That shot of Michael Johnson coming down the homestretch with the flashbulbs going off in the background is my first Olympic memory, and when I fell in love with Track & Field.
@@TheSaxon. i dont think so tbh. usian bolts long steps are unbeatable. and he wasnt even pushed to his maximum. in his 100m 9.58 world record he didnt push trough the last 2 steps. imagine michael johnson next to usian bolt in the 200 meter :D. that would be so amazing but i would have my money on bolt. michael johnsons run style looks more like it is pushed to the max the way he runs. its so powerful and fast. usian bolt looked like he was jogging when he was winning
This was the first Olympics I ever watched. I was 8 years old. When I see this man come out with his gold shoes (what kid wouldn't think gold shoes were awesome?), his running posture, and his multiple records he was breaking, how could I not cheer him on and be glued to the tv for his races?
I was there at the 1996 olympics to see this. I was also there a month before at the Olympic trials in Atlanta where I lived. I trained for the '84 decathlon myself, so I knew track and when I went into the Stadium for the trials virtually no one was there, somethning like 100 -150 people in the entire stadium. So I sat on the second row right by the finish line. And that day they were picking the team for the 200. Michael came blazing down the straight away and was 8 to 10 yards ahead of everyone else, and as he did I realized I was witnessing a world record right in front of me, so I stood up and yelled 'he's going to break the world record'. I had never seen someone run that fast and I trained with the best athletes in the world out in California in '84. Michael did break the world record running 19.47 that day, but it came back that it was 'wind aided' so it did not count. But I got a chance to see someone run as fast as I had ever seen. He obviously did beat even that time at the '96 olympics which should go down as one of the greatest olympic performaces ever. Congratulations to him, and what a pleasure to see him up close.
Wish I'd been alive to see that! I can't really imagine what it'd have been like to experience that 'nearly' world record! The best 200m race that I've seen in person was the 2023 London Diamond League 200m where Lyles ran 19.47 (SB at the end of the season), Tebogo ran 19.50 (AR at that time) and Hughes ran 19.73 (NR!!! - I'm British lol). I've got a video of the race from the stands on my channel if you want to check it out. I've also got the Women's 100m from the same event as well!
This was an iconic moment at the 1996 Olympics! Michael Johnson breaking his own 200m world record in the 200m Olympic finals in those famous gold shoes!!! Epic!! Salute to the immortal Michael Johnson! Without a doubt, one of the very best track athletes of all time!! Arguably the greatest that the United States has ever produced.
Man that side shot of Michael running down the track as you see camera flashes in the stands is iconic! I wasn't surprised when it made the montage at the end of the games. And his reaction is just epic as well.
Absolutely Incredible. What makes this great for me is at 15 seconds the camera angle which follows the athletes at their level takes this race to another level. You can see these guys give everything. It’s thunder. Inspiring.
HrobrineTheLegend Trying out for collegiate next year but for my personal bests Senior year of track (first and last year in High School Track) were 11.50s (legal wind) 23.52s (legal wind) and Long Jump (20' 3.5").

@@seanwebb4291he’d have broken 19 seconds for sure. He stumbled at the start, and had to pick back up again, so was nowhere near his best race. Along with the straitened quad at the end, he’d have definitely broken 19 seconds here. A moment from the mid 1990s which is immortalised in history.
I guess maybe. He might've hit the wall though. I'm sure the best in the world knows how to pace his energy to have just enough to get over the finish.
He and those gold shoes, I remember watching this back in the day, I honestly never thought I would see anyone more electric, dominant than he, but here comes Usain ⚡ lol
Wait.....So dude stumbled out the blocks. Came upright and ran upright throughout the entire race. Shut it down with 10m to go and still broke the WR. Thats just insane!!😮
Although Bolt has the current 200m WR but experts in Athletics fraternity agree that the best world record for 200m is the one which was set by Michael Johnson in 1996 - because of the margin. It was such a hi-action moment, that it gives goosebumps to watch that moment even today although it happened in 1996 - particularly the last 50 meters as he chuggs like a locomotive to the finish line. His body is not made of bones, there are certainly some motor parts inside.
So unreal. At the time, a 19.32 was something u could only imagine being reached 30+ yrs down the line (literally). It was the equivalent of Bob Beamon’s LJ.. If u knew the sport, a 19.32 was a hard thing to wrap ur mind around.
Do you know how fast you have to be in order put distance between you and the second place guy on the straight away? Michael Johnson was truly dominant.
This video sums up America - sporting excellence, training discipline, dietary excellence, then, for all the children watching, a Hershey's advert to try to subliminally connect them.

This is not the WR anymore but to me, it's STILL to best 200m I've ever seen! Perfect display of speed and power!
He'd be the best, if he was around today. Improved science, training and nutrition.
If I could have his EXACT shoes he wore for the 96 races...I could name my F'n price!
