Rick Nelson was a nice guy, and a gentleman. I shook his hand after a concert with "The Stone canyon Band", at Mr. Kelly's in Chicago in 1979. I briefly mentioned watching "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet", and he got a kick out of that. Rick died to young, like my other friend Warren Zevon. Both great artists.
Such a lovely voice, inherited from his mother, Harriet Hilliard, and by all accounts a very nice guy. He didn't get the credit he deserved in his life, maybe because so many people watched him grow up on TV, but he was a genuinely good entertainer. Died way too soon.
I used to listen to "Lonesome Town" on my sister's record player in about 1960. It only played 45 rpm records on it. I believe this song was released on the Mercury or RCA label. We also used to listen to it on the jukebox at the local pub, while pounding down martinis, in the 1970's. Rick Nelson had a profound influence on me, because of his good voice, athleticism, and a great sense of humor while acting on "Ozzie and Harriet". David Nelson rehearsed his lines on the show. Rick adlibbed.
Rick's greatest song in my opinion, written by Baker Knight. I saw it performed originally on "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet". Ozzie was walking in from the outside, as Ricky was finishing the song. He admonished,"Nice job Rick". This was in the dim year of 1958, when life was much simpler. This rendition was also great, as Rick never let down his fans singing his best songs till the end. He left us at 45. Way too soon.
Rick Nelson was a very underrated performer. Ask Randy Meisner who played bass for Rick's band in the early 70's? Rick Nelson was not only "The Hollywood Hillbilly", but was instrumental in the development fo Country Rock. He recorded several great Country Rock albums between 1967, and 1972. Mostly forgotten.
Like many great recording artist that died way too young. A great tragedy for all music fans and music managers . SO MANY left us way too early but always in our hearts and mines forever❤️
This video was taken weeks before he died .. and Rick never looked better or played better. He was at his best when he was called by the man above. We thank God for his music and that videos like this have surfaced to show the talent of this man. RIP Rick and all the members of the Stone Canyon Band.
are you sure this was not in Toronto--Feb at a club called 'Diamond Lils' in The Skyline hotel. I was sitting side stage and between songs, called out for 'Lonesome Town'. Rick finally nodded to the band and stepped forward. as he began, he looked down at me and smiled which is seen on this video. I admit it could happen at other concerts but quite the co-incidence...and he is wearing the same shirt....cheers
@serpico56 I stand corrected.. I should have said months not weeks .. this show was in Waukegan Illinois on a cold nasty day but his music warmed everyones heart. It was thrilling to see the band sit back and Rick walk forward and do this on his own. I was at this show and Rick never sounded better.
@NitroManXoX This was actually an error on my part, when I initially uploaded the video, I put 1985, as that was the info I had at the time. Someone corrected me and said it was actually 1983, so I updated the info. So that made it look like you were incorrect, when in all actuality it was my information that was initially incorrect. Sorry for any confusion!
This guy never got the recognition he deserved & that is truly sad.
That song is a gem. I play it at campfires sometimes. It always draws attention, even from the young people.
Ikr, and Ricky Nelson has such amazing hair

Zevon and Rick are so underrated, up there for me with Dylan and Brian Wilson
His sons Matthew and Gunner are keeping his music going in tribute. They sound great too.
Excuse me...correct spelling- Gunnar

sad songs are always the best
couldn't agree more. Songs, movies that evoke real emotion are worthwhile....the rest?.. just guff.
I agree such emotion in them

I heard this in the eighties as a kid thanks to my mom and when I saw pulp fiction in theaters at 12, I was surprised
He died in a plane crash in 1985.
actually the plane landed, he die in a fire :'(
Unfortunately, he did, and it was a pitiful shame the reason that hunk of junk crashed-a faulty cabin heater 😢
Thank you for posting this. At 71 I still listen to and play many of his songs. He was a wonderful singer, actor, guitarist and performer.
I cried when I first heard lonesome two the first song I learned to play on the guitar
I love this man. Very talented and beautiful. Rest in peace

my father Bobby played guitar with Rick from 79 - 85.
Touches you deeply ...which is, as it should be ...part of your job, as singer :)))

This is actually professionally shot, it does state it is Chicago. I heard somewhere that it was filmed for MTV but never aired.

Back then when the audience wasn't recording the whole show with stupid phones
At the same time though, how great would it be if they had been. Think of how many more videos like this would be available now.
😙😘😚
