I actually LOOOVE the angst of a separated couple but only when there is a legit reason for it. Not some stupid-ass misunderstanding that could be solved in in 2 mins. if someone just did that thing that most humans do: You know, TALK. Unpopular opinion but, as much as I love the Shadowhunter books, the love triangle in TID pissed the crap out of me. And to make things worse, it's actually a major plot point in the trilogy (unlike the one in TMI, that was cliche AF but once you look back, it barely matters in the scope of the 6 books). At least I'm forever grateful for the two times when Tessa gets called out.
I've just finished the winner's crime (I read it all in one day) and now I don't know what to do with myself. The FEELINGS. Kestrel and Arin's angst is everything to me.
When you mentioned the last trope I was just looking at the shelf to see whether you will take out the book or not and I was right hahah!! I agree about it being the best book in the series, THE TENSION IS SO GOOD MAN.
If you liked The Infernal Devices, The Dark Artifices is really amazing. I find most people who liked those don't love The Mortal Instruments, but TDA is amazing.
But in terms of instalove, I think Robin Hobb is the only person who has ever done it well in my opinion, because of the way she develops the relationship, specifically in the Rainwilds Chroncles
Literally the only time I ever like love triangles is when it either ends in polyamory (like in Wicked Lovely or Sense8) or it clearly should be polyamory (like in Infernal Devices)
Well it would have been, but that wasn't really possible, what with what happened, and also the time period. CC is definitely setting up a poly relationship in her current series though.
I normally kind of hate the "every main character is the best in the world at what they do" type thing but I didn't mind it in The Final Empire, especially with Kelsier, because his awesomeness was pretty believeable somehow. In the later books it did start to bother me, because it kind of lowered the stakes at one point (plus I didn't like the whole Elend thing).
The only love triangle that I've been okay with was the one in the Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce (which is the first series under the Tortall banner). And what made it so great was the fact that AT NO POINT did any of them let it come between their individual friendships with each other. They all stayed friends the entire time, there was no jealousy or bitterness or unnecessary drama---it was just so completely understated, and never overtook the story at all. Hell, half the time you'd almost forget there was even a love triangle, because it was always just such a non-issue to the characters themselves. I don't want to say too much more, or give any specifics of how it played out in an attempt to avoid spoilers, but it was actually super refreshing to see this trope (which I usually hate) played out in this way. And the most amazing thing is that this series was published in the 80s!!!!! There's a few things that are now dated about the series, but they're also shockingly progressive in other ways. Highly recommend this author in general. :)
Okay. Laini Taylor. Daughter of Smoke and Bone might be my favorite trilogy of life.... and yup. 100% agree with you. I also didn’t mind the Strange the Dreamer insta love. Hmm. Maybe I’m just am here for whatever Laini Taylor wants to throw my way. :)
I actually kind of enjoy love triangles but the times I actively dislike the triangles is when the MC clearly chooses one of the contenders but the author keeps the other one on for the sole sake of keeping tension in the book. (I.e twilight)
I haven't read Cassandra Clare in a few years, and probably won't again but I definitely agree with you about the characters and relationships in the Infernal Devices trilogy. Also, I want to re-read Winter's Curse because I really loved it and that way I can finally move on to reading Winner's Crime and Winner's Kiss and hearing you talk about it had made.e so excited to get to it! 😄
100% agree with Daughter of Smoke and Bone. For some reason, the insta love is just fine in it. I also really didn't like it in Strange the Dreamer. I also totally agree with The Infernal Devices love triangle. The only love triangle I've encountered to date that I actually loved.
I don’t think I have ever read anything with insta-love but I’m about to listen to Daughter of Smoke and Bone as soon as I get it from Overdrive. I 100% agree with the love triangle in The Infernal Devices! I’m wondering if you have ever encountered the “We can’t be together because it’s too dangerous” trope because there’s nothing that I loath more in a book. It makes me roll my eyes into another dimension.
I dunno if it counts but I liked the love interest is missing in the second book trope for New Moon was pretty good but the reason I say I dunno if it counts is that the big issue with the love interest being missing in the second book is that its overdone for romance based YA and well, New Moon was the one that kinda popularised it and it happened before it was overdone, so.
Same about the insta-love in daughter of smoke and bone. It's the only insta-love I forgive for some reason, but it is also the only thing that kept me from giving 5 stars to that book.
I fully agree that DOSAB is instalove, but I will forgive Laini Taylor anything 😂😍 Ha TID is the whole world’s love triangle exception 😂 I actually really like the love interests being separated - though only if it’s for a good reason! - it’s in Days of Blood and Starlight too, and I just really think it makes you root for the couple more!
