Cannon Beach Elk Dodge the Dangerous Surf

  • The largest king tide since 1967 was happening January 10, 2021 at Cannon Beach Oregon. From my hotel deck, I watched this herd of elk observing the surf patterns. In between wave surges, the lead elk took off onto the beach and the rest of the herd followed. They made it further down the beach where they were momentarily pinned between the Ecola River and the tidal surge. They finally found a way back to high ground and all survived the event. Some may think the herd was spooked by people and that forced them to make the dangerous move onto the beach. They were not. I watched this herd for a 1/2 hour as they scouted and waited for the right moment to go on the beach. All of the people observing were doing so from a safe and respectful distance on their hotel decks. Only once the herd moved onto the beach, did we all come out to see where they were going.

These elk are pretty smart. What ever their reason for going onto the beach, they timed it just right. And they did so after 1/2 hour of observing and studying the surf patterns. The end of this video shows the dangerous surf that they just barely escaped.
King Tides can produce extremely dangerous hydraulic conditions. While the elk seemed to figure it out, the wave surge patterns are very unpredictable. People die every year in these events by not respecting the dynamic and forceful nature of tidal surges like these. But they are beautiful and majestic, so keep a safe distance and enjoy the show!

It looks like several were frolicking as they first went out onto the beach (a couple of bucks crow-hopping starting at 1:42). Obviously something they enjoy doing, though perhaps with the houses there they cut it a little close getting off the beach when the tide swept through. Humans are definitely not the only animals to experience joy. What a cool experience!

This Cannon Beach herd on the Oregon coast is an anomaly. Elk are normally a reclusive animal, preferring wild and rugged terrain where humans won’t bother them. They’re smart, tough animals to hunt. But I’m an old man, and this herd around Cannon Beach has been there for as long as I can remember. They have habitat they like that is close to the beach and they’ve learned to cohabitate with and tolerate the local human population. And for whatever reason, they love to get out and romp on the beach, often in the surf. Years ago I was there and went down early one morning for a walk on the beach. This herd came romping along in the surf, passed within yards of me and paid me no mind whatsoever. One of my favorite memories; I think of it often. For tourists that are lucky enough to see them, I’m sure it’s an experience they will never forget...

@@waterbug85 It was a magical moment, for sure. It was very early; I was the only one on the beach that I could see. I saw them coming from quite a ways off, so I just stood perfectly still and watched in awe as they thundered by me. They were in the surf, and I was close enough that they splashed water on me as they went by. There are some things in life you never forget, and for me that moment is near the top of the list.

@@George.Andrews. Heh, I also believe what you've pointed out to be correct, up to a point. I mean, a surfer on a surfboard, zooming down the front of a huge wave, (which is what I currently see in my suggestions) has a direct connection with the nature of that wave, and Shirley various instincts come into play. But like your sailing skills and knowledge of the weather and water, it brings you personally closer to nature than the same location would likely do for Miss Higglestone at the office.
