    To new/upcoming producers watching this, no you do not absolutely need all these to make music. Kontakt you will most likely want eventually if you don't stricly make electronic music, but all these plugins he says "you can not make modern music without these" .. Just flat out WRONG.
    So don't be discouraged, you don't have to buy 1000's of $ worth of plugins, or pirate stuff.
    Take your time, learn to synthesize maybe, and build up your collection over time.

      Good response. I think for beginners, Serum, is enough, and likely more than enough for a while. However, I only say that because the tutorials + presets are plentiful, otherwise Vital is an easy pick. There are many good free plug-ins especially for effects, and you should move past your stock plug-ins once you’ve grown past them.

    • @lifecat8
      @lifecat8 3 года назад

      This is probably the best advice. And there is a lot free stuff out there which is great. Some of my sounds sound the way they are because of post processing. And some are resynthesis with extraordinary features :)
      The best things come true if you just play around. Of course you should know at least the basics. Then the rest will eventually come to a point where you can play around and suddenly it sounds cool.

    • @elowine
      @elowine 3 года назад +2

      So true! Checkout Pianobook or Labs (Google it) for example for great free sampled instruments. Picking the right DAW can really help when you are starting out as a (hobby) producer. If you are into sound design for example Live's stock plugins are a great collection.If you want a bunch of synths to play with Reason might be the better option etc.

      Sorry in advance for the long post.
      This is the setup of an advanced user: even if Jon says he decided to keep just some of his plugins, I'd never expect them to be the bare minimum to make music (actually, I expected him to have more of them).
      Beginners should keep in mind that a setup like this is the result of years; everybody starts out with a cheaper and way more streamlined setup (and often they have less the minimum required) and then things are added/replaced over time, while growing up as musicians. Jon started with an home studio (and from time to time he shows the photo in his videos) and I'm sure he had less tools than now...
      The "you need xyz to make music" argument is something I don't agree (or I rather agree up to a certain point).
      When starting out, you don't need a lot of tools (actually, having a lot of tools is counterproductive), you need to learn the basics (learning the technology, learning how things work, developing you listening skills and so on) and really master them. Then, little by little, you may want to get some tools to get specific results or to work more quickly than with your daw standard tools. When a musician says "you need xyz", it's rarely a "need" like in "you need electric power for the fridge to work".
      Lets' say for example that you want to make a track with that cliché M1 house piano or organ: you may make music with something similar (because those are not the only piano/organ sounds you may use for house music, virtually every sampler/rompler has something in the ballpark) and get a great result and even have success, but you may also decide to buy the M1 plugin and use those exact sounds (so you "absolutely need the plugin" :P.)
      Anyway, in many interviews people tell they used whatever they had at their disposal, especially at the beginning of their career, so...
      To someone just starting out, I would strongly recommend to build their collection of tools over time with patience as they grow as musicians. Which is what almost everybody does, anyway.
      Also, nowadays daws include more and more content, so you don't need as much as many third party plugin as in the past. Those who started making music earlier probably already bought those third party plugins and will continue to use them because they are used to them and they know them inside out, but some of the included stuff nowadays is incredible and could probably replace some of them.
      Some plugins are a sort of "industry standard", a safe and reliable recipe to get some results. At a certain point of your journey, you may want to look into them and see if they are good for you too. You sort of "need them to make music" but you don't actually need all of them: gear choices are up to you and your own taste, which is something you develop with time. For example, some of Jon's choices of gear would leave me rather cold, even those which are "industry standard", while a lot of people make magic with them. It's a personal choice.
      Anyway, I think it's important to know what's the deal with those so called "industry standards", why they are widespread, what's their strength, why people appreciate them and so on (and you can do that by reading reviews, watching videos and so on... at least up to a certain degree), then you can replicate some of the concepts/ideas with different tools (maybe freeware plugins or the content included with your daw). For example, years ago I read about recursive envelope modulation (using the envelope to modulate the parameters of the same envelope) in a Virus manual: I never had a Virus (which is arguably an "industry standard" synth), but I applied the idea to other synths (I remember trying that with Thor in Reason 4).
      Also, when watching the studio of a professional musician (but also an hobbyist studio - because some setups are actually impressive) I think we shouldn't watch it with the idea of making a shopping list (that's a big temptation, especially for beginners, and it's also a very big mistake!), but rather to understand how a certain piece of equipment (hardware or software) contributes to the final result or improves the workflow. It's also a way to get a different perspective on your own setup and maybe improve it.
      For example, speaking of Jon's setup I expected to see Diva (and it was there, of course!), while Synplant or XO or the lack of certain brands like PA and Sonnox were surprises for me.
      Anyway, in my opinion the biggest giveaway of this video is about choosing your tools and avoiding duplicates (ie: those short moment when he speaks about delays or comparing different limiters) in order to avoid getting stuck because of too many options while making music. You need to keep the focus on what you're doing (ie: making music).
      It's not even a question of spending a lot of money on a setup, because you may quickly end in this situation by taking advantage of various promotions (I know first hand, because I bought some plugins for stupidly cheap while there was a discounted sale - or if they were on the cover disc of magazines - but then they ended up unused most of the time) or downloading freeware (I've been there too, before starting buying things... those who have been around for a longer time may remember the freeware plugins from 2000-2010, before the shift from 32bit to 64 bit, and the tons of SynthEdit powered freeware).
      Instead of deleting the unused plugin, I keep a main list in Cubase for each category (let's say delay, dynamics, eq, modulation, reverb, etc) and a subfolder with all the paid plugins that I never ever use (but I keep them for those moments when I'm stuck and I want to try something different). This way I try to avoid getting blinded by too many choices. If I was on Logic instead of Cubase, I would just disable/delete most of them (as far as I know, there's no way to sort the plugins in a custom way within Logic) in order to reduce the clutter.
      Anyway, my problem is writing good songs, which no amount of gear can fix! :P I should spend less time looking at new tools and more time making music (I was more productive when I started out about 20 years ago...)

