  • Who is Donald Trump? In her highly anticipated new book, Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America, the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman chronicles his life from his rise in New York City to the White House.
Join us as Haberman discusses what she learned during interviews with hundreds of sources as well as numerous interviews over the years with Donald Trump himself, a man she says is both a complicated and often contradictory historical figure who pushed American democracy to the brink.
This is an important political event you won’t want to miss.

What I felt was his most dangerous quality was his boundless ignorance. Were there comments by the staff about how dangerously ignorant he was? I doubt that to this day, Drumph could not list the three branches of government.

I've not come across anyone who used the word "ignorance" but John Bolton comes pretty close. It's in one of the online, full-length interviews for the PBS show "Frontline." He states that no one could ever come to the office well-informed of all the issues that a president must address and that's why it's imperative that he get the best possible advisors. Bolton said that Trump had no interest in reading anything from his advisors and seemed to have this belief that instinct would tell him what to do when a decision actually had to be made. In Michael Wolff's, "Fire and Fury," he quotes an email from Gary Cohn: "It's worse than you can imagine. An idiot surrounded by clowns. Trump won't read anything--not one-page memos, not the brief policy papers; nothing. He gets up halfway through meetings with world leaders because he is bored ... Trump is less a person than a collection of terrible traits .... I am in a constant state of shock and horror."

Trump is an ideal case study of the Dunning-Kruger effect. Despite being alarmingly ignorant & entirely incurious, he has full confidence in his "instincts/gut feelings" & his "very large brain."
He also seems thoroughly convinced that knowledge can be inherited genetically; he frequently mentions his "genius" uncle, John Trump, a former MIT professor*.
      *citation needed
While touring labs at the CDC, he mused that perhaps he should've followed in his uncle's footsteps. Donald claimed the CDC scientists were impressed by how much he understood; he credited it to being "a natural, because of his uncle."

Thank you for this program. I was enthralled from beginning to end.
It's easy to see Donald Trump's motivations, between having read Mary Trump's first book and how, watching Ms Haberman speak, hearing how Donald Trump's later relationship with himself developed during the years of his presidency. I'm no psychologist but I might be someone that knows a little something about people. it is not hard to see him as a pitiable, sick man. One in desperate need of help. I don't see him as a stupid man Just as a badly damaged person
I also recommend seeing Colbert's recent interview with Howard Stern. Both of them are highly intelligent. I am grateful that I never met Donald Trump. I might have ended up as another Michael Cohen.
Anyone that has experienced Trump from afar might feel the same way. Donald Trump is like a stage hypnotist without the charm. Supposedly, no one can do anything that is contrary to their nature. If that is so, Trump must have wanted to get caught. His own deathwish, as it is called by psychologists, is responsible for his legal troubles.
It is also easy to see why he lost the election in 2020 and why he continues to try to hold onto power. Even through his many legal problems. Any person that is remotely connected to show business. would see Trump's bloviations for what they are.. Doctors, lawyers, teachers. Blacks, whites, men, women. Even suburban housewives.
This comment is already too long, so I'll stop here.
We still don' know what will happen in November of 2022. But if it is anything like what January of 2021, heaven help us all.

Whenever the hosts crack jokes about Trump or get a laugh from the audience, she is silent. She seems to think reducing Trump to a punchline or a fool is a big mistake that helped him win his first election. She clearly believes he is dangerous and laughing at him emboldens him (being seen as foolish, weak or less wealthy is his Achilles heal) and distracts us from the very real threat.

Joining that movement doesn't have the social pull that it would have if we were all isolated. Thats one positive effect of being so online.
