2021 and we are still here folks, what a profound song all around, an emotional journey that deserves to be appreciated for years to come!
Its been 12 years since i uploaded this video, and im a year or two late on this comment, but its insane to me that there are people still out here discovering this video and sharing their appreciation for this song that still to this day is my favorite song of all time

Damn.... no matter where you are in life this song finds a way to speak to you, be you a good man or a bad man this song will still make you think. That is true genius right there.

I always knew my all time favorite TSO song was Christmas Canon, but in hearing this song for the first time ever, I find it to be very creative and not half-bad. I remember seeing TSO in concert one time many years ago, and all I could recall from that concert was the Wizards in Winter when the concert lights literally blinded me. I still took an instant liking to this special Christmas group after that concert.
Any TSO Album can be played from beginning to end with no stops or song skipping!!! Now that takes talent!!! Awesome Album Awesome Song!!!!
EVERY time i listen to this song I cry. My current TSO concert streak is 5 years in a row and i dont plan to break it any time soon.
this is the very definition of epic..this whole album is great maybe their best ever and an underrated concept album.
I would LOVE to see more like this from them. I think they do good for Christmas stuff, but that's barely scratching the surface of their talent.
That middle part where he speeds up his singing. That's just incredible.

I don't know, who you are or why you did that. I just wanted to say, that I feel really sorry for you. I don't want to blame you, the only thing I want you to know is, that this song helped me through a really tough time. I lost the person who first showed this song to me, so I listened to it again and again. For days, weeks, months this song was the only thing which could make me smile. At least half of the clicks must be mine...

This is a beautiful song with so many emotions tied to it. You cant listen to it and not feel the power the lyrics and music bring together. This is truly a masterpiece.

I agree, its a common 4 chord ratio. Sounds awesome but I prefer it in "what child is this" when it changes key.
It's funny you'd say that because the first time I ever heard this song I realized it sounded familiar... then I immediately started singing "What Child Is This?" and it matched up perfectly haha.
The only difference is that this song is in 4/4 while "What Child Is This?" is in 6/8.

the word:"the silence" in intro of song. It's not Khmer language, it's Vietnamese language. I'm pretty sure because i'm a Vietnamese.
You may be correct. However, he put what was described in the album booklet.
The story is about a Vietnam vet and others that suffered in the war... the word COULD be referring to the Khmer people, the ethnic group... many of whom fought against the communists even after the fall of Saigon...
Maybe "In Khmer" there was meant as a dialect identification?

@Savatageaddict777 Without the story the album is still great, with the story it's a masterpiece. I have no idea how they are able to do it, but throughout TSO and Savatage, their stories are insanely captivating.

No, it's not about suicide. It's about a man named Tran-Do, who is a General of an army (i forget which country) who terrorizes its own citizens. At a point in the war, he meets an American Soldier he's holding prisoner. After a few exchanges of words, Tran-Do has an epiphany (a life changing realization).
Drashrock he IS contemplating suicice over the course of this song though. Its kinda obvious later in the song. " did you ever walk up to the edge of a cliff stare into the abyss as if your mind wonders if you should take one more step further into that night. "
Contemplation does not make it the subject of the song. Might as well say the Coliseum is what the song is about then.

I love that guy, one of my boyfriends sang me to sleep w/ Music of the Night and we sang those songs together, a duet on the theme song . u insulted two of my favorite people in music, and technically my ex. i am not mad, just sayin. that's the problem w/ writing comments like these people could take it personally. it's not ur fault i just don't want someone mobbing u or something (!)

Alayna VanKatwyk Rob Evan sings two songs on this album. He also tours with the east coast group but left halfway through last year and is not with them again this year because of his projects.
Funny that you picked up on him sounding Jean Valjean because Rob Evan (the one who sings this song) played him on Broadway for a short while!

Love the song, but the lyrics aren't practical. Sometimes they jump around the screen and appear in sections, and it gets annoying and would not be as ideal as if they just appeared on the screen in sections, one after the other, all fading in and out at the same speed, especially for a longer song like this. Let the song be the art. Don't waste effort trying to fancify the lyrics yourself.

But he does contemplate suicide before deciding to redeem himself instead. Also the song is meaningful in its own right without considering the Tran-Do story.