    Danke für den Input übrigens. Hab soeben auch alles gelöscht. Man arbeitet kreativer und auch produktiver und schneller wenn man wenige Sachen sehr gut beherrscht und alles aus ihnen rausholen kann, als wenn man sich andauernd in ein neues Instrument einarbeitet.
    Ich mach selber schon seit 13 Jahren Musik und bin immer auf das nächste Level gekommen, wenn ich mich auf neues und WENIGES konzentriert habe.
    Abgesehen davon ist Field Recording mit das unterschätzteste Gebiet überhaupt. Kein Plugin bekommt Percussions hin wie ein paar verrostete Müllcontainer, die man mit einem Plastikdildo verprügelt.

    i use 2 synth plugins and about 5 effect plugins and they are all i really need. You definetly dont "need" all these expensive plugins. If you really take the time the stock plugins are often times already enough to make very good music

    • @iamdannywyatt
      @iamdannywyatt 3 года назад

      Well said. Look at this simple example: he opened up SynthPlant and said “I don’t know how it works, I guess you plant things”. This just proves that people buy plugins for their presets and how quickly they get results. So in the end, pretty much any stock plugin can achieve what you want as long as you put in the time. Once you add distortion, phaser, tremolo, another distortion, auto filter to a sine wave, you already don’t have a sine wave. Just gotta be creative and know your tools

    Well, this is a looooot more than just the essentials, if you just have serum and the plugins of your daw (especially those of ableton), you really are good to go (for most electronic music at least, maybe kontakt for your "real instrument" needs and an ozone for mastering maybe if you are really fancy). This collection is just plain abundance.

    Let me make a few points, and i mean it in positive/no hate mode:
    1. Unchecking plugins in Logic Pro plugin manager doesn't mean the same as deleting a plugin from a laptop/pc, which is exactly what you did (one user posted a question on how did you delete them in the comments bellow, and that was your answer - unchecking them in Logic plugin manager), so the video title is a clickbait.
    2. Omnisphere is indeed one of the top VSTi' plugins (Trilian also), but to claim that is impossible to make "modern music" (whatever that means) without it is a giant overstatement.
    3. In some comments i see a Waves diss. I agree that their update plan is pure moneygrab, also they have stupid licensing scheme where you can use their plugins in only one PC/laptop (you can put the licences on a usb stick and move them one pc to another, but it is really not ideal solution). BUT, you can use them for years without upgrading to the latest version.
    4. Many hit records are made without these "must have" plugins, even the entire albums (a big part of Justice debut album "Cross" was produced in Garage Band), Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics was done on a 8 track recorder, and so on.The main point is that (quote from one producer) - "musical talent rules above quality/quantity of gear any day of the week. No ifs. No buts. "
    All that said, i like some of your videos where you are grounded and real, but this one is one of those that almost makes me to unsubscribe from your channel (i know, i know, i won't be missed if i do that).
    Cheers

    Fabfilter or DMG + stock reaper are the fx you will ever need for 90% of the time. Synths are inspiration. You can have many and still won't get distracted.

    Please stop saying that you can't make music without certain plug-ins. Like you know better, why are you trash talking. I'm not hating but saying that you can't make modern music without Kontakt is just weird to hear from someone so experienced as you.

    Less is more but what about when you want to go to an old project and it has those plugins in them. They wouldnt open.
    Edit: If you reorganise them instead of deleting them you can have a whole section of ones you use and pit the ones you dont in another section. I dont know if you can do that in logic but in ableton and FL you can have a favourites section and in FL you can actually reorganise the entire directory into folders in the DAW directory.

    I have an iLok. Transfer them over to me. Actually I have UAD Ultimate 9 practically plus lots of other UAD plugs and Waves Mercury. But I have not updated my Waves Update plan in a while. I have Apollo X conversion so it makes sense to stick with UAD software. People differ on if the whole DSP locked in thing is worth it. But I would hope everyone can agree that UAD plug ins sound at minimal as good or if not better than comparable. Do not complain about the UAD prices either because when on sale they are often cheaper than native plug ins which seldom go on sale. I am not even close to being a UA fanboy either. I understand that people buy sample packs but there is no reason with todays soft synths a person can can not be creative and develop their own sound. I have my analog synth and drum collection but it is expensive and not within everyone's budget.
