for very heavy vehicles that stop and start a lot, but when armoured vehicles shift to electric drive then gas turbines will be ideal because running at efficient RPMs just generating electricity they are compact and fuel efficient as long as they are not put under torque loads.

    Yea its a T-80 that plays like a T-72. Still another T-80 without the improvements of a T-80!

    Just a question. Is Sturmling a person who is well versed in Armoured Warfare?

    The agony you all must have felt from playing at 10.0 was well worth it. Loved the video!! Really enjoyed the Ted Talk from Sturmling. The man's sass is only exceeded by his wisdom of Russian military vehicles.

    Honestly they could downtier all 4km reverse speed tanks from China and Russia by -1 br and they would still be bad. I can't understand why people complain just because their UFP is not as easy to pen as other tanks
