Goodbye 2023! We Re-Join Civilization After a Rough Sail [Ep. 139]

  • We take a look back at 2023 this New Years Eve and remember Cape Horn as we battle tough conditions and make repairs while sailing to our first dock after over 3 months alone in the wilderness of Patagonia.
    #sailing #newyear #2023 #capehorn
    Our year in review contains some unforgettable moments: we sailed offshore in heavy seas through the roaring 40's and furious 50's, we dodged southern ocean storms, we rounded Cape Horn in a gale, had a cocktail at the famous Micalvi Yacht Club, sailed in blizzards, visited 3 glaciers, sailed through icebergs, navigated the fjords of Patagonia, learned new languages and cultures, experienced our natural world in new ways, and more.
    As we bring in the new year we look forward to what 2024 will bring! More sailing, more ocean crossing, more adventure! Cheers to you this NYE, thank you for sailing along with us through our videos!

    I wish every sailing channel understood the importance of the musical score to setting the scene and the mood for the adventure as well as you do, Katie! It is very important for me and to the enjoyment of the video! Thanks for the attention to detail! And who doesn't like to see a dog get some loving and be more a part of the voyage. It was a little sad to see some of the dogs on the island being locked out of the houses in the cold and wet weather.

    Thank you Kate and Curtis for taking all of us to this magnificent journey of yours!

    I thoroughly enjoyed 2023 with you. I am recuperating after a traumatic car accident so am housebound. I thought to myself how great it would be to go round the horn and there you were doing it. Maybe it was due to my mind state but I considered the time of year as being perilous, this made your videos compulsory watching. However when you joined the catamaran to round the cape for a second time I thought you were showing off- sic.

    Happy New Year Both! Congratulations on your amazing achievements in such a hostile environment. On a side note, it always amazes me how many sailors when tacking, do not let the headsail back before releasing it and sheeting in on the opposite tack, which pulls the bows through the wind quickly without losing momentum through the water. Good luck, best wishes and fair winds for 2024.

    Very nice video, like all the others. I like your channel.
    I have a 14:51 question, which has probably been asked many times. How do you do with your dog? Meaning did you have her trained to do her things somewhere on the boat? Where? This when you cannot get to land by dingy for days, like on passage.
    Thisxis because I am a solo sailor and I would like to have a dog on my boat, but I am afraid for his/her well being if I cannot get to land regularly. Thank you

    So cool to see your dog follow instructions and chase that chimango caracara predator bird from your bow rail. You might have been able to throw that lifeless feathered body into the sea if she had caught it, instead of observing a predator bird at close quarters. And that caveman roar and laugh afterwards - what fun! Maybe biting at a beached seal next, or snapping at the tail of a dolfin swimming by in the shorebreak next. Good dog Roxy!!

    I have a question about how you like your J Boat. Does the ride ever become so hard that you sometimes wish you had a heaver full keel boat? I bought a full keel motorsailer (Nauticat 44) because we're an older couple. Originally I wanted a faster boat, but the more I thought about our age, the more I tended towards a full keel. I'm just curious how a younger couple feel about their performance boat decision. Would you pick the same boat again after all the years and miles you put on it? Fair winds!

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  5 месяцев назад

      Hi Jason! Welcome aboard and great question. There are times when we slow down, more so to preserve the boat, rig, sails rather than the people. In the big nasty stuff it really doesn’t matter what boat design, it still is rough. Pounding upwind or fast tight reaching in big seas can be loud and wet. We do welcome the advantage of speed when we need it, it comes in very handy. So far, we would pick the same boat again, we think she is a great combination of speed, comfort, safety, size/handling, and live ability. We have been on board a Nauticat as well and they are nice boats. In the end, each boat has its advantages, but we are all part of the sailing community, and that is the most important :-)

    • @jasonmcintosh2632
      @jasonmcintosh2632 5 месяцев назад

      @@SailingSweetRuca "So far, we would pick the same boat again." That's what I wanted to know. Thank you so much for your reply. I find all of the boat design choses to be very interesting. When I was searching for a cruising boat, I swore I was going to get a performance boat. You just can't beat speed... but low and behold, I ended up with a full keel motor-sailer, ketch rig no less. Almost every boat will shine when it's used for what it was intended for.
      I wish I had your youth and energy, but I spent it on other non-sailing adventures. Your trip around South America is awesome. I hope to make it down there one day... Fair winds.
