He's just naming dudes from the east coast. Get outta here Kendrick would bury these fools, and I'm 49 and like both sides of the states. Dude is crazy!!!
Actually, most of the rappers he listed would bury Kendrick. Yeah, there's some rappers that Kendrick would eviscerate like J. Cole and Dave East for example.
Fat joe is absolutely over kendrick. Kendrick sounds like a prepubescent little boy. I don't care how technical of a rapper you are, if your voice is unlistenable to me it just a waste. Joe not only has one of the best most clear voices in hip hop but also has some of the hardest underground real hip hop tracks of all time, and let's not speak on longevity .He is so badly underrated as a rapper that it's disgusting, and that's only because he had to spit next to most of everyone's top 5s doa Joe is a monster when he is on his boom bap shit. Let's not forget.
I’m also an "old head" and often share what Aries thinks in many ways. Rap has always been about skills first. But with that said, the art form is constantly evolving. Something that sounded cutting edge and catchy +15 years ago, doesn't necessarily do it today. During the golden era, if a MC had a boombap flow and 1-2 bar set up with a clever punchline, that was enough to be considered great. Kendrick already mastered that in his early days, but if you listen to what Kendrick does today, with delivery, double entendres, storytelling and metaphors (not in occasional bars, but whole projects) he is a superior poet compared to most of the names that Aries rattled off. What characterizes a talented lyricist is also the ability to be versatile, and I honestly can't think of a worse example than Canibus. He has sounded exactly the same since day 1 and the only interesting thing about him was the Rip The Jacker album because Stoupe who produced it leveled it sonically.
In all these hiphop debates, you must come to a definition of which criteria are decisive factors. Discography is something that many "old heads" don't look at today. Kendrick has released TPAB which is literally the Illmatic of our time. If we just looking at technical skills then we might as well all listen to battle rap. Btw, Kendrick is a mf at spitting too, but to say Dot doesn't have word play, metaphors etc, just shows ignorance.
Canibus may have low popularity but when it comes to pure punchlines and wordplay he's miles above many people My sperm will scramble the eggs in a woman's ovaries I can list plenty but vocabulary and punchlines canibus is ahead of so many people So is Big L and Cassidy Kendrick isn't really known for his punchlines He's more known for tight production and screenplay level writing and concepts I hear Aries Spears argument When it comes to pure rap spitting
Same reason why he picked J Cole over Kendrick and why some people think Cole is better it's because Cole has that traditional rap basics covered especially in wordplay punchlines and storytelling Kendrick may throw of some people with his voice switches and effects
@@Swimthenatator A real hiphop fan knows canibus, as one of purists. I loved 2000 B.C, and like I said, Rip the Jacker. I was even convinced at one point that he would had eaten Em in a beef, when all that was going on. But as time went on, it became more and more obvious that he was severely limited in his subject matters. He recycled verses over and over, never switched up his flow. His content from 08 and beyond he rapped about the cosmos and galaxies. When you additionaly only feed punchlines without an actual set-up, the effect also diminishes. Hiphop, like any other art form, is constantly evolving. If you look at other pure spitters, like Crooked, Chino XL, Royce & Em just to name a few, who elevated 90s boombap and started to challenge flow and twist rhyme structures in and out. Therefore, Canibus is a terrible example to even mention by Aries as his career and most certainly hunger, has not existed for +15 years. And speaking of Big L, he was one of the most gifted rappers to ever pick up a microphone. He was ahead of his time. So I agree with you there.
@@Swimthenatator Further on kendrick, it feels like people think his arsenal is just storytelling, and even if that was true, there are few who can write dramatic twists with climax and do it in double time format as he has done and continues to do to this day. I'm not saying you're saying this, I'm talking about the general attitude towards Kendrick. Kendrick is a top tier lyricist, he is held in high regard by other lyricists who have mastered the art form as well. His pure spitting times was mostly during the Black Hippies and Section 80 era. He has moved on from that and simply doesn’t focus on it. But there are plenty of punchlines and word play in his catalog if you are receptive to it. Euphoria for example is a 6 minute display of it (while maintaining a common thread). Or when he stomps the Rigamortus track. Sometimes it’s hard for old heads to grasp that there are rappers who surpass "the golden era". Funny thing is, that it's not even something strange, it's called development. I was one of them, until I started listening to Kendrick for real. It's perfectly fine to having subjective opinions if Kendrick isn’t Aries' cup of tea. But it’s hard to take him seriously when he starts rattling off a bunch of half-assed N.Y rappers as examples.
At least the streets play East...NEVER HEARD NO ONE play that BOZO Kendrick 😂😂😂😂....y'all will NEVER count in these Hip Hop debates unless you from the Mecca....stop trying
If you ever want to know what East Coast Bias sounds like... Ths is the PERFECT example. For him to disrespect Ice Cube, Not even mention Outkast? Completely Krazy. I actually agree more with Vlad here.
LL held his own against eminem in that song. He was dope. Now I wont say Jay Z embarrassed himself in "Renegade" but eminem clearly left him in the dust.
Busta is one of my favorite rappers ever he is in my top 15 Greatest rappers list of all time, he is not better than Kendrick. However he is super underrated and his visuals him and Missy were some of the best ever as well.
