  • An analog tv shutdown may be among the most bizarre pieces of lost Japanese media. Perhaps it's the analog horror element to it. Maybe it's the finality of it... with some 90's & early 2000's nostalgia mixed in.
    What exactly makes Nickelodeon Japan's final signoff footage a renowned tv shutdown? One that spawned a search 14 years in the making for footage that may not even exist. Let's find out.
    (Btw, I was in the process of moving while making this video; apologies for the varying audio quality ^^; )

    I just find it wonderful to think about the fact that some Japanese kids adored Nickelodeon and grew up on dubbed Western animation the same way I gravitated towards 90’s anime dubs as a kid.

    You know Sakurita/Alex? This video about Nickelodeon’s multiple lost media shutdowns in Japan has brought over me a nostalgic memory of when Channel 19, El Salvador’s (my country of origin) open tv Nickelodeon, shut down back in 2012. Luckily the final broadcast was recorded and can be easily found on RUclips. It didn’t end in the abrupt, alleged, way Japan’s Nickelodeon did and it was rather a sorrowful goodbye with Big Time Rush’s “Worldwide” song playing on the background as a message was displayed on the screen before cutting to a final countdown that started with 10. Thus, followed by a “thank you” and then cutting to a video with the national anthem playing.
    It might not be precisely “lost media related”, although channel 19 had its own programming and unique bumpers as well that as lost media on their own, but I wanted to point this out as something that I remembered while watching your video, as someone who grew up watching channel 19.
    Great video btw! 😃

    The irony of MLAATR being dubbed into Japanese when it’s inspired by anime. Heck Jenny’s va is Japanese so she was actually speaking in Japanese during that episode where she got stuck speaking it because she lost her English language disk in Japan. I need to find that one in Japanese to see if they have her speaking English instead.

    • @CassiusStelar
      @CassiusStelar 11 месяцев назад +22

      I've heard of other stuff kind of like that where a character who often speaks in a foreign language in an English TV show either has that quirk stripped out or has that bilingual bonus flipped in the country the character comes from.
      But in one video game instance it completely scrambled across the several dubbed localizations. With each version having a different language in a nice enclosed loop

    Reminds me of the infamous Qubo shutdown hoax (in which several characters from Qubo's shows had their faces blown up). In reality, Qubo simply shut down during the airing of an episode of Franklin the Turtle.

    • @Code7Unltd
      @Code7Unltd 5 месяцев назад +3

      I recall that Grit was a last-second stand-in until CourtTV took Qubo's broadcast space. It kept going for a short time for Vizio Watchfree users.
      When that Vizio stream shut down, it cut off a Inspector Gadget episode (the black screen would hang for a short while thereafter as the stream was preparing to be terminated) and spelt the end of Qubo.

    You're absolutely right about the color bars. I worked in a station and there's really no reason there would be a fade in. Fades are handled by technical directors, but since this was all prepackaged material it wasn't handled by a TD, at least not to that extent. There's a high chance it was another crew members feeding the packages. That's how most non-live material is played. When I worked there they still used tapes in large towers and just switched between them in real time. When they sign off its immediately cut.

    I feel that the late 2000s were a rough time for these kids' channels like Nick and CN. If the American versions of these channels weren't doing so well, I can imagine that the international versions did worse. Plus, given that foreign stuff usually doesn't really connect with younger kids most of the time, I feel that Nick Japan was doomed to fail eventually. But to its credit, Nick as a whole didn't suffer as much as CN during this time. Remember CN Real?

    • @Ziko577
      @Ziko577 11 месяцев назад +18

      That may be due to the fact that an economic downturn was going on then plus we also had a lot of media consolidation around that time too. CN pivoted toward live action stuff and Nick was just lost in what to do with themselves for a while. The former was a huge mistake as we know in hindsight.

