I was in there on Tuesday morning delivering more concrete culvert sections. Grabbed a photo as I guessed that the bridge would be gone by the time I returned. Thanks for sharing your video.
Said it once. Said it a thousand times. The GCR should have never been scrapped during the beeching cuts. It has everything needed for HS2. The infrastructure was built to last centuries. Such a shame that it’s all being demolished. I used to live in Leicester and year after year more of the past infrastructure has disappeared
The alignment or curves of the GCR did not allow for for speeds above 110mph. More importantly, it did not go anywhere near Birmingham. The entire point of HS2 is to release capacity from stations like New Street which is the country's worst bottleneck.
I guess we can all be thankful that there is a 19 mile preservation movement between Leicester north and Ruddington, still keeping the spirit of the old GCR alive.
It is very sad to see a fantastic part of our railway history dying! BUT with Death Comes Rebirth! I hope they do keep something of the GCR somewhere along that section, they probably won't but hey maybe if certain parts aren't life expired they could be put to use further up the Great Central Railway at a preserved site maybe! As I write this I just heard you say you had spoken to someone and they maybe donating some of the Side wall bricks to one of the heritage sites up further! I hope they had done that at Finmere and donated some bits that could go to "Tarting up" East Leake station further up I know they're not looking to reopen it but make it look presentable for when one day in the not too distant future the GCR becomes an InterCity Railway once again well Nottingham (Ruddington) - Leicester North
Sad indeed. I peered over that bridge many times last few years to see what was going on and wasn't more than a few years ago that saw an actual train moving under it.
Those capping stones wilprobablylbe reused on so e of the new ridges that the modern GCR is having to bui. D to reconnect their two sections of line at Loughborough. I can't remember the name of the project but there are several videos about it.
As last comment..Always sad when Engineering brick goes. There is no evidence left of great railways. Nice to leave a bit. Sadly everything has to go, some things get replaced by metal Not the same
Very sad to see. For 124 years that bridge did everything it was designed to do and probably would have lasted another 124 years given the chance. Still, onwards and downwards we go.
No, the condition of that bridge has been bad for a long time. The deck beems are badly corroded, and the North side brickwork has very large cracks in it.
Like everyone else, I'm sad to see the death of this bridge - mainly because of the amount of times I drove over it in double-decker buses back in the day - But also because it's the last link with the old station.

I heard they are saving some of the capping stones, let’s hope they keep their word as needed for GCR preservation

Definitely ! We must not forget that

Be good to know that they’ve done some good at preserving something

Great video. I would rather have seen this great landmark remain than see HS2 built.
No sign of any new bridge or diversion. Are they just going to build a new one in its place?
Looking on streetview it looks like you leaning on the now dismantled wall !
To coin a phrase, this is the price of progress.
True words, I suppose the same time, no interest in saving a bit of history.
A sad sight indeed
Stings to see the old bridge being smashed like this 😢
Farewell GCR - could so easily have been reopened 🤷🏻♂️

@@professorjamesmoriarty5191 Oh, right. But apart from all that ... ?
I'm looking forward to your continuing coverage of the demo process.
Will the road go on the now vacated track rather than over it or be cut off and nolonger usable
@@neilfranklin5644 They will build a new road bridge to span the HS2 lines.
@@DaveFiggley ah OK so the new line going through the same area as old line
The level of activity shows why HS2 is over budget nobody is working
You're not wrong.
Even more boring.
Thanks for your support
So glad you see it that way.@@NWP_EXPLORING
