I think Steven was being dismissive towards Spinel because he is just so TIRED of fighting and fixing his mom's problems to the point where he's annoyed by it. Like, he wants to help, but he's just so sick of doing it, knowing that it almost always has to be his mom's fault.
That's what I'm thinking too, plus Spinel is really out of place if you think about it. She isn't a crystal gem and came to earth out of nowhere. Steven didn't care about Jasper when she came to earth, but lapis. And of course Steven needed to save his friends, family and the earth within ~48 hours. So the pressure was high, he couldn't just befriend Spinel knowing he would never be a true friend to her.
Well I think there's something darker that went on with spinel I think she poofed herself and then came back with the tear marks and her gem upside down because it doesn't explain how she got that form unless she's shape shifting or something
The thing was he don't know how to. All his life he been surrounded by love and affection that he could never truly understand how it feels to be abandoned. Which is why he never entertained the idea of affection because he didn't know how bad it was

Like honestly you are the first reactors I've seen to actually sympathize for Spinel. Also, the resolution to Spinel's character arc always had to be the way it happened because her problem is about needing to be wanted/needed and relying on someone else for her own self worth. So the lesson about changing yourself is pretty poignant in this case, especially with her saying "At least when you change, you change for the better. When I change, I change for the worse."
@@petiteperuvian you right about everything except for one thing: Steven WANTED to be her friend. She even noticed that he really did like her, despite what happened. If you look closely at when they were at the garden, he only let go of her hand so he could dramatically spread his arms out. Also, after she turned off her injector, she thought he was going abandon her like Pink did or use the rejuvenatar on her when, in actuality, he wasn't going to do that any of that. And in the song, "Change", he does say that they she can change and they don't have to fight. That they could still be friends.
@@petiteperuvian , he was INCLUDING himself. It just made it more dramatic, that's all. There was no disgust, or any other negative towards Spinel. If he thought that, then he WOULD have used the reguvinator on her after she turned off her injector.
@@andrewkuldip8785 Actually, he was dismissive of her plight even when he empathized with her. The point of Steven's development in this movie is that he became complacent with the idea of a happily ever after. Whether it was about getting Garnet back or not he brushed her off; which is moronic to do to someone with *abandonment* issues. The song "Change" was also him acknowledging this and making a *better effort* to connect with her.
@Emma albino Listen, I'm not talking out of my ass here. There are literally the only two reactors I've watched that felt the same sadness during the movie that I did for Spinel. The rest of the ones I've seen only started sympathizing when they saw the back story, but these two almost right away identified the tragic nature of Spinel as a character.
@@petiteperuvian I think you might have misunderstood my initial comment. I agree with Steven being selfish and working more towards his own goal and almost disregarding Spinel entirely. However, Steven solving everything by he himself becoming the villain's friend is 1. Not actually how a lot of the conflicts have been resolved (Bismuth became Steven's friend after she came around and stopped hating Steven/Rose, Steven isn't the Diamond's friend he just was the catalyst for them to want to change) 2. Not actually healthy for Steven or the people he befriends. Remember this is technically the person who came with the intention of taking Steven's family away before ultimately killing him. It takes time for even someone as empathetic as Steven to put behind him.
Spinel had to find a way to like herself and find someone she could start fresh with before attempting to patch up her mistakes and burned bridges. So while Steven was pretty dismissive, you have to remember that he doesn't have the same third party view as we do and is pretty emotionally invested in repairing his LITERAL FAMILY. It's a little unfair to call Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl "friends" at this point.

I literally just broke off a toxic and bad friendship that's been tearing me down for a long while now. And this movie has been my sole way to feel less alone because I relate to Spinel. I've been watching people react to the movie, I guess to feel even less alone. To see people be shocked about Spinel being abandoned because it makes me feel like it's appropriate for me to be upset about my situation.
Of all the reactions, you two were the most comforting. I couldn't tell you why. I think maybe it's because of how you two interacted as friends, how compassionate you were for Spinel, and how upset you seemed to be that Pink would do that to her. I can tell you two have a strong and loyal friendship, and I felt that warmth in this video.