Plus we all already know Aries is NYC biased 😂 and tbh he probably aint actually listened to more than 2 minutes of any Kendrick Lamar sht anyway, if he thinks it’s all absent of “lyricism! metaphors! punchlines!” like he said
And that Durant mean his opinion is above debate. Garbage opinions exist. I could say, “Michael Jordan is the worst basketball player ever”. Just because it’s an opinion doesn’t mean it can’t be stupid
@@blinggzillatv right it can be stupid and that opens up a forum for debate. The thing is if you say "this and that" is your opinion im gonna ask you why you think that. Thats where the debate comes in. for my, I wanna know why you think what you think. for Aries saying ice cube is no good for a top 20. Im gonna ask why then spit off some of his lyrics an ask you are these good. Even in opinion you can be wrong so if he says MC Shan had better lyrics then cube then you better come with some examples why. From that it can be clear whats BS and whats not. No question, Aries never even bothered to TRY to listen to more than a minute of any his sht When he implied he has no “lyricism, metaphors, punchlines” it was pretty clear he just groups Kendrick Lamar with every other “new age rapper” (his words)
As a dude who grew up on the west coast I can honestly say I listened to all those rappers he has mentioned. Canibus in his prime was so damn raw. He helped birth alot of these current rappers put now. His music wasn't for everyone just like Kendrick music not everyone is going to feel. End of the day, listen to whoever you connect with.
LL Cool J is the first and only rap artist to have hits in 5 decades. No other rapper is coming close to that. We're in the Michael Jackson atmosphere, we're in the Elton John atmosphere, We're in the Stevie Wonder atmosphere. Do you know how long Kendrick would have to be in the game to achieve that title, I just don't see it👀
He named all East Coast artists. Ice Cube dropped arguably the biggest diss record of all time with No Vaseline and also just had the west coast lit right after Death Row. So Vlad, while he’s got an ego and is wrong sometimes, he needed to call out Aries Spears on this. Y’all can’t keep saying Vlad’s ego is an excuse for the BS people in interviews be saying.
For real. Like people gotta know the difference between being a pioneer and being the greatest. Krs help build hip hop up but there's tons that took what he did and elevated it to higher levels. People don't want to accept that
Vlad’s questioning of Black Thought being top 20 in any capacity, and then doubling down on that audacity by using “the Roots’ body of work” as a reference for that point is crazy to me. Illadelh Halflife and Things Fall Apart just by themselves cement him as one of the greatest lyricists of all time and having one of the smoothest flows ever. Not to mention tons of great verses on Roots albums after that point as well as guest features where he bodies anyone on a track. I have him as second all time to Nas, and I get it if someone doesn’t want to rank him as top 5, or even top 10 given different tastes, but not top 20 makes me question that person’s fundamental understanding of lyricism and the mechanics of rhyming. Also I love Aries’ list - it shows a panoramic appreciation for the art of MCing and the various pen games in hip-hop history.
Yeah. He completely lost me with that. I actually appreciate & admire The Roots' catalogue more as I get older. As far as the 2000s or 2010s, Rising Down & Game Theory I dug alot.

Fat Joe > Kendrick.
Is either musical ignorance or trolling. This conversation is very unserious.
Fat joe is absolutely over kendrick. Kendrick sounds like a prepubescent little boy. I don't care how technical of a rapper you are, if your voice is unlistenable to me it just a waste. Joe not only has one of the best most clear voices in hip hop but also has some of the hardest underground real hip hop tracks of all time, and let's not speak on longevity .He is so badly underrated as a rapper that it's disgusting, and that's only because he had to spit next to most of everyone's top 5s doa
Joe is a monster when he is on his boom bap shit. Let's not forget.
@mickyward3716 Kendrick is a goat, go cry about it 😂😂
It’s musical ignorance
Fat Joe saved that new Mary J Blige album
@@mickyward3716 You’re the same age as Aries, right ?
Canibus may have low popularity but when it comes to pure punchlines and wordplay he's miles above many people
My sperm will scramble the eggs in a woman's ovaries
I can list plenty but vocabulary and punchlines canibus is ahead of so many people
So is Big L and Cassidy
Kendrick isn't really known for his punchlines
He's more known for tight production and screenplay level writing and concepts
I hear Aries Spears argument
When it comes to pure rap spitting
Same reason why he picked J Cole over Kendrick and why some people think Cole is better it's because Cole has that traditional rap basics covered especially in wordplay punchlines and storytelling
Kendrick may throw of some people with his voice switches and effects

@@jackstar6018 😂Right! Aries didn't even scratch the surface. Redman, Das Efx, Slick Rick, DMX, Kool G. Rap, Del the Funky Homosapien, Lauryn Hill, Guru, I could be here all night! Also, Vlad named Eazy E. directly after Ice Cube as a "gotcha moment" for Aries. Vlad was hoping Aries would take the bait and say yes to Eazy, so Vlad could say "Ha, ha! Cube wrote his lyrics!" But of course, Aries wasn't having it. Vlad is hilariously tone deaf to the entire black experience. There is nobody on this earth who would put Eazy E. in their top 20 greatest rappers list.
Nothing but east coast bias right there Kendrick will destroy all them rappers like he did drake 😂
@@omarestrada8901 Kendrick can’t even handle Papoose and Big Sean. Drake is his only match! 😂
@@красивыекусочки Agreed. Above poster is clearly insane.
I’m a West Coast/Cali guy, but I just haven’t been able to get into Kendrick’s music. I grew up on Cube, NWA, Quik, Kane, Rakim, LL, etc…I’m not sure why I don’t like his music too much but he wouldn’t be in my top 20 either.
I’m pretty bi-coastal (been around the East and the West). Never heard anyone turn on any Kendrick. Whether it’s the older or younger generation.
You barely hear any Nas, Doom, Wu, Rakeem.... some greats aren't radio friendly. Flo-rida gets more play than Pac
