Another Cincinnati favorite is goetta, I can't stand that. suum cuique.
I grew up there - people do not say "What?" they say "Please?" (It's from German.) You can probably handle that after a while - and the snow . *Worry about the summer humidity instead.*
I live in northern Ohio, I wasn't really familiar with Cincinnati until my son was in school there. Cincinnati is actually really well put together while having a cool randomness to it. The downtown area is really accessible to walking and some biking, The Connector make traversing parts of the city great. Being used to Cleveland and Toledo, I can tell you that Cincinnati is way prettier and more geared towards it's residents in general instead of just focusing on a couple of things (Cleveland IE Browns/Cavs).
Very informative...but you left out a couple things. Although it's true that sometimes winter comes in November...often it doesn't get really cold until January. I remember one Xmas when it got over 80 degrees and me and my cousins played basketball all day outside. Also a lot of times we get the bulk of snowfall in February / March, we've even got snow in April before. And if you've lived here as long as I have ( I'm 65 ) we seem to always have a "false spring" in February / March. It's 3 or 4 days to a week where the sun comes out, the temp goes into the 70's or 80's, everyone thinks it's spring...and the next week it's 18 degrees out with snow! That's the great thing about this area...if you like seeing the seasons change, at times you can experience all 4 of them in a 24 - 48 hour period. As far as sports, you left out NKU...they are now a Div. 1 program and always seem to have a good basketball program. As far as the Kelce's and Tayler "Twit", do what I did...IGNORE Travis and Taylor and only claim his brother Jason ! Also, as far as "Cincy Style" Chili...yes, it's weird if you're not from here...but everyone I've ever gotten to try it...it only took them tasting it one time to be hooked. My Wife is originally from South Carolina and lived in LA as well. The first time she came here to visit for a week, the first place I took her was Skyline, she liked it so well we must have eaten there 5 times that week, LOL ! Something else that I highly recommend is "Plesant Ridge Chili's " loaded fries....crisp French Fries cover in shredded Sharp Cheddar and Brown Gravy....mmmm, mmmm ! And you also forgot that aside from "Cincy Style" Chili ( which is actually a Greek Hamburger soup ) what we are known for is Pork and Beer. The nickname for Cincy is "Porkopolis" because at one time we were the U.S. largest producers of pork products especially Sausage. And although we don't have the number of pork producers and brewerys as we once did...we still are the home of "Kahn's" and still have some great Craft Breweries. I think the best description of the Cincy / NKY area is it has a small town feel with all the big town amenities. Also, if you travel ( I did Stand Up for 20 years ) it's in close proximity to so many big cities. I loved it because I could do shows in Dayton, Columbus, Lexington, Louisville and Indianapolis and come back home that night after the show because they are all within about a 100 mile radius of Cincy. One other thing you briefly mentioned is our transit system...you were very generous with your comments. Frankly our transit system SUCKS ! I lived in Las Vegas for 3 years without a car...I never waited more than TEN minutes for a bus ! Yet, I worked a job in Elsmere, Ky. while living in Ludlow, Ky ( we're talking a 10 min. drive in your car ) it was a 9 -4 job...I had to leave my house by 7:45 am ...and I often wouldn't get home until nearly 6 pm because I had to transfer and the bus driver from Florence to Cincy was ALWAYS late getting to the terminal and I'd miss the connecting bus from the terminal to Ludlow. I've taken public transit all over the country and our transit sytem is by far the WORST ! Other than that Cincy is great...this area ( I'm including NKY ) is clean, the people are friendly. you have good schools, great healthcare and if you can't find something to do here you're within an hour, hour and a half drive of Indy, Dayton, Columbus, Lexington and Louisville...not to mention the Casinoes in Lawrenceburg and Miami Valley !
@@TeamSztanyo You're welcome...one more tip...there always seems to be gridlock on I-75 at Paddock Rd, exit and in NKY Buttermilk Pike exit. P.S. For those allergies, take a tablespoon of raw, locally sourced Honey ( there's a great little farm that has an aviary and sells fresh honey in West Chester ) every morning and some Flaxseed oil. Trust me, for years like clockwork every May / June ragweed allergy would kill me...then August / September I'd suffer from Hay Fever...I started doing this and I never get either anymore ! But you have to let it build up in your system and the honey has to be locally sourced. when you think about it, it makes perfect sense, the allergy is caused by pollen, allergy shots are small amounts of that pollen designed to make your body develop antibodies to that pollen. The locally sourced honey is made from that same pollen...so it's like a natural allrgy shot.
Addicted to Skyline Chilli and lived during the Big Red Machine, Cincinnati is Kahns hot dogs, breweries, Jeff Ruby and so much more! Live 60 miles from Cincinnati, but many great memories of the city.
WE moved to Cinci about 20 yrs ago and love it here. I agree with most of his points, but sports are not as big a deal as he is implying. FC Cinci won the Supporter Shield Cup which translates to winning the regular season so that was big. One thing we found weird was the clinging to HighSchool Identity. When meeting people for 1st time they always ask what HS we went to , In Northern Illinois no one cared about Highschool once you were an adult. A lot of adults walk around in Highschool team sports stuff. Weird.
We just use that to find out what part of town you're from. Each community has it's own mini culture so it's just a quick way to get to know you better. As far as wearing local high school gear, it's more to support the community.
People from Chicago city proper still ask what high others went to. Even though I went in the suburbs as well. But high schools are part of the conversations.
I moved to Covington in 1980, from Pittsburgh Pa. The winters in the Cincinnati area are a lot better than Pgh! However, the summers are a lot hotter. But being 64, I'll take that! I could never move back there. I love this area!
Just visited Cincinnati from Louisville and Cincy is SO BEAUTIFUL! The Waterfront, Downtown, the Hills, everything I wish Louisville was! Legal Weed, everyone seemed friendly and helpful, property taxes are lower.
really enjoyed this. born in cincy in 1954, moved to miami in 1957. but raised by cincy parents and grandparents and really love my values and midwestern roots. you are a cool guy.
Interesting. Just wanted to point out though, the longest days are in June and July. Not July and August. June 20 or 21 is the longest day, and the days get shorter either side of it.
Born in Cincy and spent my entire life here, and I guess I'm the outlier because I hate the chili, have zero interest in sports, and have never driven a car or felt the need to in any of the various suburbs I've lived in. The bus has never been more than a mile away from where I lived.
I’m eyeing a move to Cincinnati next year as an international student from Ghana. Where in Cincinnati do you think would be the best place to stay and start life as a young man?
This is a good video! Pretty darn spot on! Don’t worry about all the know it all haters in the comments. You’re not doing it for them anyway. Take care and keep grinding for our city, man.
I lived in Cincy for 11 yrs, and that summer humidity was brutal. It was the city where I began having allergy headaches. Became a Steelers fan while living in Cincy. I never became a Skyline chili junkie. Lived in Fairfield and Avondale. I remember a terrible snowfall, when GE AEBG closed for 1-2 days, which was a first in its' history.
