The Merton team is so well-rounded. Multiple team members contributing, good collaboration, and a wide range of knowledge. I certainly like their chances to make it to the finals.
It's nice to see two strong teams too where the women are central to the group's overall success. I'm referring to Merton and St. John's. If they can avoid one another in the semi-finals they could both make it to the finals. Excellent teams.
ITubaUTuba While I certainly agree with you, 3 out of 4 is certainly not bad. It seems that most all teams have 1 person who does not contribute. Perhaps St. John's is the real exception this year.
Have a nasty habit of neither paying attention to what university a team comes from nor the sex/colour of contestants, and do not find Merton College's captain's performance impressive merely because she is a woman.
@@unclerogerANKI Appears to me that almost always, when a team have a strong woman contestant, they will make her captain, believing the quizmaster is more benevolent towards a woman, which is probably right.
Surprised nobody has said anything about the question at 4:43. An identity is a relation of equality between two things. Pi is a constant, a single number, and surely not an 'identity' unless there's some alternative definition I'm not aware of.
Was the pterodactyl question one that featured in that film Starter for Ten? I seem to remember it. EDIT I was so excited to hear a song from Matilda hahaha. That is a fantastic musical.
I don't think it's that just here - a couple of times this match, he dives for the button a little over-enthusiastically (or just anxious to flash his tassels - see ITubaUTuba's comment further above).
Don't like how Pax didn't accept Copper. It's happened before that the captain slips the wrong word out and he'll give them the points. He clearly he heard Maloney get it right too ... It's not like the 5 points would change the results but still he should stick to either always allowing or never allowing it not just deciding when he wants to
Yeah I agree that if they get it wrong & change after that he shouldn't give the points, but this exact situation has happened before where a team member gives the answer to the captain and the captain misinterprets it, and Paxman still gives full points as he knows it was "supposed" to be the correct answer given. He's usually very fair but this one just irked me because he'd previously given points for the exact same mistake (wish I remembered the episode to give it as an example!)
HadeesHeart I believe (but I might be wrong) that Paxman is a bit more lenient with the rules during the first round of the season and after that never allows things like this.
But is he a Swede? He says he's from Sweden and Japan. Does this mean he has mixed heritage? It's hard to tell his ethnicity - or his age, for that matter. We're told that the average age of the Merton team is 23-years-old but since his teammates are all probably between the ages of 19 and 20, Wiberg is probably in his early 30s.
I usually refrain from posting negative comments but I'm glad to see Oxlade go. He's a pretty poor captain, having given incorrect answers on two or three occasions (including previous appearances) without conferring with his buddies. On top of that, he lost them five points for mishearing Maloney. Didn't matter in the end of course but still, poor performance as a captain. On a more positive note, Wiberg is a fucking g. So is Peplow. So is Psi. Edit: just learnt that Oxlade will return in a future episode. I shall skip said episode.
I held Wiberg in such high esteem until he let himself say "I THINK it's Björk"... Pretty shocked he missed Norway on the folklore and nobody knew about Istria... Also, I'm certain questions are becoming easier since the quarterfinals... I got 19 this time and 18 last time, before I was around 10-12...
How do you know he votes Conservative? Anyone else you hate because of who (you think) they are - you know, Jews, homosexuals, Muslims, disabled people?
Merton is really impressive; Peplow is a machine
From -5 vs 65 to 270 vs 125! What a match!!Wiberg is killing the game
Wiberg is an absolute don.
Jo Do Agreed

Vncnt D I completely agree. It's quite refreshing. I hope to see them both in the final.

Sitting at home in Istria, watching this episode and being little bit disappointed they didn't know the answer :D
Wiberg alone can probably reach the finals. He knows damn near everything!
Leonaidas S
Because he's secretly Brainiac.
Every time Fitzwilliam Howe knows the answer, Merton Peplow gets there a fraction of a second earlier.
Thanks for the upload from Sweden. Go Wiberg! :D
Eller hur! Go Wiberg.
Thanks too from the Australian audience.
Thanks for the upload from the U.S. Very impressive win!
Merton have a great team dynamic. Fun to watch.
Thanks for the quick upload
Woodland and Wiberg seemed to have a tense or angry dynamic between each other in the beginning, thankfully it eased as the game went on.
Jennelyn Natividad
I noticed it again during the chinese history bonus round ...
Not sure how Wiberg is not the captain of that team.

Thanks for the upload. 12 points from Germany.
Immense thanks from L.A.
Howe looks like he's suppressing a hangover
Or reveling in it
He probably is tbf
Akira is impressive! Wonderful blending of Japanese and Swedish intelligence!
Thanks and Love from Cairo :D

Wiberg is unreal.
I do like having lots of history students.

I think the questions are not as tough as they could be for this stage.
Wiberg is ruthless
I want to grow up and become as tense as Oxalde's eyebrows.
I love Wiberg omg
Phosphodiester is pronounced di-ester not deester
Wiberg is good
Wiberg is great!
For sure. And he wears his intelligence well, which is to say: without arrogance.
MERTON will win this year. I repeat.
MERTON will win this year.
In other news: Water is wet.
Blitz
And in other news: Being alone is lonely.
st johns will wreck them
Sad but didn't happen
Woodland looks bored out of her skull. If I were her lecturer I would be continually feeling guilty.
At 19:17 Howe jumped when the buzzer went off. Why is this a common occurrence that contestants think they have mistakenly pressed the button?
I don't think it's that just here - a couple of times this match, he dives for the button a little over-enthusiastically (or just anxious to flash his tassels - see ITubaUTuba's comment further above).
You'd be surprised Psi.
... and the questions get more obscure and boring ... good to have Wiberg to gaze at ... sigh!
I love woodland
I want to see Merton to battle St. Johns Cambridge. Thatd be great
Don't worry, they will do battle soon enough.

He gives them a point for mispronunciation, but he's fairly consistent that he takes the first answer out of the mouth.

Antti Autio
I agree because THIS! IS! QUARTER FINALS! And the rules get tougher because these are (supposedly) the best eight teams left.
Aye in reality it makes no difference whether they got the points or not haha
go Merton!
I love how much Woodland hates not beeing right. :)
Gotta root for the Swede!

It's a shame Merton have almost no personality...
WIBERG IS SMART AS SHIT.

Merton gang
the Swede not knowing Asbjørnsen & Moe? tsk...
Fuuuuuck it's _so_ good to see defeat on Oxlade's weasly little Tory face. Well done, Merton.
Thank goodness you edited your comment, Memo, came preciously close to making a complete pirck of yourself there....
How do you know he votes Conservative? Anyone else you hate because of who (you think) they are - you know, Jews, homosexuals, Muslims, disabled people?
Merton's captain is hardly any better, face-wise and voice-wise...
I have to say that while I am a tory( Scottish) I have to agree. I bet he got battered at school!
And how dare you talk about the woman I love!
It was the time of the month for woodland