SPOILERS FOR THE DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE TRILOGY!!!! YES ABOUT THE DOSAB INSTA-LOVE! It's the only series where I forgive and actually actively enjoy an insta-love romance, but I don't like it when people use the excuse of "oh Akiva and Madrigal were already in love so it's not really insta-love." But like...Akiva and Madrigal was insta-love as well. She saved his life and then he was in love with her...like yeah. But still. The ONLY insta-love romance I have actually enjoyed.
I have the same problem with NA, and not even Maybe Someday was enjoyable for me. My one exception is the Stage Dive series, both the sinopsis and the covers are cringe worthy but I was gladly surpised by how fun some of the books are.
Oh my god, finally someone says it - DoSaB is instalove no matter how you look at it! People always ignore that. But either way, it's good instalove. I mean kinda annoying but good lol
If *Strange the Dreamer* 's second half (AKA: when the romance nation attacked) was as good as the first half that book would've gotten a 4.5 from me, but instead I gave it a 3. So sad. I love Lazlo to bits though so I'll still be reading the second book and praying it gets better
@Roxana Rahgoshay the ending had me crying. Like I'm not even joking. I had to gather myself before going into my living room and interacting with family. I was surprised by how much I care for each character, and how I actually enjoyed the love triangle. Great read, 4 stars
I kind of live for you throwing shade at the instalove in strange the dreamer because that's what made that book so dissatisfying for me (I liked other aspects of it but the instalove...no thank you).
Ahhh I loved the Anita Blake series. I think I got up to book 11 before I stopped reading. Recently I went to read a sneak peek of the latest one and Anita was in bed with like five wolves and vampires and I was like...whoa, Anita. The series has changed a bit, lol.
This might be a dumb question so feel free to ignore it since I'll try to look it up myself but what's the different between "young" adult and "new" adult? Or like... what exactly does "new" adult tend to do that you dislike compared to "young" adult and simply "adult" books? :o More on subject, I'm not big on instalove or fast paced romance but Scarlet and Wolf in TLCs?? Omg so good... So good.
new adult are books where the protagonist is aged 18-25 (max 30), or the book is aimed at readers of that age. New adult can also include more graphic sex, language, violence and mature themes
I’d highly recommend looking into Elliot Wake - he’s a trans male who has published a few new adult novels that are brilliant. My particular favourite is Cam Girl. There a bit out of the box as there’s plenty of relevant social commentary if your in the mood for that
why dont you wanna fall down the cassie hole? i have a lot of fun down here the dark artifices is actually inclusive and good and isjcjsicnd its another love triangle i like sixjisicd
I love the first Anita Blake books, but as you've mentioned, I heard they get pretty bad. Which book would you recommend DNF-ing on? Lol. I think I've read until Obsidian Butterfly. Read the Gentry series and I loved the first books, but they digress as the series goes on. Trying to avoid it with Anita.
Thanks! I don’t mind the sexual content so much as Anita sleeping with so many people, I forget all the names, and then the characters and plot suffer. I feel like this happened with the Merry Gentry series. The first books were fascinating, but everything became about sex for plot fulfillment after about four books in.
I think I made it to like 10 or 11. I was pretty disappointed. I have nothing against erotica or steamy romances. I was just bummed cuz it started as an UF and that's what I wanted from those characters. Sure, throw in a love scene every now and then. But when it became clear that's what the whole story was gonna be, I tossed in the towel.
It’s not really spoilers for Infernal Devices, but if you like to go mostly blind into series don’t read any further! I’m working through the Infernal Devices now. And I specifically picked them up because you mentioned them as a poly OTP (head cannon) I just finished the second one and taking a break before I get into the third cause I know I’m not going to be satisfied. I keep finding lines that make me so mad cause I feel like it’s Clare teasing the reader on a poly relationship. At one point Will says (maybe a little inebriated) “oh great, we’re all together now” Overall, I don’t like Clare’s work. Not a fan of her writing or her need to put quotes of great work in each of her chapters. The world is interesting but there’s just something missing for me. I strictly picked this series up for the relationship aspect
yeah by the end I headcanon them as a poly OTP but I completely get you not being able to go on because it's not canon. All of the headcanon fodder is in book 3 though.
Thoughts on Tomes it’s just one or two little snippets that make me see poly as an option in the first two. And it’s probably me interpreting an angsty love triangle wrong. I’m definitely going to pick up the third if it’s got more poly vibes. I’ll just stay in denial and no one can tell me any differently. 😂😂😂
cyrobooks Young Adult is geared more for teens. It won’t have descriptive sex scenes. New Adult (in my opinion) is basically just YA that has erotic sex in it.
YA the characters are supposed to be approx 13-18 or 19. New Adult is supposed to be college aged so slightly more mature. NA is actually a defunct genre that they don't really use anymore but had a time a few years ago.
I actually LOOOVE the angst of a separated couple but only when there is a legit reason for it. Not some stupid-ass misunderstanding that could be solved in in 2 mins. if someone just did that thing that most humans do: You know, TALK.