All due respect, Steven's not a bad person for caring more about his family and friends over the suffering of a Gem he's known for a day. He would have ABSOLUTELY tried to help after everything else got sorted.

Just because Steven didn’t want to be her friend doesn’t mean he was being mean. It’s not like Steven can be everyone’s friend.
He wanted to help innocent people who were going to die if he couldn’t stop the injector. He wanted to help his friends who were hurt by Spinel. Near the end he even wanted to help Spinel. The issue was that he said she could find friends on earth, he never said he would be that friend, but she assumed he would be her replacement friend; a replacement for Pink Diamond.
It’s not Steven’s job to be everyone’s friend. Trying to be friends with someone just to satisfy them would be disingenuous. And Steven doesn’t want to be anyone’s replacement for Pink Diamond. That’s the whole point of the beginning of the movie. He is his own person.
It’s terrible what happened to Spinel, but it’s not Steven’s fault or his job to fix everyone’s issues. But he still tries.
Thank you reading these comments its like people forgot steven is his own person. For him to just be 💯 % okay with Spinel right after every thing she did would make him fake .. And not a real friend.. I agree what happen to her is missed up... But what she did to steven is also missed up and no one who is genuine would just be okay with their family being rest where they don't even know you... At lest Steven tried

While I also wasn't that happy with Steven being dismissive of Spinel... it actually does have a purpose.
He became complacent with the status quo the last two years, the peace making him forget some of the important things he learned while in that constant struggle. He thought his happily ever after was the notion of everything being fine, and because of the situation and how stressful it was, trying to return it back to that "happy" state it started in became his goal. It's also why he had to be reminded of what was truly important by Bismuth in 'Who We Are'. That's also what Spinel realizes is Steven's goal once she takes the injector out; he immediately went back to trying to fix the wrongs of the situation. That's why Spinel asked the questions she did and got mad; she felt betrayed by his kindness... though honestly part of that can be blamed on her reading his intentions wrong. In 'Found' he never states he'll be part of the 'someday, somewhere, somehow', just that she *_can_* find it if she tries. And she in her naivete assumed Steven would immediately be that support.
I... honestly can't really blame Steven, considering the circumstances. It all took place within two days or so, and in that time, a Gem came, disrupted their peace, reset his family and his own powers, had herself reset, and was in a race against time to try and save the Earth from the bio-poison. It also didn't help that fusing with Greg to get Pearl back took an enormous amount of energy out of him. Of course he'd be more interested in trying to help the people in his immediate circle first. He's done it in the past. Honestly, Spinel's past didn't really help the tensions, either. She has abandonment issues, and as such she's incredibly clingy and attaches onto everything someone says. Her own thoughts on how things would go got disrupted by Steven putting her on the back-burner to focus on trying to get him and Garnet back to normal. Hell, he said, "No! Well, sort of," in response to her question because he didn't mean to use her, but had to use her to get the injector out. Nothing said he wasn't willing to help Spinel, he just put his well-being and Garnet's above her own. And to him the notion of forgiving and forgetting is quite literally what he's done with all of the conformed antagonists. He doesn't like holding grudges so he wouldn't want one against Spinel. She just interpreted his dismissal of her actions as negative (and with her history, I don't blame her), and took it the wrong way. Of course it also didn't help that Steven couldn't put the Rejuvinator away and it was discovered. But like Steven was saying, the truth wasn't that he hated her or just wanted to use her, just that he had a lot on his plate and could only handle some things at a time. He never intended to do her harm, it just came out wrong, and that's why he went to talk to her.
You're valid in disliking how he treated her (I felt similarly), but... it helps to view the situation in a bigger picture, in hindsight.

