    I don't sand as, in the past, I've applied a base layer of polish - leave it on for several hours (I've done it overnite). Anyway, when 'dry', use a good rag and rub to a shine and Voila!, you have a smooth layer to begin spit-shining. You need the base layer to spit shine over as you really can't begin spit-shining new or unpolished leather easily. I've found it saves time. Works for me. Try it for yourself and see.

    Interesting. I was in the US Army Band, did plenty of shoe polishing, but never tried lighter fluid. Using a lighter to help melt the polish into the shoes helped alot, though.

  • @Soldier4USA2005
    @Soldier4USA2005 8 лет назад +10

    Rubbing alcohol is a better choice for melting polish, than using lighter fluid.
    I know these guys know their stuff, but I have used lighter fluid and it's riskier to use (when it comes to accidents). Rubbing alcohol will evaporate much quicker and will have less of a chance of dangerous accidents. It's also something that would potentially require special storage, due to it being flammable.

    • @EpicGifted
      @EpicGifted 7 лет назад

      Rubbing alcohol is more flammable than lighter fluid.

    • @Soldier4USA2005

      EpicGifted
      Based upon what???
      Rubbing alcohol needs a direct flame to light, where lighter fluid only needs the fume to light. Just like gasoline.

  • @nelfar213000

    I start with a base coat and let sit overnight, my second coat is applied and I like the lighter method direct to the boot, I then apply third coat by lighting the polish directly in the can. from there I'll apply two to three more coats using ice water inbetween coats. This can take about 4-5 hrs. Spending the time in the beginning save time later.

    • @OlafoWaffle
      @OlafoWaffle 5 лет назад

      The base coat would be better if he used a high quality cream polish to start with.

    Edge Dressing. You can find it wherever you buy your shoe polish. Best stuff is in a glass bottle with a dabbing swab connected to the cap. Just like with shining the shoe's, you have to build up the layers.
    .....I was in The Old Guard, Presidential Salute Battery. I was in when we had to shine shoes AND boots on a daily basis.

    Sorry this is late just found your comment- the lighter fluid "thins" the polish out, if that makes sense. It will not harm the leather, but it can strip it of all polish if you are not careful, and that may not be what you want to do....

  • @rincon3315

    So when you wear them and the return to barracks to shine them again, are you using sandpaper again on top of the new shine or is the sandpaper only for the initial shine? Is the sandpaper part for the routine every time you shine?!?

    Different reliefs also have different standards and things they focus more heavily on. This video doesn't really cover the whole story of shining shoes. For example, the spray water bottle. Back in the day, the guys with epic shoes used a little bowl of ice water. Using lighter fluid was to smooth damaged polish and can cause little crystal specks over time that can only be taken out by stripping the shoes completely.

    how can you expect them to fight like soldiers if they dont look like soldiers? this really just builds discipline. i never served unfortunately because of a reckless childhood but i was in JROTC and also in the Ranger Class and you could tell who was more disciplined bye there uniform. shine of their boots and brass. placement of there ribbons and ensigns. creases in uniform and lack of wrinkles. also these people where in better shape and made better grads too. Damn if only i could redo my childhood, i might be a future general.

    Hey man thanks for the video. I have a question for you... What do you do if a boot gets dirty? So for example say I'm in the academy and we run through dirt or mud. The polishing kit doesn't seem to have anything that can handle this type of massive dirt and obviously it needs to be removed before polishing.
    Last but not least, what about those boot care kits which include waterproofer and conditioner? Thank you.

      +FlyingHangman It's water in the spray bottle.
      The lighter fluid is used in the lid of the can, with some polish, to apply melted polish.

    • @dmmedic34

      These are standard Bates uniform shoes- but the Tomb Guards have modifications. First the sole of the shoe is built up, so the form of your movement as you walk is smooth and “rounded”- no heel first then toe kind of thing. Second there are metal plates in the sole, and also mounted to the inside of the heel to give the clicking sounds

    Back in my day you cake the boots with Nugget shoe polish first. Then you Burn. With a candle. Once u do that you cake with kiwi polish. Let it sit. Then you dry slick with cotton to avoid that water mark you know the stain that gets white on the boot but every man have his own style. But. You also got too polish the sole. Off those lether sole parade boot.
