This is a very quiet performance by Laura Wright who has a much stronger voice than this performance would suggest and then having that cock rhyming over it was unnecessary and smacks of a token effort that is trying too hard at multiculturalism (when the lyrics of the song cover that already). England should have had Laura Wright sing the headline version but instead they got Paloma Faith who fucking butchered it by singing it like it was a James Bond theme tune. It may be a long time before Hayley Westenra's performance is bettered - absolutely solid round smooth powerful voice. Anyone who cares - I'm not a kiwi but I know good vocals when I hear them.
I don't know why but these entertaining openings just feel wrong...out of place somehow. Loads of kids, glamour that seems more for the Palladium, rap???, dramatic visuals?...no.. it feels like someone has stuck the beginning of an entirely different show right before the rugby! I don't know what I would enjoy seeing instead...perhaps older / retired famous players? I really don't know but I just know this is great in its own way but just not for the beginning of Rugby / Football stuff. And having some opera singer warbling the anthem for a team seems really wrong. I think it should be the players (for any sport that has the anthem played) that should be absolutely singing out loud and proud! That would be a brilliant and appropriate beginning to any of these things. I know others will disagree because they like the entertainment but for me it just feels like a royal variety performance and would be great as that. Not for big tough bloke sport stuff. Just feels out of place.:/