@@petiteperuvian True, true. A good counterargument. I suppose my only thing would be that it escalated too... quickly? To amend before it spiralled out of control. Or rather that the introduction of the Rejuvinator made things way worse and he couldn't break it immediately to show instead of tell that he had no ill intents. Definitely could've been handled differently but I've come to terms with it in the long-run. Doesn't mean I agree with that particular writing choice but, eh, tensions were high. Still love him, like you. :P

I can see where you guys are coming from, but it’s important to remember that Spinel had literally injected poison into the Earth. Steven was trying to clean up the mess that had been created. Sure, he was a bit dismissive, but considering what was at stake and him being the only one who could solve it, I don’t blame him for having his priorities.
But there has been other gems that tried to destroy earth that he was more empathetic for

i hope spinel shows up again in season 6 and that she's made some recovery from her trama with pink.
SuperCool Guy McGee yeah I was worried about that too. Plus we don’t know how easy it is/isn’t to for Rebecca to get a hold of Spinel’s voice actress. Additionally Season 6 has to be made in a fashion that makes it easy for viewers who don’t see the movie to keep up, which might unfortunately mean making Spinel nothing more than a cameo, simply waving to Steven from the sidelines anytime he visits the palace.
I pray it isn’t that, cuz Spinel’s character could be great to mix with other gems like the Famythest, and I feel that Season 6 could have it’s first half of episodes be kinda like flashbacks of events that directly followed the Season 5 finale. That we we get to keep the progress we made with Spinel while also being filled in with a lot of the stuff we overlooked in the movie, like the Treasure Chest in Lion’s mane, wherever Jasper is, stuff like that. Idk, I’m just thinking aloud.
I'm really hoping season 6 takes place after the movie but maybe does a few episodes that take place beforehand. Like they talk about something in the present and then have a flashback on how it happened or something.

One of the themes of the movie is recognition of toxic relationships, which Spinel acknowledges at the end and goes with the Diamonds instead of forcing a close friendship with Steven because they would hurt each other with where they were at emotionally. For the first time in the series, Steven doesn’t have to be the sole dependent for another gem’s continuing mental health, but instead can delegate the responsibility to others. It’s so much to be a reliant for someone else, not to mention multiple beings. So the ending was handled well I believe.
I felt bad for Spinel but I didn’t get as mad at Steven as you did (not that he wasn’t being a jerk to Spinel, cause don’t get me wrong, he was). Even though Spinel didn’t remember attacking the gems (his friends/family he’s known all his life) or bringing the injector, Steven knows it was her, and it would be hard for anyone to get past that. I believe he tried his best after finding out about Spinel’s past, and I don’t think he intended to make Spinel feel bad after the injector was deactivated; I believe that was more-so her PTSD/paranoia coming to head.

Steven realizes this near the end and that's what finally reaches spinel as she realizes her faults too.

The time skip really impacted Steven. I mean, as a 12/14 year old you definitely stand different in life than as a 16 yo. He grew up a little and with those 2 years he forgot where he started and forgot the thing that made him 'him' in the first place. Plus, his friends meant more to him than Spinel, a stranger, could ever do. yeah in the show he was always compassionate, but in this film Steven is tired. Tired of saving the universe. All he wants is to settle down with his friends and family, but that 'happily ever after' dug a little too deep into him. Spinel reset everyone, even Steven. So he got reminded of what he forgot/lost.
Meanwhile Spinel was latching herself onto Steven, but Steven already had friends (and it's a lot like real life, in which sometimes people just won't be your friend). I mean, not even Steven can be friends with everybody, right? He can sympathize with them, and relate and help them, but Steven was never meant to be her friend. (Which is why I love the diamonds taking her, as Earth would never be Spinel's home, she felt too out of place there.) All the gems on earth are Crystal Gems and Spinel isn't one of them.
Also a little side note: I like to imagine that Pink back in the day was a brat with sometimes okay intentions. I think she saw Spinel more as a toy than a friend. Cause she took Pearl with her, not Spinel, already says a lot. Pink was young and inexperienced and she hurt everyone around her. (Which was kinda caused by the other diamonds too. I wonder if Pink had the same 'sympathize' powers Steven had. Imagine being able to feel other people's feeling, when all those people only have *negative* emotions, yikes.)
I like to think the Earth and Greg changed her a bit and that Steven's influence could help her if she ever comes back. Love like you sings it all: I always thought I've been bad, now I know that it true, cause I think you're so good, and I'm nothing like you. I feel like Rose made bad decisions, but will one day learn a little bit from them. (AND I'm NOT saying she's a good person! She could just be a better person if she tried. I mean, we've seen the other Diamonds.)

