Hey u!!! I wanted to mention... a Power Steering gear box from a 73-87 Square Body will bolt right up to that truck! I had a 69 C/20 and took the Power Steering assembly from a 75 and installed it. It was a direct bolt in and with 3 turns lock to lock... steering with 1 finger was a breeze, Have fun yall !!!!!

Every time I see Garfield it takes me back to the 70s and 80s when I worked for an electrical contractor. He had a Ford 4x4 pickup with a utility box like that and I used it to make service calls to some pretty remote mountain top radio relay stations. We installed power to the radio towers and the battery backup systems. I think of all the people that sat behind the wheel of Garfield over the years and the work they did. The miles they drove, the sandwiches they ate, the places they saw. So much unknown history in that great little truck.

I love the fact that the signs on the side say "Roadside service" and the first roadside service was on the truck itself. So the signs are correct, just not in the expected way. I love the Truck BTW. Would be super handy to have one of those...

A tip from my underground lair: a large can (coffee, peanuts, Gatorade powder) is a handy thing for lug nuts to fall into when removing a wheel.
BONUS tech tip! When torquing lug nuts (or removing), pulling up involves all sorts of muscles from feet, legs, especially back. Or, you could just push down on it with your weight.

Glad to see the Chev rolling down the road. I've had five 71s and 72s. Service Bodies are great. The way you are using the pickup I would cut open the inside bed of the front doors, put in a firewall across the bed, and make it a clean space (carpet). Sort of a mini sleeper. A place for clothes and suitcases.
A 71 sway bar will fit on older rigs. A leather Cadillac Cimarron steering wheel bolts right on.
My preference was the coil spring set up. Lots of traction and I have scaled mine at 10,000lbs on coils with the factory overload. Also had a C10, with tool boxes and ladder rack, that I autocrossed. Scared the hell out of the course workers at the stop box.

If you want a smaller mig, the Hobart 140 with .024 wire on gas is a great choice for half the money of a Miller. They are made by the same parent company. It is a 120-volt machine that has enough power for most automotive repairs.
I have one, and I usually grab it before my big Miller unless I am welding something that absolutely requires the big machine.

  • @Brewdiss

I used to work out of a similar shop truck, only it was a Ford. We would have to remove extra scrap metal, because it would get way too heavy. The weight adds up quick! That little welder should run good on 6011 3/32" The 7018 would just make sparks for me anyway. Embrace zip ties on the fan shroud. Especially on the bottom.
