      Anita, Crista has done several about adoption, although the screens will look outdated because Ancestry has updated it a couple times. Best way to find them is to type the following in the search box on youtube: Crista Cowan adoption.

      Yes I'm in ireland and it was a shock when I found so many dna matches in America who were adopted and sent there from ireland because nobody in my family seems to know how these adopted people are related to us because it could have been taboo etc. I'd love to be able to find out...I know we might never know exactly but I think ancestry could still help. For example an adopted person and a woman came up as a mutual match in my DNA matches...I dont know if that woman is that adopted persons DNA sibling??? I think ancestry could let us know what relationship the mutual DNA matches are to each other..because it would at least help eliminate or narrow down the connections potentially:)

    I have a crazy question about Thrulines. I'll try to make it somewhat brief.
    My grandfather was adopted. When I got my DNA results about a month ago, and the Thrulines popped up, I got a 4th cousin match, suggesting that my Grandfather's adopted mother was his actual mother.
    So I put her on my tree and immediately started researching trees for my Grandfather's paternal side. I narrowed everything to 1 particular family, which matches a surname on some letters from the North Carolina children's home sent to my Grandfather when he was alive. The only problem is that this particular surname is his maternal side according to what was given to him.
    So I tore that side of the tree down and plugged in the woman who fit the age description of the records as his mother. When the Thrulines came through the next day, the lines went through what would be my Grandfather's grandparents, and a box named "Unknown 2nd Great grandfather" was put in the Thrulines. Needless to say, my Thrulines broke down.
    Now the question. How did Thrulines figure out that this was a paternal family and not a maternal one? If I have it right (and I'm pretty sure I do) there may be a fraudulent, sealed original birth certificate that has thrown my Grandfather off of the right trail and would suggest that his adopted mother really pulled a fast one.

    • @CristaCowan
      @CristaCowan 5 лет назад

      Without looking at your matches (specifically how many cM you share with them and which groups you've been able to identify) and your tree, I am going to have a hard time commenting. But, ThruLines doesn't "figure out" maternal versus paternal. It simply looks at what you have put into your family tree and tries to construct a place for each of your DNA Matches based on what is in their trees.
      If you want to share more specifics about his particular 4th cousin match, I might be able to provide more direction.

    • @buckeyebaptist1976
      @buckeyebaptist1976 5 лет назад +1

      @@CristaCowan I wouldn't think Thrulines would "figure it out" who was maternal vs. paternal. The issue is that in my tree, I put my suspected Great grandfather's sister on my tree as the parent of my Grandfather. On the Thrulines, it said "Unknown Great Grandfather" as the parent of my Grandfather instead of what I had on my tree. I got screenshots of it on my phone.
      I thought maybe Thrulines might sort out all of the tree matches. With 24+ matches in that part of the tree, I thought it wouldn't coordinate every Thruline correctly.
      I'll give you some specifics when I get a chance. I'll make my tree public, if you want to take a peak.

If someone had a certain ethnicity group and wanted to see all the matches who shared that same ethnicity, that would help some find where these matches fit on their tree.

    Not really thrilled with ThruLines because they are based on other family trees that may be filled with errors. They keep listing ancestors as half-this or half-that when I know they are full ancestors and not half anything. Plus the potential ancestor suggestions in the ThruLines are often way off target.

    Is there an easy way to delete multiple duplicates all in one go or merge them easier in one go? It's very slow going in one by one. Some reason I've ended up with about 5 duplicates of each member. This normally happens when I copy another DNA matches tree to mine and it creates duplicates..or if another person updates my tree not knowing the person already there...or even when I add a new person.

    Is it possible to add more group options and or overlap dna matches I control or to be able to easy switch colours or overlap multiple DNA matches? I control my dads DNA match and mine. I can also log into my mothers. Is it possible to gain ownership of my mothers dna? To transfer it into my account? Also I find I am grouping my dna matches and then separately I've to group my dads DNA in his profile which I control. Is there a way to do this at the same time because obviously my DNA and his overlaps. It's slow grouping matches twice (I mean grouping into Marshall's or Marshall who married kane etc). I love the grouping idea but it's still could be improved. I end up with different colours for groups in my moms dna profile and it all becomes messy. Be nice to be able to control all of our DNA matches from a central pool???

    Also is there a way to colour code adopted people or suggest how they might be related? I've found an adopted person and they are related to 4th cousins in both my mother and my fathers family- it's like their parents are connected by my mothers ancestor and my fathers ancestor getting together....is there a way to help us find out how adopted people are connected easier? I know the DNA matches but I dont know if the mutual dna matches are brothers or sisters to that adopted person...maybe it is possible to show relationships of DNA matches to each other and a function to group them. For example if my cousin and auntie match with me as DNA matches...that ancestry tells me that they are a mother/daughter connection. This might help with me know how adopted people fit in with our DNA matches.

    I continue to LOATHE ThruLines because so many trees are done poorly. I had one match vie ThruLines when I guy decided he was a descendant through a sister of one of my ancestors. He had no documentation and "just a hunch". Not only was he wrong but she TOO is one of my direct ancestors because of intermarriage between second cousins and that was very well documented.
    The maternal/paternal sorting isn't showing up on my page. I assume that's because my father died before this type of DNA testing. My mom has done the testing and is on Ancestry so I don't know why this feature wouldn't work for me.