Recording at newport on the levee in Kentucky, while talking about cinci, nice spot choice view from that area is great around sunset, he's not wrong about what he talks about, but crime is on the rise in the area but thats any where these days, as for covington,ky metioned in the comments, be careful in that area as well
My memories about the city are more positive than the reality of the present. It is now a blue city with disturbing crime rates, public schools are struggling, some corruption in politics, current sports teams are average.
I drove to Cincinnati and stayed overnight for the solar eclipse. The next day drove closer to Richmond, IN. So I did a little tour downtown and wanted to visit this Finlay Market. I got there after 4 and was closed. The surrounding neighborhood was straight outa an episode of Homocide. I'm from Baltimore and know a sketch neighborhood when I see one. Got the hell outa there toot sweet.
LOL, you were right ! The problem with this area IF you aren't familiar with it ( and I'm talking about Cincy and NKY ) is you can go 5 blocks and be in a neighborhood as safe as Ft. Knox, then the next 10 blocks is the "Hood" or "The Barrio". You need to make yourself aware of the area..because 90% of the crimes occur in about 5% of the city. When I lived in Las Vegas...if you were in Vegas "proper" ( very close to the strip ) NO CRIME happened because the casinos were ran by the Mob and if you came into that area and started shit...you'd end up buried in the desert where no one would ever find you. You didn't venture out to North Vegas at night because THAT was "Gang - Central". Basically, if you stay in the suburbs, it's very safe here...just stay away from certain areas like Downtown.
Missed one: "Cincinnati has a crime rate of 4593 per 100,000 people, which surpasses the national average by 97.6%, leading to one of the highest total crime rates in the United States."
Every city has really safe areas and not so safe areas. Stick to the better areas, especially at night. Don’t get involved with drugs, you will be fine.
Born and raised in the cincy area. Current council is doing its best to make it just like Chicago. After 50 years, I moved across the river and never regretted it.
I hate winter. I live up the road in Dayton which, by the way, is the birthplace of Martin Sheen. Regardless…Cincinnati is pretty cool city IMHO. I wish the city would have kept one of the five rail inclines for posterity’s sake. It was only within the last year or so I discovered this along with the abandoned subway. Now that I’m retired I have been making short trips to the Queen City. Keep it classy Cincinnati!!
@@TeamSztanyo single white latino guy. 57. Retired professional. I would be looking forward to the baseball and opera in Cincinnati. Old Architecture is another draw for me. What about Mount Adams?
Tyrone Power was from Cincy. Speaking of Springer, when he was part of Cincinnati City Council there was a motel called President's Inn in Northern KY that was a thinly veiled whorehouse. Jerry wrote a CHECK, on he and his Wife's JOINT ACCOUNT that BOUNCED...and he was bounced from city council. I did Stand Up for 20 years and one of my jokes i did year ago was "What's the difference between Jerry Springer and Ted Kennedy ?" "Jerry gets his women over the river !"
What will really make us stand out in the US is cleaning up that spaghetti mess of highway exits and entrances downtown and building out light rail finally. MetroMoves would have been completed this year… but the second best time to start is now
Not claiming Travis Kelce is wild! I just visited Cincy from Louosville and it seems like everything I wish Louisville was. Pretty Downtown, Great Waterfront, Legal Cannabis, everyone seemed friendly in Cincy, Newport, Covington, etc. Im ready to sell my 5 bed 3 full bath house in Louisville and Move there. Im a Casino Card dealer outside Louisville at Caesars and the Hard Rock dealers tood me their pay which is $5/hr higher. And Cincy is similar cost of living to Louisville. I have about $180,000 equity in my Louisville Home (technically Southern Indiana). I wanna sell and move to Cincinatti - City of 7 Hills
Moved to NYC at age 24, would never ever move back. The KENWOOD MALL is the best shopping now? Mall shopping? Why don't you do something to spiff up downtown? Cmon, it has been decades!
Spiff up Downtown??? It has been spiffed beyond spifftivity. Cincinnati is, what it is. A Midwestern city of 2 Million metro. It will never be as densely populated or have the same amenities as New York City. But the rent isn't $3500 for a 500 sqft apartment either. There's very little you can get in the positive from New York that you can't get in Cincinnati.
Because City Council is a bunch of imbeciles. Think about it...YEARS ago they lost money to Florence Mall, Swifton Commons etc. WHY? For the same reason no one shops downtown now....why would anyone PAY a war pension to park in crime ridden downtown Cincy...when they can park for FREE and shop at the same stores in a local mall ?
Good thing you left out Jerry Springer. We disowned him decades ago. If you’re into biking, hiking, kayaking, running, boating, camping, dogs, fishing and hunting, there is a whole lot to do here.
You might need a jacket in the Fall - my son visited from Tampa in October and thought 65 degrees was “freezing!” You get used to it and winters are not near as cold and snowy as they were decades ago.
As a 50 year Cincinnati resident, don’t move to Cincinnati. Move to one of the suburbs outside the 275 loop. I actually moved across the river and have never regretted it. The current government in cincy is doing its best to make it a little Chicago. So if you want peace, move outside the 275 belt and stay out of the city.
Doris Day is from Cincinnati! And Rosemary Clooney was George Clooney's aunt, not mother. A lot of movies are also being filmed here over the last decade with Cate Blanchet, Bruce Willis, and many others. But the winter is yuck yuck yuck.
Cincinatti at 39 degrees north. «The winter days will be short» Buhu! I have lived at 40 degrees north, and short winter days wasn’t a problem. Come to my place at 60 degrees north in Norway and try to complain about that😂
My fiance and I are thinking of moving there. We currently live in San Diego and young couples can't buy a home and start a family due to how expensive it is here. I am a middle school teacher and she is a nurse. I have 2 main questions if anyone can give their thoughts. 1) What is the quality of life for teachers and nurses (some places don't treat their public servants well). 2) Based on those two careers' salaries, can we buy a house in a good, fun neighborhood? Thnaks!
Yes, it is much cheaper to live in Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky. I am teacher who owns a nice house with one salary. We have four seasons which is nice. The drawback is you have better mild weather in San Diego. If you can't handle humidity or get allergies from pollen it could be an issue for you.
1. I have several friends who are teachers and almost all of them own their own homes. They have all been teaching for a while, so that does make a difference. Compared to where you're coming from this probably won't matter but housing prices have skyrocketed in the past few years. I would say it's still not comparable in price to the most popular areas of California, but it is less affordable than it used to be. 2. I don't, unfortunately, know any RNs so I can't tell you what that community is like. What I can tell you is we are spoiled for choice when it comes to medical centers and hospitals.
This fellow claims that winter days are shorter in Cincinnati. Actually, winter days are 75 minutes longer in Cincinnati than in NYC to its western position. Sunrise is 15’ later, but sunset is 90’ later.
Saying that Cincinnati was the butt of national jokes far overstates how much Cincinnati was on the nation's mind. A curious combination of inferiority and inflation!😂
Cincinnati is known for the riverfront's beauty, or at least it should be. - the Library, or it should be. - the University AND the medical education there - or it SHOULD be., also classical music. This video? Sports and food -SOME food. Disappointing. La Rosa's pizza, why the silence?