I’m planning on reading strange the dreamer so it’s good to know that it’s still a good story despite the insta love!
I've just finished the winner's crime (I read it all in one day) and now I don't know what to do with myself. The FEELINGS. Kestrel and Arin's angst is everything to me.
I finished The Infernal Devices a few days ago and I still feel gutted!
I actually forgave the insta love in strange the dreamer, while I hated the one in daughter of smoke and bone
same!!
Same! Although I feel it could get cheesy in Muse of Nightmares 🤔
people either love it in one series or the other. there is no in between or both that I've seen lol
Very true. I have similar feelings to you about angel/devil stories so maybe that's it 😂
Deneo Edinburgher oooh that's a good point
When you mentioned the last trope I was just looking at the shelf to see whether you will take out the book or not and I was right hahah!! I agree about it being the best book in the series, THE TENSION IS SO GOOD MAN.
If you liked The Infernal Devices, The Dark Artifices is really amazing. I find most people who liked those don't love The Mortal Instruments, but TDA is amazing.
Yes! People never seem to understand that DoSaB is instalove even in the first situation!
Nerd in the Library thank you! TID should have been a polyamory relationship
LOL I also forgive that with Kelsier
I agree i love kelsier, i also forgave kvothe from name of the wind bc he messed up so often
Noone likes a mary sue unless they dont know better or I could be a hater
The only love triangle that I've been okay with was the one in the Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce (which is the first series under the Tortall banner). This is a great topic! I completely agree on the love triangle in TID, I'm currently rereading them and I really enjoy their dynamic.

