🪃 Using clove oil to euthanize 4 of my baby fish.
Today I had to make the difficult, but responsible decision to euthanize four of the blue koi guppy babies. They all have curved spines (one is very severe, she looks like a boomerang) which is not good for 3 main reasons:
1. Their quality of life will suffer
2. They may pass on this gene to future generations
3. They may pass away unexpectedly, which will then cause the ammonia in the tank to rise
Note: this (euthanizing the fish) is a common practice among fish breeders. It’s called culling and it’s meant to elimate fish with untreatable traits that will harm future generations. Healthy fish are never killed.

I know an old classmate that kept his upside down ranchu for 11 years. That thing looked so done in life because it's already blind but my classmate still puts a tube in its mouth to feed. the fish just floats inside an upside down glass bottle inside the water tank and it looks so miserable. we just told him that he should let it go and stop its suffering. all he did was remove the glass bottle, the fish floats still swimming left some fish food and ate it but he observed that the fish stopped eating by the third day and died at midnight. It's even more bizzare because that classmate of mine fried and ate his dead ranchu.
I didn’t understand euthanasia until I had to do it for my own dog. She was suffering so much and my parents were prolonging her suffering. She was in so much pain, constantly crying and unable to get up to perform basic functions like eat/drink/go potty/etc. It was awful to see and eventually I had enough to convinced my parent to bring her in.
She went peacefully and painlessly, looking more at ease than she had in a long time. I felt like the worst shit on the planet letting her suffer like that because we couldn’t let her go.
Euthanasia is better than terminal/life long suffering. Especially for creatures that don’t understand why they are suffering in the first place
My family had to do this with our 15 year old blind dog. He was suffering. It was hard letting him go, but at least he’s no longer in pain.

When any creature is in pain like that, euthanasia is the best way to go imo. A family friend had to euthanize their dog because he was suffering from dog dementia and arthritis. He was a sweet dog, but he had to pass on.

My mom had these crooked spine guppies before. They actually ended up living pretty long. I mean we didn’t really know how uncomfortable those fishes were but they lived almost as long as other healthy guppies.
It doesn't affect the lifespan but it is pretty uncomfortable

i had a girl named Lilly that was all curvy. bought her from a store and she ended up being the oldest guppy out of all my other ones. She was the only guppy ive cried over.

I remember as a little kid, one of my aunts had a huge tank where she let her guppies breed over the course of several years. I brought it up to her that some were in a complete “L” shape by the end and many looked majorly deformed, she denied it completely. No idea what happened to them all in the end. It’s nice to see someone care about the quality and breeding standards. So glad your channel exists

This is so helpful. I had to watch my last betta die because I had no idea what to do and none of the tips I found online were helping him, hospital tank , medicated water, etc. I'd wished at the time I had a way to help him. I hope I don't need this in future, but I am SO glad to know now.

Most people would flush them or just let them suffocate in the air, but I am proud that you let them go the least harmless way
So I have a kind of funny story to tell you. So once I had a loach that wasn’t moving even when we fed and picked it up so we assumed it was dead so we brought it to the toilet where it swam around so we took it out. Unfortunately the health probs that made it look dead killed it a few hours later

Personally I’ve never done this to my baby guppies. They can survive with curvy spine. I don’t think they need to be killed…😢 Just need a little bit of attention when you feed them which is checking they eat properly. Even some of curvy spine guppy can swim better and better as they grow up.
@@JJ-mz6yu I think she was concerned about them passing down that deformity to offspring, so euthanasia was the most logical solution. It is unfortunate that they got those defects though...

I’m of the belief that regardless of our reasonings, we should minimized pain done to any animal.

That being said, recent studies have shown that stimulation of the nociceptors in fish causes the pain signals to not only reach the hindbrain and brainstem as it would in organisms such as invertebrates that don't experience conscious pain, but also reaching the frontal lobe responsible for conscious thought. Currently this is one of the best and simplest ways to determine if an organism is capable of experiencing the conscious sensation of pain, aka "suffering".
Each species brain is different, so no other species will experience pain in the EXACT same way as another, but many species, including species of fish, are definitely capable of conscious suffering.

I have scoliosis and even though it's "treated" it hurts so much.
I can't imagine how much pain these fish must feel, mostly because fish feel pain differently than humans but still.

With there degree of bendy ness they may not ahve had a bad life but the consern is if any of them turn out female there is no stoping them replicateing the bad genitics unlike a male that cna be put in a tank with no females. The main way they can be endangered is if they are at more than a 45° bend or when females are trying to give birth with a downwards bend
Fish cannot psychologically feel pain. When you see a fish react to an injury it’s behavioral response to stimuli cannot be interpreted as what we know to be pain.

Thank you for doing this and giving them peace. In my experience if you don’t euthanize fish with spinal deformities like these, which I’ve seen in many beta fry, they suffer and die naturally on their own after a short time. It’s best to get them their peace sooner than that. I once watched one of my girls suffer in stress for weeks before she passed. Wouldn’t wish that on any aquarium keeper. I was thinking there was something I could do to make her comfortable and give her a full life, I gave her many accommodations to help, but there really is nothing you can do except put them out of their misery in these cases.
