    I can’t believe that we have 14 days to write all our essays if we get matched.

      I know, right? Either you start immediately after submitting the NCM application and risk overstressing yourself if you don't become finalist, or you wait to see if you become a finalist and then have to write them so fast!

    Hey! I was wondering if QuestBridge covers dorm expenses (bedding, storage space, suite supplies, etc...) I'm a current finalist and this is something I haven't been able to find anywhere. Also, did you get to choose what type of dorm (single, double, suite, etc..)?

    • @8thperiod
      @8thperiod  3 года назад +8

      The financial aid package you receive varies depending on the school you attend and how much money they allott for you as "indirect expenses" i.e. money that is given to you for spending that isn't directly charged for board and tuition or any other fees. For example, my current financial aid package include ~$12,700 worth of "indirect costs" split into "Food, Technology, Personal Expense, Books and Supply, and Transition," though this is just a suggested amount. The money is given you directly (deposited in your bank account) in increments (split into semesters or quarters) and you could technically use it for anything you'd need (or save it) which does include dorm expenses. Depending on how generous your aid is, this is plenty of money to cover dorm expenses and general living expenses. Note that 1. this is based off of my full ride at Stanford (which could be more aid than Questbridge provides) and 2. this amount is relatively high this year because I'm not paying for room and board due to attending virtually at home :(
      Dorms also vary based on the college you'll be committing to but from what I've seen, you can pick a type of dorm specifically (at GT for example) or it could be random. It really just depends.
      Hope this helps!

    Amazing video! Thank you so much :) I was wondering if the initial qb essays served as a foundation for your common app ones? Did you reuse similar ideas for it, or completely started from scratch? Did you apply to other schools outside of QB with the common app?

    • @8thperiod
      @8thperiod  4 года назад +3

      Good question!
      My QuestBridge essay was essentially the extended version of my Common app essay, so I spent my time after QuestBridge working to condense down my biographical essay from the 800 max word limit that QuestBridge provides to the ~650 max word limit on the Common/Coalition apps. I felt like the idea and story was strong and compelling enough for it to be my Common app essay as well, but that is totally up to you; there's plenty more time to work and rework it before regular decision deadlines for other schools. The only schools (of note) I applied and got into outside of QB were Georgia Tech and UGA. Good luck!

      8th Period thank you so much!! I’m just afraid that it’ll seem like I put no effort into my common app if the qb partners see it, when in reality, I really like the qb essay I wrote. Do you think that would be the case?

    • @8thperiod
      @8thperiod  4 года назад +2

      @@sam17577 If I recall, I remember that QB partners expect those doing QB that happen to reapply for RD to have very similar biographical essays and identical/similar supplements to their earlier application. You will be perfectly fine going with a very similar essay as they understand how QuestBridge works with having an almost identical essay as the Common app variant. They don't expect you to submit 2 entirely different essays just because you have the chance to apply "twice." If you do get deferred from the NCM and choose not to roll into their EA/ED, this just gives you more time to refine your essay for RD.

  • @astaleclya2074
    @astaleclya2074 4 года назад +1

    So if you apply through QuestBridge you still have to do every supplemental essay through the common or coalition application?

    • @8thperiod
      @8thperiod  4 года назад +2

      Every QuestBridge partner has a different method of submitting their supplemental essay but most of them have their own application portal that you receive after becoming a finalist (but before the match) where you submit it. You'd have to check the "Match Requirements" page of every QuestBridge partner that you've listed for the match or the Regular Decision requirements found here:
      www.questbridge.org/high-school-students/regular-decision
      to figure out where you have to submit the supplementals for the colleges on your QuestBridge list. It's fairly convoluted so depending on what QB partners you're applying to you'd have to check out all of their requirements individually when you reach that point during this application season.
      Hope that helps!

    Hi! I’m applying to Stanford as well through QB and I only have one supplemental question? Am I looking at this right?

    • @8thperiod
      @8thperiod  4 года назад

      I think they adjusted the Stanford QuestBridge supplement to only include that one prompt rather than being the same as the regular application supplements. My advice for that one is to be genuine, playful and have fun with it rather than taking yourself too seriously. Good luck!

      Also did you apply to any schools that for the supplements they want you to do the common app? Because I’m applying to USC as well and they want you to answer the supplemental questions from the common app but I don’t know if I should write a different common app essay as well? Or if I can use the questbridge essay for the common app essay?

    • @8thperiod
      @8thperiod  4 года назад

      I'm fairly sure that they're aware that you're a QuestBridge applicant so they'll pay attention to the biographical essay in your QuestBridge application and ignore the repeated one in the Common app. I also listed USC and submitted the supplements through the Common app and I just used the essay I used to apply to my Common app schools (which was very similar to the QB one but it likely doesn't matter). You should be fine regardless of what's in the essay box as long as they get your QuestBridge application :)

      8th Period you got deferred from the initial match? Does that mean you were a finalist? If so, did you revise your supplements? Or did you submit the same ones?

    • @8thperiod
      @8thperiod  4 года назад +3

      @@sam17577 I was a finalist but not a winner/recipient of the actual NCM scholarship. I wasn't able to revise my supplements, since I submitted them after I became a NCM finalist but before the NCM results came out. The supplements you submit for the NCM cannot be revised after you get deferred from the NCM or when you're rolled over into the early action/decision of the schools you've applied to. Hope that helps :D -Denny