Like, he didn't _just_ want to use her to turn off her injector. It's just that he was _too_ focused on getting back to his happy ending and fixing his friends. It was honestly just a misunderstanding on both ends, which Steven eventually figures out later that he's lost sight of how he should've been with all the happily ever after nonsense.
And to be honest, it makes sense. After fighting and working nonstop for _years_ i'd probably be dead set on just getting it over with to go back to being with my family again
I agree, he probably should've given her more attention, but _both_ of them reacted badly to the situation, but it makes sense why they did.

I don't see how steven was mean to her. He was just neclectant of her because he was going through some shit. Steven has about as much right to be selfish as spinel :y
Failing to understand and failing to listen are two different things. While being her friend would have put a band-aid on the situation, Spinel already gave a good reason why that wouldn't work for long by the end of the movie. What Spinel went through takes time and healing and Steven is not the one to help her with that. We been given hints throughout everyone's song in the movie (specifically independent together and True kinda of Love, all the songs really). To be in-fear of a partner, or someone who might go off the handle in case it takes you a little longer to come back from the corner store is another form of abuse(It is clear Steven wouldn't be able to handle being around Spinel 24/7... maybe season 1 Steven).
But the point is you are not in charge of helping a person heal or change. Steven is not responsible in helping someone heal or change(again point made in his boss battle song Change). Your support groups, therapist, etc; their job is not to actually change you themselves, but to give you the understanding or the tools needed to help do it yourself. Being with the Diamonds is the ideal situation for Spinel by the end of the movie, only because they actually suffer the same way. They both need attention and someone to give their attention too.
I'm glad there are more people who are sympathetic to Spinel though. This is the first reaction where I saw someone picked up on the trauma well before drift away happened. However if this seems too familiar to those watching, please realize (if your in Spinel's situation or Steven's); it's not your fault, it's not your job to heal someone, the only person that can change you is you.

Yea, just making sure that the blame wasn't put on either. I've seen both sides and it's rough. However your reactions is one of my favorites. Not many people get the emphatic side of the story! Like after watching this, and the end of Steven Universe, the song Love like You, made so much sense now. Pink/Rose did a lot of bad and good. I think Rose actually thought Steven's love would be stronger and better, than her being there. She actively chose to go away, and while some people will think she's dumping all her mistakes on Steven( That's fair). It's clear that she had more faith in her unborn child than herself to make it better. Which says.. a lot.
I'm excited to see what they do with Steven though!
@@petiteperuvian Honestly I hope there's a future episode of just, everyone that Pink/Rose loved and hurt in circle and they just... talk about it. It would be the most awkward but much needed thing for some of these characters. Like when Steven said, "I can't believe mom did tha-, actually I can believe." wooooo boooooy. But yea, it's funny her most selfish and irresponsible thing was making Steven. How she talked about Greg and humans suggested, that she was impressed that they changed.... faster I guess? Gem's can change, we have proof of that, but without steven, it was over something like centuries.
Steven existing, brought so much change to the crystal gems, in the span of 16 years compared to Rose who's been in charge for....a longer time. I don't know, I find it cool!

Steven has to realize that he needs to change because he becomes complacent with the status quo and with "happily ever after". Therefore he's really focused on restoring it and completely neglects Spinel. Spinel has to learn that she can't rely on others entirely for her sense of self worth and while she can be a friend, she has to learn boundaries and to be her own person.

