    I hate how everybody says drugs shouldn't make you high or feel euphoric. If I'm sick or in pain I'm taking the one that makes me feel good rather than just better. Happiness is a beneficial and positive effect for a drug that's supposed to help you. Here you have codeine that's not really strong for pain. You can take it and be so high that it doesn't matter that much that it hurts. Or you can take fentanyl in winch case you can lose a finger and not feel it but you won't feel very good. Both are addictive or shall I say cause dependence. If I'm always gonna be in pain I'd rather take the one that won't kill me and makes me smile.

    I was sick recently and after a few days my mom gave me an old bottle and said it would help my cough that I had. I took it and went to bed. I woke up the next day so freaking happy. The stuff in the bottle was a mix of Codeine and some other meds and I still was a little buzzed from the last dose because I only went to bed a few hours prior. My dumbass took 5 times the normal dose and got the best sleep I had in a long time. When I woke up to go to school I quickly googled what Codeine was and saw it was kinda like morphine. I decided to take another big dose and go to school. I was so freaking high. I kept misspelling my own name when I wrote it down and everything was just so funny and I felt really good around people. Granted this was just accidental personal experience and I didn't plan on going to school high off my face but it will make a good story.

    I think Codeine does have anti coughing effects simply because it slows down regular breathing and breathing can aggravate a bad cough. Shallower breathing, less irritation in the throat, less coughing. Right?

    • @TheDrugClassroom
      @TheDrugClassroom  7 лет назад +18

      The studies, at least those dealing with cough from URI, have used placebo controls. Once you're comparing codeine in a blinded manner against placebo, the beneficial effect doesn't appear distinguishable from placebo. And typical doses for cough don't substantially impact respiration.

    • @TheDrugClassroom
      @TheDrugClassroom  7 лет назад +22

      Oral morphine is available and is sometimes now being used in place of codeine. And alternative opioids are also fine, as are NSAIDs and paracetamol. The use cases for codeine are pretty limited.

    • @bkit170
      @bkit170 7 лет назад +9

      GAllium Yttrium.. Yes, I thought that because morphines bioavailability is 10% (90% gets destroyed in the stomach) that they convert it to codeine which has a 90% bioavailability. Codeine cannot be injected because it is lethal this way (not because of tolerance or anything, just from the toxicity of this way of administration). Also yes you cant snort codeine as it needs to be metabolized in the liver.

As a pure CODEISAN (spain's pure codeine preparation of 28.7mg per pill shown in this video) addict, often times taking more than a gram a day (at least 6 hours between doses so my CYP2D6 can regenerate, this video was very accurate. I'm stunned to hear that codeine is basically ineffective as an anti-tussive. I've been susceptible to URIs all of my life and have always found that codeine was hella effective, sometimes being the only thing that would control my cough, for 4-6 hours. Hard to believe that the placebo effect could so consistently work even in cases of severe bronchitis and pneumonia, but stranger things have happened, I suppose.

    Prescribing practices need to change, especially given we have enough alternatives to codeine to make the switch.

      The Drug Classroom Isn't even just DXM much more effective at stopping cough? Why would an addictive substance be given out for common URI? Not to mention the popularization of "lean" in pop culture. Why would you take something at a massive dose just to have part of it become morphine?? And then take promethazine to stop the itch/stomach problems and also combine alcohol???? I can understand if someone wanted to CWE a bunch of codeine but it just seems too dependent on metabolism to be sure how will it affect you. Meh, to each their own I suppose. Another case for full drug legalization and regulation.

      At least with cough associated with URI, the evidence pretty consistently finds that both codeine and placebo will reduce cough significantly post-administration. The difference between placebo and codeine isn't significant, indicating whatever change is noticed is a placebo effect. The studies mostly all point in the same direction on this topic.
      Some of the studies that showed an effect with codeine weren't controlled. Once placebo controls were added, the effect disappeared.

      i dont know about studies, just experiance. i unfortunatly had a serious codeine habit for 5+ years i live in a 1st world country where at one time i could buy a gram of codeine for under $15 over the counter, theyve regulated it somewhat but its still OTC. it was not placebo. as soon as the effects started wearing off the cough came back terribly. 2 doctors and countless pharmacists (i have a few friends that studied medicine) have said codeine and DHC (to a much lesser extent) are the best cough suppressants on the market for a dry irritable cough.
      the codeine ceiling dose is either a myth or some people are lucky/unlucky enough for more of it to cross the BBB or metabolize it extremely well. i know of someone that was up to a 3500mg+ daily addiction and it killed him. he didnt wake up one day, he actually overdosed on codeine which we all thought was pretty much impossible. this guys addiction and overdose is documented on one of the biggest drug websites on the internet (they focus on HR, im sure you know it.)
      i know youre a smart guy and know you're shit but respectfully i disagree with the studies. ive seen it work for way too many people. maybe they were testing it at low medicinal doses and i assure you we didnt CWE low doses, ha. the high dose may have made the difference.

