From the Levi’s Archives: Discovering the Design of the First 501 Jean | Levi's

- Join us in celebrating 150 years of the Levi's® 501® - the original modern blue jean! We’ll explore the earliest pieces in our Archives to find a model of the design that came to market in 1873.
Levi's® Historian, Tracey Panek, and Design Director of Collections, Paul O'Neill, piece together the missing links and reveal what the first pair of 501® jeans would have looked like. Follow Tracey to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. where one of the earliest 501® jeans, or waist overalls as they were known at the time, was donated in 1964.
Discoveries at the Smithsonian, along with hours of research in the Archives, revealed that the first 501® jean had most of the features it has today, like rivets and a button fly, but surprising details that later disappeared.

I think the watch pocket on the waistband is great, looks more like where it ought to be and easier to use on non-belt jeans, and for belt jeans, the belt would turn it into a secure 'locked' pocket. I'd buy some.

What I'm wondering is, could Levi's re-create the original 501 of the 1870's for people to wear today? I saw a picture of them and I would wear jeans like that today and would buy several pairs for work... just an idea.

the made in mexico 501s are pretty good - vintage made in usa 80s-90s is actually cheaper than a lot of the modern models

Pitiful that not a single 150th anniversary piece will be American made. Don't tell me it can't cuz there's dozens of companies doing it. Levis is one of the wealthiest so the definitely can.
