NMLRA Field Agent Ethan strikes out on the trail with nothing but his hunting pouch and his Hawken.
We're on one of the NMLRA "Woods walks" at the Walter Cline Range in Friendship, Indiana this week testing out our Traditions St. Louis Hawken just like the Mountain Men of the 1840s would have. Woods walks are a popular muzzleloading setting for competitors and plinkers alike. Many kinds of wood walk matches are made up of targets of various sizes at unknown distances. It's a challenge with any firearm, but an iron-sighted muzzleloader makes it all the more fun. Add some friends for some spirited ribbing and you are sure to have a great time.

We used to live near an archery range like that, a couple of miles walk trough the redwoods shooting at various targets. It was very fun and relaxing. Now we live near gun ranges in the desert not much fun walking around there.

I wish I was closer to that range. That looks like a lot of fun. The range where I shoot is very nice but I have to stand under the shelter in just one spot. At least it is free for me to shoot since I work there. By the way, I joined NMLRA last week.

I joined the nmlra just because I love muzzleloading but I’m in Idaho! I’m thinking maybe someday I’ll road-trip out. Excuse to camp and go shooting.

That looks like a ton of fun. I'd love to experience that but, I don't know of any ranges like that around me. Anyway, thanks for taking us along with you, it was enjoyable.

@@nationalmuzzleloadingrifle8871 Thank you. Many years ago we used to go out to the desert to do our shooting but now, I live in an agricultural area and the farmers frown on people shooting around their land which is mostly private property. Soon we hope to relocate up to Idaho which is a more gun friendly state.

    Hi Ethan:
I always had much more fun shooting the woods walks with other shooters during a competition. To my mind, being by ones self seems lackluster in the fun category? Just my opinion. I don't shoot anymore for health reason, but I love watching other BP shooters shoot.
Thanks for the great videos and the crafting build alongs. I'm an avid accoutrements maker. I really love your and Jeff Luke's videos when you post them. Please, both of you make more. :~)))))
    God bless:

Looks like fun. Wish I was closer to the range. Did you run a patch down the barrel between shots or perhaps every 2-3 shots?

Good for you Shannon. My Great Plains is now getting a little heavy for this aging old fart. Maybe with a shooting stick I could match your score. LOL

I like the Traditions Hawken except for ONE thing, that rear sight. I want one with a rear dovetail so I could put some traditional style sights on it. I know the new sights are supposedly easier to see, but I don't like those sights that mount up to the barrel like that, I want old school sights on my muzzleloader.