@@jesscuzican5153 Actually they both put cinnamon in their chili...and while both are good,,,I prefer Dixie Chili over them, Price Hill Chili is good too.Gold Star has a good flavor but for me both Gold Star and Skyline are too runny. I loved Empress too...but I think only one location is open. Gourmet Chili in Newport is good too....BUT it's worth going there for their breakfast special Bacon, Sausage, Ham or Goetta, 3 Eggs, a big serving of really good, crispy Hashbrowns, 2 pieces of buttered Toast..and I think it's like $7 ! They also serve one of the best Gyros you can find in around here.
Pretty limited description. I would suggest learning more about the city before trying to sell it. Where's the mention of the arts community? Music, Theater, art, these all have a significant presence here, one that is greater than you would expect in a city this size. What about the green spaces? We have an abundance of those. Every neighborhood has at least one, and there are several that are large enough to get lost in. Then there are the festivals, some large enough to pull in over a million people from around the country. The history here is pretty significant as well. As for famous people, I suggest you go to Wikipedia, the list is far more extensive than the ones you mentioned. Rosemary Clooney, by the way, is George Clooney's aunt. His parents are Nick and Nina Clooney; Nick Clooney is a highly respected former news anchor.
The public transportation in Cincinnati is very poor. That's due to the backwards attitude and strong segregation of the city. They killed the Green Light rail system in 1999 because the suburbanites didn't want "undesirables" in their neighborhood. The lack of inner city rail in Cincy is a joke. That's another thing, Cincy is a very divided city.
@@TeamSztanyo Great question. Western cities like Denver, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City are some examples off the top of my head. Don't get me wrong, I love my city. But I also had to learn to acknowledge its shortcomings. The truth was a very hard pill for me to swallow.
Rosemary Clooney is George’s AUNT not mom. We also can claim Sarah Jessica Parker and Doris Day as well as many others. Cincinnati is The biggest small town in America and we aren’t about labels. Show off on vacation but don’t do it here or you’re gonna be judged for it. Be real. We value that here instead. If you’re flashy we are going to think your credit poor. When I was a kid, we would have at least one snow that was big enough to build decent snowmen and go sledding. Snow would stick around for a few days and it would still be warm enough to go outside and play. I haven't seen that in the past 10 years.
Basically Cincinnati is home of mediocre sports teams, second rate colleges and a third rate airport. Our weather is better than many but too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. It's a great place to be FROM as in the Clooneys, Steven Spielberg, Roy Rogers and all four of my children and one grand child.
It is since it's been gentrified...wasn't always like this..
👆
Our plan is to come back to California to see family twice a year in July and Dec.-January in order to get out of the heat and a bit of the cold.
Good plan!
Thanks for sharing. Great additional insight!!
Weird.
this is true.
We just use that to find out what part of town you're from. Each community has it's own mini culture so it's just a quick way to get to know you better. As far as wearing local high school gear, it's more to support the community.
I noticed that pro basketball isn't covered. It's all college basketball.

