Thanks for the video, I'm going to test this out, I've seen a lot of lighting engines for gamemaker studio that look nice, but the second you add a few lights and objects into a decent sized room, the FPS starts to drop left and right, so hopefully this is an efficient engine, at the very least it'll be something fun to play with.

are your bulb objects importing along with the package import, or did you bring those in separately--I'm assuming they're provided by the bulb release?

Sorry for the late reply, working with no desktop for a bit :). They were separate, and made from objects found in the bulb repository.

I wonder how you change the alpha value from the surface itself? Do you have any thoughts on this? I aim to make brighter rooms by reducing the alpha from the 'fog/shroud' surface that covers all spaces that have no lights.

So looking at the latest version of Bulb you can pass in the ambient color (so you could make it a lighter color). And there is also access to SetAmbientColor(color) that you can use.
You could also have a "zone" that when you walked through it, it would find the BulbRendered object and change the ambient color to something brighter, and then vice versa if you walked out or through another zone.

what about making the player cast a shadow... not a light. hows that work out???

You would want to attach an occluder to your player and have it follow it. You can either create a new object, and have it following it, or take the code that is in one of the occluders and put it in your player instead of the light code :)

@@GameMakerCasts i dont think the occluder would update its shadows... while itself moves or follows the player... or atleast thats what i experienced when i tried this engine out
