যেখানেই পেয়েছে জনপদ, সেখানেই ঘটেছে দখল ও দূষণ।
আর এই দখল ও দূষণের কারণে অস্তিত্ব হারাতে বসেছে কুষ্টিয়ার ছোট বড় নদীগুলো। কুষ্টিয়ার প্রায় সব বর্জই ফেলা হচ্ছে নদীগুলোতে। এর প্রভাব পড়ছে নদী পাড়ের বিস্তীর্ণ এলাকাজুড়ে। এতে নাব্যতা হারাচ্ছে নদী। হুমকির মুখে পড়েছে পরিবেশ ও জীববৈচিত্র। দফায় দফায় দখলে

একসময়ের খরস্রোতা নদীগুলো হারিয়েছে তার পুরোনো যৌবন। প্রবাহ না থাকায় কুষ্টিয়াঞ্চলের অধিকাংশ নদী এখন মরা খাল। নদীগুলো পুনরুদ্ধারের দাবী জানিয়েছে কুষ্টিয়াবাসী।
পদ্মা,গড়াই,হিসনা,কুমারসহ ছোট-বড় প্রায় ৮ টি নদী রয়েছে এই কুষ্টিয়া জেলায়। নদীকে কেন্দ্র করে উর্বর তীরবর্তীতে গড়ে উঠেছে অনেক জনপদ।
কিন্তু দিনে দিনে একসময়ের উচ্ছ্বল এই নদী দূষণ ও দখলে অস্তিত্ব হারাচ্ছে। নদীগুলো এখন ভয়াবহ দুষণের কবলে পড়েছে।
অন্যদিকে যে যেভাবে পেরেছে নদী দখল করে গড়েছেন অবৈধ স্থাপনা। আবার অনেকেই নদী দখল করে করছেন মাছ চাষ।
শহরের প্রায় সব বর্জই ফেলা হচ্ছে নদীতে। আর শিল্প এলাকার তাত শিল্পের কেমিকেল মিছ্রিত বিষ নদীতে গড়িয়ে দেয়া হচ্ছে।
এদিকে প্রবাহ না থাকায় এখন দেখে আর বোঝার উপায় নেই, একসময় এখানে বড় বড় নৌকা, লঞ্চ চলতো এই নদীগুলোতে।
সরকারি হিসাবে কুষ্টিয়া জেলায় নদ-নদী ও খাল-বিল দখলকারীর সংখ্যা প্রায় ৩ হাজার।
নদীগুলো দখল ও দূষণের হাত থেকে রক্ষা করতে দ্রুত পদক্ষেপ নেওয়ার দাবী স্থানীয়দের।

Kushtia residents have demanded the restoration of the rivers.There are small and big rivers including Padma, Gorai, Hisna, Kumar in this Kushtia district. Many settlements have developed on the fertile banks of the river.
But day by day this once overflowing river is losing its existence due to pollution and occupation. The rivers are now in the grip of terrible pollution.
On the other hand, he has occupied the river in any way he can and built illegal establishments. Again many are occupying the river and cultivating fish.
Almost all the waste of the city is being dumped in the river.
And the chemicals mixed in the industrial area are being dumped in the river.
Meanwhile, as there is no flow, there is no way to see and understand now, once there were big boats, launches running on these rivers.
According to the government, the number of occupiers of rivers and canals in Kushtia district is about 3 thousand.
The locals demanded immediate action to protect the rivers from encroachment and pollution.