      no im not saying that. Im more referring to addiction potential and social harm like dependence. maybe if you werent so close minded and would think for a second. You very well know that the USA is having an Opioid crisis. Im saying the best medical route to prevent it from continuing is to reduce the use of these pharmaceuticals as we are just learning now what damage they have caused to society. Opioids are fantastic drugs but are VERY addictive and dependent. Back in the 80s there was an issue with a drug called Methaqualone. This drug, also known by brand as Qualuudes were prescribed to people as a sleep aid. They at first were easily obtained OTC so people began discovering its recreational use. Soon the FDA had to ban the drug and it was scheduled but it already caused damage. In Pharamacology we look for substances that are safe both physically and psychologically.
      Good day

      Addiction doesn´t start in the drugs. Inorder for someone who takes an opioid once to become addicted they need other problems. The opioid crisis only exists because people are doing street opioids instead of prescription opioids. There was no "opioid epidemic" when prescription opioids where at their height but now when people can´t get those they turn to heroin witch is cut with fent so they die but there would be no such problem if opioids were legal and regulated that way but now people take every overdose from unregulated opioids and use that as evidence that regulated opioids are the absolute worst.

    Codeine has been a blessing for my chronic back pain every time I have a flare-up. I just take the necessary dose a day to keep my pain levels tolerable. Just 60 mg or 2 tablets of 30 mg per day can be enough although I might need a bit more but rarely.
    All in all it has always been my rescue analgesic to get me out of acute pain. Regardless of everything you said, which I can't dispute, codeine does work for me.

    Ceilling dose is misunderstood, it is about painkiller effect, recreational effects still increase which is seen with growing tolerance, say person needs 800mg to get desired effects, dosing 1000mg will give better effect. Improvements are really small but they do happen. Speaking from experience of many people (myself included), sadly I can't provide any research to back that up.

The side effects are bad (vomiting/ nausea/ itching) and at first I don’t understand why people get addicted. But after a few days (the pain goes away), I experience the state of IDGAF. What if these painkillers are directly injected into your veins, is it still going to be a limit of days you can take it? I know 7 days is maximum for most painkillers....but wondering if their is a different effect if not taken orally??

    • @TheDrugClassroom

      There is not a seven day limit for opioids that is related to liver damage. Opioids can be used for a prolonged period without liver toxicity.

    There actually is a good reason to give codeine PO instead of morphine, as most all of the codeine is usable by the body PO whereas approximately only 10% of oral morphine is. Approximately 90% of oral morphine is inactivated in the first pass liver pathway.

In Illinois the 4 oz. bottle can be sold OTC by the pharmacist. Chertussin A/C is considered an "Exempt Schedule 5 narcotic" so all you have to do is show your id and sign the Pseudoephedrine log and can only buy 1 bottle every 48 hours here in Illinois. Also it is exempt because it has Guafennisun (Mucinex) and make you sick.

But it didn't do anything for my pain, I had to take tramadol in high dosages which still does nothing for my pain, but I get a nice euphoria from it, it also helps my anxiety. But after seeing people addicted to it I don't want it, but I could easily get addicted to it. I'll stick to one tramadol tab and 2 grams of weed.

    Yeah codeine's the worst, had 4 wisdom teeth pulled out and all they'd give me for pain relief was 20 Citodon which is 500mg paracetamol/30mg codeine phosphate. Was told to take up to 4 per day, and they did next to nothing for the pain. I hate paracetamol in general as I think it's a pointless and dangerous drug, it's so stupid they put that shit in there just to "keep people from getting high off of codeine", which leads to people getting liver damage for life.
    Ended up getting 12 5mg Oxynorm (IR oxycodone), which actually helped, and no I did not get addicted just because i managed my pain with 60mg's of oxycodone.

    • @MrHamthepig
      @MrHamthepig 5 лет назад +4

      It can be both since an opiate means that the drug is derived from opium and is a naturally occurring alkaloid in the plant (not synthetic/semi-synthetic), while an opioid is simply any drug that works on the opioid receptors in the brain to provide an analgesic effect (includes natural, synthetic, and semi-synthetic opioids).
