  • Most Empaths and Sensitive People have a habit of disassociating or leaving their bodies without really even knowing it. This type of dissociation is much less severe than the mental health definition but has similar signs with milder dissociation signs like feeling foggy, not being able to feel your body or get grounded or feel centered.
It can be difficult to know how to deal with dissociation as an Empath, but it's important for HSPs to learn how to actually stay in your body and learn how to be centered even when things are stressful.

This is a very interesting topic. I can feel myself leaving my body constantly, especially when around certain individuals. In an odd way, I start to feel like I’m the person I am with. The hand motions, the gestures, just about everything. It is like I’m not even on the ground.

Hi @Brandon Evans, this is pretty common and a normal thing to experience. The first step can be at the conscious brain level that you would like to adjust this and to know that it's possible to relate and even empathize with people without taking on their stuff. When we're so far into other people's fields and experiences, it also means that we're draining out our own vital energy / prana in a way that doesn't really help the other person and has a harmful effect on you. Nice work on building your Observer Mind and catching yourself in these patterns. That's an important first step. 😀👍🏽 Leslie

This is really great! YES. I agree 100%...aaand I am a psychic medium and spiritual life coach that spends a great deal of time in the astral realms talking to dead people, helping Earthbound Spirits over, decoding my clients' variables and very practical intel...hence I do a tree grounding and clearing/protection prior that connects me to Divine Source above as well as the center of this Earth, so I become a conduit of this energy so during my readings I'm very grounded and "on the charger" so to speak. I receive a great deal of benefit and earthly healing, and find that I'm not as spacey as even regular folks. I hope people evolve to incorporate this when they're wanderings about the higher dimensions.

I am healing from a life of dissociation and watching this was interesting. I was super excited up till you said the phrase. It instantly made me feel offended.... it was so crazy. After thinking about it more I am guessing that it is my brain trying to protect me???? I dissociated first at a very young age. Now that I am healing I know that stay present is super important and that the fact that my brain was offended isn't healthy. Any thoughts?

Hi Shanna, I really honor your courage in reaching out here, thank you. I think you're doing a good job of using your Observer Mind to watch and examine your reaction without totally believing it at first, this is powerful. It seems likely that is was a kind of protectionary mechanism. One of the helpful things to come back to is "what was the result in the body?" I'd keep practicing and see if it changes over time. I love this topic! I've done a lot of work on this for myself and feel like I'm doing well with it, but I'm so excited for this deeper information! I never put together the physical symptom link, I dealt with anemia much of my life. And I completely agree about astral travel, so I'm glad to hear someone talking about the dangers associated with it, when in fact we have the ability to connect with those planes in a healthy way and NOT leave our bodies! 🙌🏼💛

Is this another way to describe masking to fit in with different groups/ individuals? How does this tend to manifest in neuro-divergent people? Is it even possible to notice if you have alexithymia?

    • @lesliehuddartl.ac.9937

Thanks for your question. I want to state firstly that I am predominantly work with empathic, highly sensing individuals and do not have a lot of experience working with neurodivergent folks on the spectrum so I'm not speaking from a place of niche experience here for your question.
I would say that dissociation is still significantly different then masking. The main trade being that in masking we're often intentionally or consciously changing behavior to fit in versus more as a less conscious reflex being less connected with ourselves.
Part of what we're talking about with disassociation does require a certain amount of "interoception" or the ability to tune in with what's happening in the physical body or emotional sensations which tends to be more challenging for neurodivergent folks, those with alexithymia and autism spectrum disorders in general.
Here's is an article that may also be helpful in explaining more. livingautism.com/alexithymia-empathy-autism/

@@lesliehuddartl.ac.9937 Thanks for the article. I'm aware of alexithymia's effect on interoception, but have never seen it used to support the outdated idea that autistic individuals are unable to experience empathy in a way NT's would understand! We certainly can & do empathise!! Sometimes to the point of it becoming painful or unhealthy.
In fact, it's unfortunate that NT's seem unable (unwilling?) to empathise fully with ND & AA individuals' experiences, in order to include them more fully. I'd be interested to find out what proportion of uptake you get from NT versus ND/ AA people, but I'm guessing you don't know.
The fact that you work with "empathic, highly sensing individuals" does not mean none of your customers are ND/ AA, since people with these neuro-conditions are often both empathic & highly sensing - we just tend to have trouble processing all the data. Perhaps it's time to get some further training, so you can offer more inclusive courses & help more people in future?

@@lauraburystedmundsyoga8231very well said. Most autistic people have a lot of empathy and all are highly sensitive. It is just the outside shell people see.

@@lesliehuddartl.ac.9937I agree completely with question starter. Most autistic people are highly empathic and all of them are highly sensitive. When autistic people are sensory overwhelmed and need to rest but can’t, the protective shell comes up. It is a way of masking. It mostly happens subconsciously, because it was added as a coping mechanism for unpleasant feelings and experiences, long ago. One of these ways op coming is dissociation. From all people, I am sure autistic people dissociate a lot more. Just because they are so highly sensitive.
It is no doubt that there are autistic individuals in your clientèle.

@@mautse7120 thanks for your reply! The lack of autism awareness amongst professionals, must surely contribute to/ exacerbate the "double empathy problem". It is any wonder autists are more at risk of poor mental & physical health & far more likely to end their own lives than allistics?!