The arts are very strong here in Cincinnati, such as the performing arts, visual arts, theatre, etc.
This was actually very helpful and detailed, easy to understand, as I am thinking about relocating to Cincinnati, yikes Jersey Girl in Ohio LOL
Interesting. Just wanted to point out though, the longest days are in June and July. Not July and August. June 20 or 21 is the longest day, and the days get shorter either side of it.
👍
Born in Cincy and spent my entire life here, and I guess I'm the outlier because I hate the chili, have zero interest in sports, and have never driven a car or felt the need to in any of the various suburbs I've lived in. The bus has never been more than a mile away from where I lived.
The bus system is great and getting better
The Metro sucks if you live out in Tri County.

Cincinnati is legendary for its humidity too. Lol! 😂

🌆
I used to live in Cincy, and the winters are brutal because of the windchill, aside from that it's a great place to live. I hope to move back soon.

WHY? My fiance and I are thinking of moving there. We currently live in San Diego and young couples can't buy a home and start a family due to how expensive it is here. I am a middle school teacher and she is a nurse. I have 2 main questions if anyone can give their thoughts.
1) What is the quality of life for teachers and nurses (some places don't treat their public servants well).
2) Based on those two careers' salaries, can we buy a house in a good, fun neighborhood?
Thnaks!
1) Solid
2) 100%

Yes, it is much cheaper to live in Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky. I am teacher who owns a nice house with one salary. We have four seasons which is nice. The drawback is you have better mild weather in San Diego. If you can't handle humidity or get allergies from pollen it could be an issue for you.

@@b__w_4565so what you're saying is you don't understand supply and demand. Got it.
In Cincinnati, nobody cares about where you went to college or what you do for a living. They only care about where you went to high school.
There is some truth to this. Since this is a city where people put down roots, it's a fairly quick an easy identifier for locals.

I shall double my efforts.
