The key word is "senseless" i think to Heavy, all the violence he commits is for a reason, be it for his employers, to provide for his family etc. Seeing a once innocent child groomed for combat kill a small defenseless animal however? Well that truly is violence he can't make sense out of.
Heavy seems like a bit of a interesting character, seriously. He mourns a little bird but kills hundreds of men for a living. Dude obviously see's innocents in animals, and darkness in humans. Not a Nuance afforded to many "big gun men" in most video games.
I mean, in his point of view, his own country men killed his father and put his whole family in a Gulag. While British/Americans are paying Heavy to kill people for their own gain. He has seen both sides of the iron curtain and there is nothing but violence. Humanity is nothing but violence with some logic behind it. So obviously 'senseless violence' for Heavy would be the death of an innocent animal.

This was back during the days of the Soviet Union, The Heavy couldn't use emotions or else he would have to do hard labor in a prison camp. Those were the days for him.
The death heavy causes isn’t senseless, they’re trying to kill him, he’s paid to kill them. But this is a true show of “senseless” violence. To heavy, it makes no sense why the boy would kill the defenseless sparrow. Strongbad asked for senseless violence in a cartoon sense, heavy gave it to him in a real sense.
D-ray Ent see Heavy is a mercenary and he feels nothing for the loss of human life but fauna's lives hurt more for Heavy he's literally payed to kill people not animals
There's also the fact that he saw somebody _else_ do it. I mean, sure, shooting someone comes naturally to the heavy. But if you saw one of your friends get shot by somebody else, it makes it an action that was not caused by you. You feel powerless over the situation. You feel very small and regretful, that something so innocent, so pure, would be struck down by something you couldn't knowingly prevent. That bird was doing nothing but singing its songs to the heavy, who most likely had no happiness in his assassin camp when growing up. To have that little bit of happiness suddenly be stripped away, by an action he himself was forced to learn to do, is so very saddening.
and it could probably also be because the sparrow wasnt expected to be killed mercenaries will obviously expect it and can (or at least think they can) fight
Even medic would have been crying to hear someone kill a bird like that. Maybe that is how they first bonded Also, I like how Heavy's literary skills sublty show here in the ways he tells the story and beutifully paints the scene, like how he put emphasis on the snow setting.

this story represents the death of the Heavy's childlike innocence. He knew then that anything that was too good and pure was not long for his world. So if he is to survive, he must be a crueler killing machine than his enemies. He must make everyone too afraid to cross him. Only then can he fit in fleeting moments of vulnerability
When I was boy, I was at camp being trained in many ways of combat.
