    Mastering is probably the most overlooked step in production, yet sometimes the most important. Mastering can be easy and repetitive once you have perfected the skill. Mastering should (in my opinion) always be done by someone other than the mixing engineer. A fresh pair of ears can hear the song in a different light and maybe catch some thing the mixer may have overlooked.In the following tutorial I'll show you how to master your songs and get a perfectly loud track that is acceptable to the human population before you send off the demo or post your mix to the internet. Let's face it. No one want to listen to something thats really quiet. We want it loud and in our faces! With that said, this tutorial is by no mean a way to get a super high quality master. This tutorial is meant for the time you need a quick master before uploading your music to the internet or sending a mixtape off to labels.
    Some key things to remember before the mastering stage:
    Make sure you gain staged your mix correctly, you should have a good amount of head room on your master output. The mix should be sitting between -6dB and -12dB at it’s loudest moments). Never peak higher than -3dB.
    If you were to take a mix that peaks around -6dB, you'd find the song is quiet in comparison to other finished music. To fix this, let's get to mastering!

    Dude, it worked really well. I slightly adjusted a couple elements to fit the song. (its a metal track) and it worked out perfectly without being too quiet or too loud and distorted.

    Thanks for the video. This works great for acoustic guitar tracks as well. Keeping the stereo out low and using the limiter to boost really brought back the life to the guitars. Quick, dirty, genius.

    Hello bro, I know you were trying to be humble by not praising your job, which is good but you know what?, your setting is actually the only setting that has given me the best output so far. No long story or feeling too big, you are real.
    Thanks a lot and keep doing the good work..
    I will share the link soon 🙏

    Most things on the internet / anything that converts into mp3 will cut off EVERYTHING above -1.5db. If you're limiting to -0.1db you're about to have some information clipped off. This happens for pretty much anything now that deals with streaming mp3s & even soundcloud. Just a quick note. I made this mistake when I was learning. (by no means am I a master but it's something I wish I would have known when I was younger.)

    Those of you saying you are getting distortion are likely pushing the gain on the limiter too much. What he has done here is indeed the basic steps you would take to master a track.

  • @AlekPlaysMinecraft

    It's better to shoot for -12-15 dB. You get a ton of headroom and you can use the adaptive limiter to it's fullest potential without getting any distortion. I found that it is also better sounding if you bounce in real time, although that is inefficient for longer works.

    • @HotBoyRob1105
      @HotBoyRob1105 8 лет назад

      It's better to shoot for 12-15 dB in what plugin or over all master output channel?

    • @unlockyoursound
      @unlockyoursound 7 лет назад +3

      If the gain isn't hitting the ceiling of the limiter, then no compression is happening and thus is no different to using a gain utility.

    I thought before you master it, you need to bounce and replace all tracks in to wave files ?

    • @imamusicmogul
      @imamusicmogul  7 лет назад +28

      not really. it does nothing to the track or quality if you do that. you only do that if you passing allow the session to another person to work on it. This way they have all your edits, sounds and effects in tact through the wav files.

    • @DaDrankKang
      @DaDrankKang 7 лет назад +1

      imamusicmogul look up the definition of wav and then of mp3 ... that statement is true in some aspects and false in many others.

    • @50CalBeats
      @50CalBeats 7 лет назад +1

      Da Drank Kang lol bruh I know this is late but you dont have to bounce to any format to master. You can master with the direct signal output from the vsts, samples, sounds etc if you want. Or you can master with wav stems. He didn't say anything about mp3s haha

    if my output is at -2dbs how do i bring it down to -6dbs? do i have to bring down all the individual tracks or can i just bring down the master track until the output is -6dbs? normally i just highlight all the tracks and bring them all down until they're at -6dbs but i have automation on some tracks so they will drag down but once i pause and play the song again they shoot back up to where i have them automated to. is there a simple fix for bringing down the automated tracks? id rather not retainer with them.