    • @Jhud69
      @Jhud69 11 месяцев назад +17

      I wouldn't be so sure that international versions did worse necessarily. I mean we got Nickeleodeon in Poland in 2008 and I remember CN and Jetix were still quite big here around the time. CN Real was never a thing here even. I think the reason might be because, unlike Japan (and the US/Canada/France etc), we don't have a huge production of content for kids. What's there is... very vintage and doesn't appeal to most kids anymore (nor did back then), and if it does it's for very small children. There is literally no other choice for kids here than to watch western shows on western import kid's channels aside from random cartoons on normal TV channels in the morning or in the evening before "sleeptime". I'm sure we aren't alone in this. Or at least I hope Poland is not the only country whose local popular media production is in shambles lol
      As a tangent trivia: we never got Adult Swim, CN used to turn into T.C.M. (Turner Classic Movies) channel at night. Our Toonami block also didn't air anime at all but mostly Marvel and DC series, most likely because most anime here doesn't get dubbed and thus has no place on children's channels. Some popular anime got dubbed like Naruto etc but they'd air as normal cartoons, but to watch Death Note or FMA you'd have to turn to another channel at 9PM for subbed anime.

      "...foreign stuff usually doesn't really connect with younger kids most of the time..." - wrong! Unless the country already has a huge domestic cartoon production(like the US, Japan and Korea) foreign cartoons actually would be a go to for the kids. We grew up with Disney, Nickelodeon, Jetix and others and it connected really well despite being from another country and culture. Children don't really care if the culture on screen is foreign or entirelly made up they just want to have fun watching it!

    • @Ziko577
      @Ziko577 11 месяцев назад +3

      @@greatwave2480 That's very true. I grew up in a time where anime was everywhere on every other channel and that was before streaming took off a decade ago. Not all of it was good plus much of it had censorship or was localized to remove a lot of the Japanese elements but nowadays, that's a non-issue given how accepted it is.

    - 1st footage of the shutdown looks real, it probably came from a provider that shutdown the channel before the official date and time of the closure. Just because there are test bars it doesn't mean that it's analog. Also, just because there is an MTV logo, it doesn't mean that it isn't a cross-network promotion.
    - 2nd footage of the shutdown is definitely fake, test card is superimposed OVER the logo.
    - 3rd footage: if you look frame by frame at the point when image is getting replaced by the error, you can actually see it loading. Looks real to me.
    P.S. Can you please provide links in the description of all shutdown footage used during this video?

    Channel shutdowns and transitions to a new image have always fascinated me. Last month the transition of Fox Kids to Jetix in Latin America was finally found. Many of us have fond memories of that channel and as the comments on that video have expressed, it's a real treasure to have that footage. For any fellow Latino that grew up with it and wasn't aware of this, the channel Cosas de mi baúl has the video.
    I couldn't help but notice ChalkZone in that list you showed. A couple years ago I randomly remembered it and felt like rewatching the Latino dub to remember the good old times, only to find out it has missing episodes. It's always an odd feeling when something you watched on TV as a child can no longer be watched. I hope the remaining episodes are still around just waiting to be found.

    My father used to work in a TV/Radio station years ago. When I was young, I get to witness the operations in TV consoles operators. I wont reveal what station or location on this comment but I hope I can give a little of insights about this. When the main HQ made an instruction that it's gonna shutdown soon, operators can just queue in some footages randomly or redirect some feeds somewhere (alternate source). Operators only need to watchout for "advertisements" and note them if they are broadcasted or not... other than that any footages shown wont matter during shutdown. Operators can choose approved alternate footages or stream from the management. Probably the operators just "let it end" whatever what's left on their queue.
    In the end of the day, they ended thier contract.. wrap things up. Management can move on for other projects.

    I guess it sucks that tv channels doesn't feel like they need to broadcast even a short clip saying good bye or something. A few months ago DisneyXD was killed in latinamerica, but the signal didn't actually died, they just replaced it, and the cut was kinda abrupt, it was very different for every cable company and every country. Some people was still able to watch DisneyXD months after the official shutdown. I guess it will be just like that when the new AdultSwimLA channel replace the TruTV channel.
    I didn't know how much I needed your content, great vid.

      @@punpunpun-cd4hz ocarina of time is the first 3d zelda game, released in 1998. hero of time is the nickname for link, protagonist, since in the series the protagonist is always a young boy named link - but not necessarily the same boy. hero of time is something he was called in the game but has also come to identify that specific link who was protagonist of 4 legend of zelda games total.
      the game itself is just called 時のオカリナ in japan with the same ゼルダの伝説 prefix all the games have (to mt knowledge), and it's probably the most universally acclaimed of the games until breath of the wild and its sequel tears of the kingdom in 2017 and this year respectively altho of course beloved as it is it's still a bit dated at this point