thank you :)

100% agree with Daughter of Smoke and Bone. For some reason, the insta love is just fine in it. I also really didn't like it in Strange the Dreamer. I also totally agree with The Infernal Devices love triangle. The only love triangle I've encountered to date that I actually loved.
oOoh, the winner's crime sounds so good!!
the infernal devices series is the best love triangle i have ever read and i dont even like cassandra clare books but she did something right there.
I just like it when a love triangle turns into a beautiful poly relationship
I don’t think I have ever read anything with insta-love but I’m about to listen to Daughter of Smoke and Bone as soon as I get it from Overdrive. I 100% agree with the love triangle in The Infernal Devices!
I’m wondering if you have ever encountered the “We can’t be together because it’s too dangerous” trope because there’s nothing that I loath more in a book. It makes me roll my eyes into another dimension.
ooooh yeah I hate anything where they make excuses like that. It feels so contrived.
Great seeing u back on ur channel!! Happy reading to u!! 😄📖📚
thank you :) I wasn't gone long lol
I dunno if it counts but I liked the love interest is missing in the second book trope for New Moon was pretty good but the reason I say I dunno if it counts is that the big issue with the love interest being missing in the second book is that its overdone for romance based YA and well, New Moon was the one that kinda popularised it and it happened before it was overdone, so.

YES I JUST READ MAYBE SOMEDAY AND SAID THE SAME THING
I loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone the love was cheesy but sooo good lol
These all sound so so good!
I’d love to watch a video on your top ten favourite series of all time if you don’t have one already 😊
I expected to see the Love triangle from the remnant chronicles here :)
If *Strange the Dreamer* 's second half (AKA: when the romance nation attacked) was as good as the first half that book would've gotten a 4.5 from me, but instead I gave it a 3. So sad. I love Lazlo to bits though so I'll still be reading the second book and praying it gets better
Oh yeah the love triangle in thé infernal devices is so good. I actually hated the mortal instruments from begining To end.. just everything..
Tbh the mortal instruments series isn't that good. I just finished city of lost souls (and all of the books have been 2-3 stars).
Yes this is true. HOWEVER, her current series, The Dark Artifices, is an absolute masterpiece so far.
@@karkatvantas9557 I just finished clockwork princess (reading in publishing order), and am looking forward to it because I've heard so much praise
@Roxana Rahgoshay the ending had me crying. Like I'm not even joking. I had to gather myself before going into my living room and interacting with family. I was surprised by how much I care for each character, and how I actually enjoyed the love triangle. Great read, 4 stars

Oh.. I missed seeing you're videos notifications pop up on my phone!
What a great topic!!!!
honestly the reason i don't like love triangles is just bc there will never be one as good as the tid love triangle in my eyes 😂
The main character and the love interest being separated but still being okay with it? Did you mean Chainbreaker by Tara Sim?
Ahhh I loved the Anita Blake series. I think I got up to book 11 before I stopped reading. Recently I went to read a sneak peek of the latest one and Anita was in bed with like five wolves and vampires and I was like...whoa, Anita. The series has changed a bit, lol.
I fear ever peeking back in because it was A LOT when I stopped so I can't imagine
I normally dislike insta-love but if Strange the Dreamer did it well, I think I’ll check that one out!
I actually didn't like it at all in Strange the Dreamer but did like it in DOSAB.
Thoughts on Tomes welp. I obviously misunderstood you 😅 thanks for clearing it up!
This might be a dumb question so feel free to ignore it since I'll try to look it up myself but what's the different between "young" adult and "new" adult? Or like... what exactly does "new" adult tend to do that you dislike compared to "young" adult and simply "adult" books? :o
More on subject, I'm not big on instalove or fast paced romance but Scarlet and Wolf in TLCs?? Omg so good... So good.
Pretty much it's just that the characters are older (in their 20s) and it includes sex which is 'not allowed' in YA.
new adult are books where the protagonist is aged 18-25 (max 30), or the book is aimed at readers of that age.

I stopped reading Anita Blake after book 9 because it just became book porn instead of urban fantasy 😂

Have you read Maybe Not by Colleen Hoover? She's also writing Maybe Now on Wattpad.
I didn't like the romance in daughter of smoke and bone at all 😂
What happened between you and Cassandra Clare?
lol nothing I'm just not interested in her other series and every time I say that 8,000 people in the comments try to convince me otherwise