Spinel(reset) is “supposed” to be someone’s friend just like Pearl is “supposed” to be someone’s servant. But deciding who you are as an individual is the goal that Steven has for other gems. Besides, the actual Spinel is emotionally damaged. You can’t really compare her to Steven. She needed help, Steven offered help, and she assumed the worst because of her issues. What Steven learned wasn’t that he was being bad, but that he could make things better. That everyone can make things better if they change for the better.

I think the only time that LOOKED dissmisve was when he wanted to save the Earth and get backed Garnet's memories, but even then he wasn't. He really liked her and wanted to be her friend.

This movie exceeded my expectations by a lot! Probably my favorite thing to come from Steven Universe so far!
Let's look at Steven throughout the movie....He was dismissive of the Diamonds and literally just teleported out on them. At least say you'll come back sheesh xD.
He let his anger get the better of him and that's the first time he poofs Spinel so quickly. Even when Amethyst was almost shattered and he fused to Stevonnie he only defended not poofed. This is the first time he gets angry fast.
He only wants happily ever after and ignores everything and everyone not helping him get their memories back. I get that it's stressful, but old steven wouldn't do that.
He leaves Spinel out multiple times.
He used Spinel for his own plans.
This movie was too show how Steven had changed for the worse. He didn't want responsibility and was forgetting empathy.
At the end he remembered who he was.

The movie also makes Steven who has always been selfless and caring for others, a little bit selfish, because of his want of a Happily Ever After... Which makes him a bit tired with all the Drama involved with his Mom's mistakes and decisions which usually always fall unto him to fix... probably being a teen thing... It shows when he regains his power saying that his very own power is the power to change(IDK what it means though)... In the End he realizes that his Happily Ever After could all the time and Memories he makes and has with his Friends and Family.
That was what Rebecca Sugar planned for the theme of the Movie. That it's ok to always keep moving and not being done with whatever stage of life you are in. It's about making the most out of those moments...

You know what grinds my gears. This movie became another set of lets beat up on Pinks past lol Not that it isn't well deserved but Yellow, White, and Blue have done much worst things and we don't even bat an eye at them in the movie because they existed long enough to not be seen as a prick. We haven't seen much of Rose aside from the tape and Gregs flashbacks and it definitely shows some growth at least. Also Spinel is the best character in the whole show
Pink was like the other Diamonds in that she didn't understand things personal emotional growth or even individual pain. You have to know before Steven came along, gems were all relegated to very strict roles and when their roles became irrelevant they were discarded. Pink didn't need Spinel anymore, she had outgrown her. So while it was a piece of shit move to abandon her, she saw it as merely convenient.
@@Toastybees Pink was the littlest of the diamonds. Its not like pink had much positive influences growing up since she simply thought having what they have is apart of being just as important. Plus she had a genuine friend in pink pearl so I think the time between white taking pearl and making spinel is important

Somehow some people blame Pink for corruption though which makes no sense since it was literally the diamonds who did that yet everyone seems to sweep that under the rug for them? I mean what pink did to spinel was fucked up but what's worse, being left alone for thousands years or being left in a constant state of pain as a corrupted gem for thousands of years. (unless bubbled as said by pearl).
Not to mention the other diamonds have literally committed a multitude of genocides and shatterings and who do you think pink gained some of her toxic mindset from? Of course this doesn't excuse pinks actions but ss you said we have to acknowledge that she grew as rose.
Rose seemed to genuinely care for her friends, and Greg, and Steven to the point where she gave up herself so steven could be born. I mean think about that in homeworld terms, a diamond giving up themselves for organic life. And I'm sure she would have gone back for spinel if she could. But the warps to places like that weren't accessible.

Okay so I agree with the fact that Steven was really dismissive towards Spinel when she was reset, but at least he actually tried to _fix_ the mistake he made. Unlike Pink, who just always ran away and hid from her problems.

