Glory of Dusk - Raga Puriya Kalyan

- Raga Puriya Kalyan is a melody that is traditionally played at the dusk (known as "sandhi-prakash"). It is a combination of two Ragas - Puriya and Yaman. Its mood is somber, meditative, contemplative, devotional and like many Ragas played at dusk, it makes one contemplate about life.

This is a recording of a live concert performed at Los Altos Public Library. On Tabla is Shri Ravi Gutala and on Bansuri, I was accompanied by my student, Akshay Naresh.

Left India almost 50 years ago now, but the music is still in my soul. If you've never been in rural India as the heat of the afternoon finally relents in the gathering stillness of night, you'd never know how mood capturing this is.

Actually it was a real gas back then, if you like steam locomotives as I do, a bit frustrating sometimes, yes, but worth it.
Well, you know, I often had the same thoughts while i was there. Yes, its dirty, filthy in places, dusty, stinking , rotten, infested, and I saw some things there I wished i hadn't, but time has a way of mellowing all that, and most of what i remember know is not the shit hole stuff, but the people and places I still know. Its not the sensual things that matter in the end, but what a place burns into your heart. Consider yourself lucky you don't have to live in the 3rd world, because a lot of people I know that do are one hell of a lot better in their own heart and soul than some that don't.
the constand sound on the backround is Tanpura. its always present in all the indian classical music. it gives a base and support of the Sur to the permorming artist.

As the clock struck 2.30 am and my eyes began to droop, an incense stick, a lava lamp and a comfy, familiar room made for the perfect environment in which to appreciate this piece.

Puriya Kalyan is a sandhi prakash raaga--Raga of gaudhuli vela- means when cows return to their shed at the sun set...this recital is sooo beautiful takes you to the visualization of scenic beauty of sandhya

Even keeping my eyes closed listening to Bansuriflute I could make out that it is by Prasad Bhandarkar. Very soothing-it is dusk time in New York.

I love Indian music when it is minus the bongo drums and fast tempo. Such as this composition and performance. It is wonderfully consciousness-altering. Thank you.
relaxing in a small punt-reclining with my arms resting over the sides-floating down a river-somewhere hot and dry-but with a small breeze on my face-all i can hear are the bristle of the tall reed grasses on either side of the riverbank-and in the far distance i can hear the faint noises of children playing-and the call of birds-total bliss

The time-theory of Indian classical music is born of a profound awareness of the effects (subtle or overt) which the various times of the day and night have on the human psyche. In morning you should listen to bilawal and bhairav ragas they charge you with energy for new day.
This is evening raga to calm down before sleep.
Sunsets are also beautiful--Dusk
"Saanj ke Dulhan" is also a lovely expression.

Prasad: Very well played. Perfect sur, raga swaroop and slow and steady development of the raga. The medium tempo composition in Zaptaal is also so pleasing. Enjoyed it thoroughly. No wonder it has been heard more than 650,000.