      I dont think I ever used DNA circles but I love the Thrulines concept. I think it's bad form for you to say people do their tree "poorly"...clearly not everyone knows what the correct links are. In ireland for example we have zero documents before 1865 or very few. Most of my 4th cousin dna matches pre date a connection before 1865 but we have no knowledge of how. I have requested ancestry to allow people to join trees together but for somehow have link which says "dont know which relative we are connected to" but we know it's from the one lineage. I think that would help has I would like to have a perfect tree but then I dont always know the exact link of my DNA matches as we dont have documents in ireland beyond 1865

    • @CristaCowan
      @CristaCowan 5 лет назад

      There is no outstanding issues with ThruLines that I am aware of. You say you are missing your entire maternal side? I would recommend doing the following:
      1. Go into your family tree and go into your person profile for yourself.
      2. Click on EDIT | Edit Relationship. Make sure that your mother's relationship to you is set as BIOLOGICAL on the right-hand side of that screen.
      3. Go into your mother's profile on the tree and do the same for both of her parents.
      4a. If you had to change any of those to biological, wait 24-48 hours after making the change and the ThruLines for your mother's side should show up.
      4b. If you did not have to make any changes (meaning everything was already set to biological) then please reply here with a copy of the URL to your profile in your tree and I will have someone take a look at it right away.

    The reason I have so many questions is because in ireland our records only go back to 1865 and then it's very slow for our library to copy church records...they are also not so easy to search through online. Ancestry kinda assumes that because the USA has so many records...that i in ireland will know how I'm connected to the usa dna matches....this is not easy because in ireland we might only have photos or stories back to the late 1890s and therefore no record of what happened in 1775 or 1845 with our ancestors during famine etc. Is there a way ancestry can help irish members with our lack of records??? I'm hoping to piece together my family based on the info the usa DNA matches give me

    Could you have an option to add DNA matches trees to my tree even if we do not know the exact ancestors we are linked from. For example, my granny was a Finn but our ancestor is Leonard Finn and our DNA matches ancestor is Thomas finn....because I live in Ireland I cannot find records pre 1865 for Leonard finn and how he is connected to thomas finn. Please can you let us still add them to my tree for my other relatives to look at and someone might know how the two are connected at a later date.

    Also is there a feature to see if I could be related to famous americans? I looked at some distant dna matches and they have John Marshall USA secretary of state as their ancestor. I contacted the John Marshall website and they were not interested in irish relatives and only his "American descendants"....however I think it would be very interesting to know that I'm a descendant from the same family who emigrated to the usa and changed history and involved in the foundation of the usa. Could that be a feature? That well known historic or famous Americans come up as a potential DNA match?

      In order to remove a branch of people from your tree you have two options:
      1. Disconnect them from your tree by deleting the inaccurate relationship. This leaves a "floating" tree within your tree.
      2. Use a software program, like Family Tree Maker, to sync with your Ancestry tree. This has a feature that allows you to split your family tree.
      Hope that helps!

      Hi JM. Go into your family tree (the one that is connected to your DNA results) and click on you in the tree and go to your profile. From there, click on EDIT | Edit Relationships. On the right hand side across from your father's name, is he listed as "Biological" or "Unknown?" It needs to be biological. If you have to fix it, give ThruLines 24-48 hours to repopulate. If it already says "biological" then go to your father's profile and check the Edit Relationships screen for him.
      If that doesn't fix it, or if that is not the problem, be sure to reply back. I will need the URL of your profile page in your tree in order to have it investigated further. Thanks!

    Also I love the maps options. I notice there are now two ancestry apps for android??? The new ancestry DNA seems to be missing alot of the nice features of the original ancestry app. Is there a way to see dna matches in a map form??? So far I just see all my dna matches on the one map of the world. It would make it easier if I knew dna matches could be related through the same relatives because of where they went to. For example 8th distant cousins in Iowa contacted me because their ancestors came from my village in ireland. However I'm not familiar with usa geography. It be useful if the dna matches location was came up next to their username in the list and then I could click in...because the likely hood is that everyone from my village in Ireland all traveled to the same village in the usa .....but we in ireland never knew this!!! This would help greatly as maybe I could search graveyard records for other Marshall's in the same village in Iowa who most likely are my relatives....people from ireland stuck together in clusters going to the usa and the migration plus DNA match/grouping would be nice to label in my dna list.

      When you are viewing ThruLines, you will see the path of relationship between you and a DNA Match. If anyone in that path is not already in your tree, it will have a dotted line box around their name and information. When you click on that, the Evaluation panel opens up on the right.

    Also could you please highlight some surnames do not have the same spelling when people went to the USA. I was not aware of this until I found DNA matches with funny surnames and then realised that their surname is spelt how Americans would pronounce it and not how irish people spell the surname- hence immigration records might be different. For example Smith can be spelt Smyth. Or Coughlan in ireland is spelt Conklin in america.

      Hi Vaye! I'm so glad you found me. If your husband has a Cherokee ancestor, they should be pretty easy to find in records. The Cherokee are one of the most well documented U.S. native tribes. Just follow the records. Look for them in the U.S. federal census every ten years, working your way back in time. Are they living in a time and place where the Cherokee were known to have lived? If so, check the records of the "Five Civilized Tribes" that Ancestry has available online for additional information about them, their ancestors, and their tribal affiliation.

    ThruLines does not appear to handle multiple marriages well. I am related to a 2nd-great-grandfather thru BOTH of his wives. One of the ThruLines displays his "card" with the photo that I provided, but he appears with 2 cards in ThruLines and the 2nd "card" is to a potential ancestor that shows a DNA Match image and lots of "extra information" including the phrase "DNA Match HS" as part of this ancestor's name. Why doesn't it just show the the "card" with his photo from MY tree twice? IMHO, it would be so much better if ThruLines were presented as a standard Pedigree chart rather than as huge "cards" that do not make it easy to see the information in pedigree form.