I was so glad that Spinel got a happy ending. I was really disappointed in Steven in how he acted with Spinel. Especially how he treated her right after she turned off the injector. That was cruel. She had every right to be angry and him and Pink.
Yeah, I was quite suprised when Steven just left Spinel after turning off the injector, it was not okay at all. His powers are literally about empathy. Tho after a while of thinking about this,, our boy just wanted to get back his family and save the Earth what is um. pretty high stress situation if you ask me skdjssj Also I'm pretty sure he was really exhausted after Steg and all of this shit that just happened so I just can't blame him even if he made Spinel feel bad

Ok so i love this movie because theres so much greyness. I can totally understand steven distancing himself from the person currently attempting to murder everyone he loves even if she has lost her memories, though he does wish for her happiness when he says he wants her to find a better friend, even though he never says that will be him. As for spinel she is my new favorite gem. I can relate to her so hard with her abandonment issues and her anxiety making her flip out at the end and jump to conclussions. The final fight between her and steven has replaced garnet vs jasper as my alltime fave fight. And the moment she breaks down, asking herself outloud why shes doing this while in tears, makes me cry every single time i watch this movie, even when watching it in reactions. I just wish she hadnt gone with the diamonds. It feels like them replacing steven with spinel as an unhealthy coping mechanism forgetting over pink and it feels like spinel taking a shortcut instead of making an effort to become a better friend like she had just talked about
I mean...she did wish she could start over with someone new. She felt like she couldn't ever make up the way she came into Steven's life and how she almost killed everyone and everything under anger and rage. Besides I doubt this is the last time we'll see her since I'm sure Steven will come visit her and the diamonds.

I disagree, Steven owes nothing to Spinel. The fact that he doesn't even want to fight her and is almost only defensive I'm the fight is a lot. What Pink did to her was awful, but it don't erase that she cause Steven a lot of pain and almost end life on Earth.

Ok. I think what everyone here is saying isn't really what's going on. Steven was never being a jerk of selfish towards Spinel. I think he would have been fine with being Spinel's friend, face it, it's Steven, but I think he was trying to explain to Spinel that she doesn't have to be friends with one person. Steven doesn't have to be that friend. It could be anyone. It doesn't have to be "Pink" or someone she's assigned to be friends with/feels entitled to be friends with. Steven is trying to show Spinel that any good person would be her friend, and that not all people are like Pink. He's trying to show her that friendship is not a job your given, not a task you must take care of, but rather a thing made from care and kindness.
Here's how I think about it. Yes, Steven was sucky, but he had every right to be given the circumstances. Yes he's been empathetic to others that have attacked him and those he cares about, but just because he was nice before doesn't mean he's REQUIRED to be nice all the time. That can be self-sabotaging. Yes, what happened to Spinel was absolute trash, but Steven wasn't responsible for it, and his priority was to save the earth. Throughout past seasons, Steven had chances to fix things, he didn't have a direct time limit. But this time, it was either he fixes things in these 2 days, or it's ALL OVER. There were no alternatives, to booboo bandaids if he couldn't succeed right away. It was either get it done now or everyone dies. So you can be upset that he wasn't as empathetic, but can you really be surprised? After going through stuff with the diamonds, having an identity crisis, almost dying, plus 2 years of damage control, our boy was TIIIIIRED and just wanted to lay down 😂. But no. Here comes another one of his mom's messes that he needs to clean up.

When the Steven universe future comes and they would go crazy to see spinel back.
How is Steven being selfish even in the slightest? For all he knew, the first things Spinel did upon meeting him was set off an earth-destroying bioweapon and effectively kill most of his closest family. He didn't know until after Amethyst that they could even be brought back to who they were.
He neglected her in his attempt to fix what she broke, but honestly, I don't think I'd have blamed him if he had asked Bismuth to bubble her the moment they got to Little Homeworld.
And I say this as someone who teared up the moment she started singing, and I don't think I really stopped until the Diamonds sang for her. She didn't deserve any of what Pink did to her, but neither did Steven deserve what she tried to do to him.
